Just cuz a player may deserve an extension doesn’t mean a team is obligated to give that player a new deal. This is a business and the teams are allowed to sign whoever they want. Not getting the extension you want doesn’t give Jimmy the right to actively not try in games and try to bring the team down with him. There’s tons of other players on expiring deals and none of them are making it about them like Jimmy is.
Not to mention he’s 35 and been injured. You don’t pay guys just based on past accomplishments. Heat are smart for not wanting to pay him. No team should want to.

@coachcarlosjohnson also, typically those contracts have verbiage that stipulate extensions, bonuses etc etc. If Jimmy has met those criteria, and I'm certain he's over-achieved, then respect that and negotiate with that good faith. One of the years he really took a bunch if g-league and walk-on players to the finals, and his stats this season aren't terrible, but the style of play seems to focus and get the team ready to move on without him. Agreed. Riley is playing nfl gm games in an nba front office. Unfortunately, individual nba players have more impact than non qb nfl players and the nba has max contracts combined with basically a hard cap and no franchise tag so you can’t just outbid the competition. Riley would rather have no shot at winning a championship wit gritty role players with heart rather than be held hostage by championship talent. The nba only has 25 guys that really impact winning so trying to treat players like assets is a mistake. Trying to squeeze the juice out of players by saying “play out the contract you signed”only to let them walk like a running back or safety with nagging injuries will only make other players resent the heat.
Pat Riley deserves just as much blame for this situation as Jimmy. Of course Jimmy is going to try to get more money on the last year of his deal. Pat doesn't want to pay him or trade him. He thinks the trade offers are too low for a "superstar," but he is telling the whole league Jimmy isn't a superstar by not extending him. Which is it? Just cuz a player may deserve an extension doesn’t mean a team is obligated to give that player a new deal. This is a business and the teams are allowed to sign whoever they want. Not getting the extension you want doesn’t give Jimmy the right to actively not try in games and try to bring the team down with him. There’s tons of other players on expiring deals and none of them are making it about them like Jimmy is.
Not to mention he’s 35 and been injured. You don’t pay guys just based on past accomplishments. Heat are smart for not wanting to pay him. No team should want to.

This is why listening to the local reporters is key. They got him Lowry, which was the highest sought after free agent the year he came to Miami, and gave Lowry an extra year to win the bidding war. Then, in the press conference, he basically threw Spo, the one person who has defended him throughout everything, under the bus along with his teammates. There have been worse things said about teams in press conference's without a suspension. Jimmy was pretty reserved about what he said. The suspension was too much IMO. They could have just said: "Hey, if you're that unhappy, we can just have you sit out and look for a trade."

One of the years he really took a bunch if g-league and walk-on players to the finals, and his stats this season aren't terrible, but the style of play seems to focus and get the team ready to move on without him. I'm certain he sees it snd feel it and is acting accordingly. Miami is going a slick route while Jimmy is addressing head on. I respect it.

Unfortunately, individual nba players have more impact than non qb nfl players and the nba has max contracts combined with basically a hard cap and no franchise tag so you can’t just outbid the competition. Riley would rather have no shot at winning a championship wit gritty role players with heart rather than be held hostage by championship talent. The nba only has 25 guys that really impact winning so trying to treat players like assets is a mistake. Trying to squeeze the juice out of players by saying “play out the contract you signed”only to let them walk like a running back or safety with nagging injuries will only make other players resent the heat.
