Great Video. The Montana peak, was the third style in the Spanish American replacing Stetson style. During 1889 to 1910, there eight different style of hat, depending on what unit. You were from. My research currently deal with the denim , wool, and undershirts that the N G units wore during that period. Can you do a video on light during that time period, I keep tell people it was 20 years before the flashlight was invented. Candle ration was still in effect until 1905.
Diebulfrog79 is it possible to take any drill instructor surplus montana peak hat and make the dents small enough to be worn low? I love old montana peak hats but having it so high on my head would be impractical
I just purchased a 10x felt hat from River Junction Trade named after Ike Clanton from Tombstone. It has floppy upturned brim and was pretty expensive but decently priced for a 10x beaver felt. I'll be using it for hiking and camping trips. I love the style of hats from the Old West and this one River Junction sells is accurate to that timeframe which is why I decided to purchase it from them. Funnily enough after I buy that hat your video pops up in my recommended.

I was surprised to know that the army issued campaign hats with the "Montana Peak" prior to the 1911 model--I saw Sam Elliott wearing one with the earlier hat in "Rough Riders" and thought it was an anachronism, even though they dredged up a bunch of Krag-Jorgensens
I actually was not aware that they were either. I had always assumed that the had was just issued with a round crown and it was up to the soldier to shape it as they saw fit. If you look at enough photos from the Spanish American War and the Philippines you will notice a huge assortment of crown styles among soldiers.
Good day sir. Your campaign hat is in the pecan color correct? I went on their website and found the hat. I like the Christian Bale shape 1883 campaign hat from the film Hostiles (which they offer). My question is would that shape be appropriate for this uniform and the other color they offer is black or should I stay with the pecan color like yours.
rsaathoff C&CSutlery makes a hat they call the rough rider slouch which is basically the 1883 campaign hat and it is a fairly affordable price and it is a very quality product.
no no the campaign hat was apinched crown right up to 1904 yor hat is not a 1889, the 1889 hada snowflak vent and had a 6 incn crown and 3 rows of brim stitch
Yes this is the 1889 Campaign Hat. It has three rows of stitching, not all vents were issued the same, if you take the time to look at more than one photograph of the Americans in Cuba and the Philippines, you will notice several variations in the vents.
yr hat is the montana crown which wasnt issued until 1911, all issued hats previous to that were std pinched crown with either a snowflake vent or a starvent and 1899 hat was fitting with a 1" brass vent,and the 1902 hat and the 1904 had the starvent, check them out online

During world war 1 and the Pancho villa expedition that hat was common place.

I'm scared to look. Mine survived several months in the desert but it took a beating and I dont want to replace it.

Stay with the Pecan, and from what I have seen they kept the montana peak style.
