The plane was going over water when the engine 🔥, if I'm not mistaken. I believe that if he would've kept it on and jumped into the water before the plane 💥, he could've survived. He probably would've broken some things, but he would've lived. When he found out who he was, he shifted his focus from surviving to thinking about what his new life would be like and that is where he messed up. He even took off his life jacket, like he was safe, but the plane hadn't landed.
This show is really good in foreshadowing the future events. For example when yi jae mistook jisu got in accident, its actually how she gonna died or she the one supposed to died there if she never meet yijae model new body.
