You ladies are so right. It has gotten better though. Companies are providing therapies for the trainees and idols, and now we are seeing some idols that aren't heavily dieting as before. But there needs to be so much more to be done for these young girls and boys. There needs to be more of a support system, we expect these idols to be perfect but we need them to be looked out for. Young girls and boys debuting at 14/15 need to be protected in this industry.

i agree with you to a extent but what you have to remember is the weight is NOT a kpop industry issue. it is a korean society and asian culture issue in general. this is what rubs me wrong whenever western people discuss kpop and the dark sides because this isnt something that only exists in kpop this happens in every industry including the artists in your own backyard, plus models, athlets, ballet dancers, Olympic participants the list goes on.
my issue isnt that people call it out my issue is the fact that people gawk and gasp some even calling kpop fans supporters of modern day slavery without trying to even help change the system. like if someone learns korean and goes to korea and advocates to make things better and that person happens to have the same views as this is wrong etc that would be different but most people who speak ill about kpop do nothing but type or speak into the void and it does absolutely nothing but add to the stigma and push western audiences away from ever checking out any of these groups which in turn lets the groups fail and waste all their hard work. labeling it as a kpop problem or dark side of kpop isnt addressing the issue at all and isnt helping the idols that truly need it. its to the point that no matter how much proof armys show that bts arent puppets bts have creative freedom bts make MJAORITY of their own decisions including how many lines they get in songs, the clothes they wear on red carpet, interviews, music video shoots, photoshoots, concepts, they have control over shooting different takes if they dont like the way it turned out, they add their own choreography, they produce, direct music videos, help with album designs etc even though they dont do this for every single thing they did all of it at least once which someone with no creative control and no freedom wouldnt be able to do at all. no matter how much proof we show people do believe the dark side of kpop they never believe it because people keep pushing this narrative.
yes the industry has problems but it shouldnt be the focal point of its existence and by explaining it the way you are to them adds to that narrative.
like for example all of the women speaking to each other around the table when they were talking about weight quota 1 was saying she had one and the others were rightfully shocked BUT that meant that was NOT their experiences meaning every label is different and shouldnt be talked about as a collective. its not a kpop issue its a whatever label that idol was at's issue. while also being a korean society issue.
i hope you get where im coming from im not angry at you i just want you to see what it looks like if a non fan were to just watch your video randomly kpop fans/korean music fans should learn about the truth and nuances about the industry first before ever diving deeper into groups to the point it takes years to ever know the proper information cause it just pushes stereotypes, ignorance and misinformation until they finally get the right information and by that point may not even listen or accept the information cause theyre so set on believing the propaganda done by western media.
please react to bbygangmags videos on bts and kpop especially kpop vs orientalism. even calling it manufactured is problematic in itself because of the ways it ties into how words like that affect asians in general.

Please tell me you will be continuing this series and not just when you spin it? It's such an important series and each episode just gets better and better. The bonus content and deleted scenes are equally good and equally important to the story. Thanks for reacting.

10:30 your conversation reminded me of something I saw Bang PD saying in an interview once. He spoke about the K-pop industry finding these super talented, eager, hard working kids and training them to the point where they can dance, sing and act so well only to then, so often, stifle their own creativity, which is such a waste. He wanted to find super talented kids and push and support that creativity to see where it could go. He was clearly on to something there.

I believe some trainees who've been cut do get picked up by other companies to get a "second" or third chance. It happens but most probably have to choose another pathway. Thankfully they get rejected when young so they still have a whole life to work on something else. Isn't there a saying in the classical music field or in the dance world if you don't become great you become instructors or professors?

I’m so happy you watched this! Yes, the editor is super impressive and deserves all the applause honestly. She started working on this around 4 or 5 years ago, and you can really tell the time invested by the high quality. (It’s hard to say my favourite episodes because there are no bad ones imo - but I love episodes 3, 9, 12, 18 and 21 most I think).
I love your discussions, too. I think one thing Aneesa was aiming for with ep 1 was to compare the “normal” standards of k-pop at the time and then show how BTS differs from that and what Bang PD did differently. I have mixed feelings on the trainee system… I don’t think it’s any “worse” than the professional ballet/gymnastics etc training here but just because the west does the same things doesn’t make it “right” either. Especially the forced weight control is hard to agree with, like you said. I know idols are basically full time professional athletes and models at the same time, and need to control their weight, but I do worry a little, especially if they’re underage. There are some fascinating video essays by bby gang mag on the kpop industry, with a really fair, balanced educated viewpoint (imo) which I can recommend too, maybe on your next education spin?
