Not a weak verse in the whole song! Start it off with Krs one and end it with Chuck D, genius! Still hits just as hard as when it was first released....
Roy Williamson Yessssssssss! The song itself is great. But, this particular verse is, too me, the greatest verse in the song. I remember when this song came out and I first heard that verse. It changed my life! " ...back in the 60s are brothers and sisters were hanged how could you gang bang. I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan and I shouldn't have to run from a black man."
"Heavy's at the door so there'll be no bumrushing" Everyone did their thing on this epic track. I remember when the video came on The Box, Rap City and Yo! MTV Raps....
I just remember everybody being a little pissed because L.L.'s verse was cut from the video. I was 10 when this dropped so I didn't understand that him and Kool Moe Dee had beef behind the scenes 😂!
Latasha Dunlap This generation is a lot safer and better than that generation in terms of crime. Let’s not pretend like crime wasn’t out of control in the 80’s and 90’s.
I know of Heavy, but Ms. Melody Passed??? I know that she was married to Kris whom hosts this video! As for the passing of the torch... Something was definitely lossed along the way in translation from that time to now! I'm an old head, so......
Exactly the evil ones of this society understood the importance of black unity and created a new narrative to destroy the black community. We need to wake up as Teddy Pendergrass said.
Chuck D is my all time fav rapper, because of this song and Public Enemy music and. KRS1, they brought out gangsta rap bec Chuck and KRS was waking too many black folks up and I’m one of them!
My step dad gave me a speech at age 12 to listen to this song and he mentioned that if I hang out with the wrong company I could end up in one of two places : The graveyard or jail. Glad I listened
TRUE STORY. I was 12 when this came out. I'm from southwest Philly (hood) but by 12 we moved to Wnyyefield which is a suburb of west Philly & where Will Smith is from....its NOT good @ all, no matter what the shows intro song says...anyway, 2 other rappers were from there , Steady B & Cool C. They killed a cop & are doing life now...anyway, 1 day I'm on my friend Corey's porch next to where Steady B lived , & SB & another producer were on their porch talking about this song & video that's coming & he wanted SB on it but they were only using NYC rappers. The producer was like "its bullshit anyway, its just a chance for the IT rappers to all put their face out there more. Some of the artist don't even give a fuck about the message".....now I'm 12 , ear hustling & hearing this! @ that moment I promised to go w my OWN heart & NOT what another person says that they stand for.....bcuz they might be full of shit.
We have self destructed. And now we are watching it fall in slow motion with whats going on now. I almost cried rewatching this message decades later. 😢

When rap/hip hop had real meaning. If only our community would have listened to this message and taken heed, now our communities 30+ years later are a mess. 🙏🏾
Cause this was out before Liberal Whites completely taken over the Hip Hop Industry, now they control the majority of the media industry and the social engineering continues with the Black Community as it's usual main target🎯
So the music was like this because they had strong leaders, the new generation is the way it is because the people they should be looking to were wiped away by modern media and once social media came into the picture there was so much noise that its easy to get swayed into doing whatever for money. Especially in the west where the fast life and clout is king apparently.
We are almost fully done. We are burning our own country down. Guess who will pay for it? Look at the kids. They’ll pay. They’ll pay for EVERYTHING. Ask the rioters, looters, and murderers if they care. They don’t. They really don’t. They think that they’re heroes.
Now the kids have cardi b and Meg the stallion to help brainwash their unguided minds. The system plant seeds in the babies brains so most think this is lame. Really not knowing the path of self destruction.
I'm a 48 year old white guy who was 16 at the time this came out. I knew every rapper on this track and every line in their part. I had a real strong connection and affinity for this song because it was the language of the heart. Not only a great musical creation with the East Coast All Stars, but deep and meaningful. I knew it wasn't meant for me, but I always spit every line along with each artist. This track had weight, it was important at that time. It's important at this time. This country could go a long way to re-examine this project. The West Coast came out with "We're all in the same Gang" soon after, taking the example the East Coast had set. It was pretty good, but this one was my personal favorite. I still love it. It's about personal responsibility.
It was about the crack and the gun violence that was going on in N.Y.C . It got so bad that kids couldn't play in the play ground or in the projects that they lived in. They were selling crack right in front of the kids. Back then they passed a law if you sell drugs in a school yard or park your doing life. That law still apply till this day in N.Y.C.
@@frankrodriguez7045 I remember this. We had nothing but fun playing in the projects. Going to corner store...then one day we couldn't go outside. SMH.

The best thing about this video is how all the rappers came together to join forces and make a dope and powerful song with a message to the people it served.
White man got control of RAP and Hip-Hop and turned it against the people. This is why the message went from positive and educational to negative. Money, Drugs, Killing is the new message they want to push to the masses.

Not a weak verse in the whole song! Start it off with Krs one and end it with Chuck D, genius!
Still hits just as hard as when it was first released....
Kool Moe Dee's best verse is in this song
Roy Williamson I totally agree, but I'd probably agree no matter who you shouted out.
Very solid top to bottom.
Roy Williamson
Yessssssssss! The song itself is great. But, this particular verse is, too me, the greatest verse in the song. I remember when this song came out and I first heard that verse. It changed my life!
" ...back in the 60s are brothers and sisters were hanged how could you gang bang. I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan and I shouldn't have to run from a black man."
mscardioqueen
Yes that was and is a great verse!
Agreed 💯👍
"Heavy's at the door so there'll be no bumrushing" Everyone did their thing on this epic track. I remember when the video came on The Box, Rap City and Yo! MTV Raps....
Big ups Ed Lover and Dr. Dre. ✌️🎧🎚️🎶
R.i.p Heavy
I just remember everybody being a little pissed because L.L.'s verse was cut from the video. I was 10 when this dropped so I didn't understand that him and Kool Moe Dee had beef behind the scenes 😂!

What difference would it make? If it didn't work 30 years ago, why is it gonna work now?
Start with single moms trying raise men, that’s about 85% of the problem!
Exactly the evil ones of this society understood the importance of black unity and created a new narrative to destroy the black community. We need to wake up as Teddy Pendergrass said.
Aye I wish the music did have these messages again

Chuck D is my all time fav rapper, because of this song and Public Enemy music and. KRS1, they brought out gangsta rap bec Chuck and KRS was waking too many black folks up and I’m one of them!
Ms. Rawkii Joy - Those were the main two. Loved the messages.

@Plan D yep, that was the west coasts answer to self destruction.
2024 still listening..... as many of these rappers should come together and do an update on this!!!
We are still “SELF DESTRUCTING” in 2021! Have we learned anything from this great rap single?
We have self destructed. And now we are watching it fall in slow motion with whats going on now. I almost cried rewatching this message decades later. 😢

I'm so heartbroken to say that we can't.
Absolutely correct
Who listening to it in 2020
I am so much realness in this song. This is like the hip hop version of we are the world to me.

❤️❤️❤️❤️

How did rapping about knowledge become corny in the future?
White man got control of RAP and Hip-Hop and turned it against the people. This is why the message went from positive and educational to negative. Money, Drugs, Killing is the new message they want to push to the masses.
