Restoring a Large Meat Cleaver

  • In this video I restore a massive Beatty Hog Splitter. It is essentially a giant cleaver that was used back when butchers did not have electric saws and all of that fancy stuff. These were used to split animal carcasses down the spine into two halves. I really enjoyed restoring/ modifying this beast because you don't see this kind of stuff very often especially on the west coast. I used gel wipe on Evaporust in order to soften up the surface rust and then used a coarse wire wheel to easily take off the softened rust.

Love the look and the handle and the grunge lookof the cleaver is beautiful 🤩! If you can spend an Hour sharping it, it will be a much sharper and better chopper blade.

My great Grand Father had one of these in the workshop I was forbidden to enter as a young child. I only know because an elder cousin once used it in a hockey mask to scare the life out of me around age 7~8. Never saw it again, never knew it was a "real thing" until just now. I just remember getting a good look at it when it was all over and it being in slightly better shape than yours when you started; of course this was 30+ years ago.

Sorry, but your blade work doesn't cut it - no pun intended. No fine sanding to remove the grime and restore the shine. I understand your reluctance to erase the original maker's stamp, but this is a blade that need a lot more work, considering it takes almost a complete pass of your "sharpened edge" to cut a freakin' banana.
