      As always a pleasure to see more of your artwork. Once my current set of projects is done, I plan on trying to come up with some games using your art. It's such a charming world you've created :)

    ***** is not only an incredible artist, but he does it using 100% free software! This timelapse (and the rest of his Pepper & Carrot series) is an inspiration to all aspiring artists. The message is that you don't need to be a professional to make art that you're proud of, you don't even need boat loads of cash, or a fancy computer. (you might want a decent drawing tablet though)
    I'm about ready to jump into Krita/Blender and make that anime series I've been talking about for so long. Once I graduate of course... 😉

    • @Bangy

      Trust me, you need a fancy computer to run Krita

    • @ThatPash
      @ThatPash 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bangy My computer isn't fancy at all, its a 2013 laptop and krita runs on it pretty well! But the fact that i have linux on it helps a lot, so if your computer is older, get linux! It's free and there are distraputions that look like windows or MacOs.

    I hope I'm not too late to start learning about digital art now (I'm in my mid 20s). I really admire your persistence, patience, and attention to reaally small details. Love your work!

    I wish I'd stop watching videos like these. It makes my art look like a toddler drew it, and the idea of ever reaching these levels impossible! I loved watching it come to life though, but I still need to get my head around Krita and all the effects and techniques you used. I was squinting at the screen trying to figure it all out!
    Amazing talent! I'm your new fan.

    +David Revoy Another great piece of art! How did you invert your image at 3:01 so your background color does not affect your line art image? You should make a tutorial on invert and select and filling inside the lines. I think many people would also want to learn from you as well!

    I'm curious why the artist keeps flipping the image while working. It's a freaking good illustration job!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Jamiel Almeida Thank you ; flipping the canvas ( 'M' key in Krita ) helps to trick the brain ; Our brain overlay deformation on the drawing, especially after hours of work on a drawing. ( you probably saw the 'portraits' of beginner drawers, with face deformed ) It's a autocorrect process making things looking good for only the creator. By flipping the canvas, the artist can trick the brain ; it doesn't recognize the artwork and can't apply the auto-correct deformations. It's a little window of time to see the artwork ' with fresh eyes'. It also work in real-life with a mirror.

    • @JamielAlmeida
      @JamielAlmeida 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** oh, that makes sense, thanks for the trick, I'll try to practice it. Really cool timelapse and final product!

    David, I see you are a LinuxMint user. What program you use for desktop recording? Do you mind sharing your Pc's hardware config (RAM, etc) I use Kubuntu and trying to record some works but i feel i need some extra Ram memory and new video card. Any tips about this? I use an Acer notebook. Thanks!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Liz de Souza Hi, Sorry for replying your message with late. I use a Intel CPU around 2.6GHzx8 Corei7 + 8GB ram. My screenrecord soft is simplescreenrecorder ; on Mint it's in a PPA. When I record long painting , I only capture 10 or 15 frame per second ; sometime even lower. As I accelerate later ; I don't need many FPS. So, it's lightweight for the CPU to do this.

    • @LizdeSouza
      @LizdeSouza 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** thanks a lot! I'm planning to make some products for artists also and you are one of the artists that inspire me, in this Linux world. Here in Brazil there are some people asking me for online classes or videos of what I do. The information you gave will help so much. Merci!

    How are you able to reposition different parts of the drawing towards the beginning such as the leg, it seems to surrounded by a box and surround or enlarged how does that work and how do I do it to, in Krita?

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Last Tomb Hey, it's in fact a series of actions I do , but because the video is accelerated it feels like a single action :
      1. I select an area with the 'Outline selection tool' ( I setup a custom shortcut for it , but you'll find it on the toolbox)
      2. I press Ctrl+T to edit this selection/area with the 'transform tool' ; the widget appear around.
      3. I tweak the widget rotate/scale/shear/move ; a lot is possible to do, then I press 'Enter' to bake the result
      4. I press 'B' to go back to brush.
      I do it very fast as a combo now , very useful because I'm not really strict with my drwing proportions, I often draw by instinct, then fix after.

  • @kaii456
    @kaii456 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lovely! Just one question: How did you select what you just drew (i.e: at the thumbnailing part you would draw something then and then automatically be able to resize it/ move it) although everything was on 1-3 layers? Thank you!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! thanks for the feedback :)
      For moving something quickly ; I use a combination of shortcut on keyboard.
      1. I added a custom shortcut for the 'selection by outline' tool. I use the key ' ² ' easy to reach on my Azerty-french keyboard. When I hit the key, I can draw around the character or thumbnail to define the area of selection. In the toolbox, the icon look like a little lasso or a dashed potatoe-like shape.
      2. When the selection is active ( marching ant dashed line around the selection ) I press Ctrl+T ; it enter transform mode. Then I move/scale/rotate, etc...
      3. I finish the action by pressing 'enter' to bake the transformation to pixels, and Ctrl+Shift+A to deselect all ( I remap this one to a more friendly shortcut, Ctrl+D ).
      4. I press 'B' to go back to brush and continue to paint.
      ... with time I do all this step really quickly, so I can transform things on the fly. I hope it will help!

    • @kaii456
      @kaii456 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was SUPER helpful!! I come from photoshop so alot of those actions are familiar with me, I'll remap them like you! Thank you soo much!

      If its a tutorial and helpful key mapping and rebinding, shortcuts, and etc I'm all for it!
      Also, would you happen to know if Krita has a hue and saturation window like photoshop? Thank you so much again!

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      kaii456 oh, the Hue/saturation filter is in Filter>Adjust>HSVAdjustement ( Ctrl+U ). I participated to this page in the doc: docs.krita.org/Introduction_to_Krita_coming_from_Photoshop , it can probably help.

    i can't figure out how to rotate the canvas in krita. i'm used to rotating it using touch gestures on my tablet, but i'm not sure if krita supports that.

    • @DavidRevoy
      @DavidRevoy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends the driver and the version . I think 3.0 was designed to have gesture support for canvas navigation.
      Other way:
      - numpad4 and numpad6 to rotate, and numpad5 to reset rotation. Also Shift+Space work for rotation

  • @dreamingacacia

      FLOSS means Free Libre and Open Source Software (sorry for abusing the accronym, it is a bit cryptic). The software I use is Krita (part of FLOSS family) and yes you can download it for Windows on Krita.org or it is also in the app store or on Steam.
