- Best method is by dividing the roots. Easiest method is by spreading the seeds-direct sow into the soil-just make sure the flowers are blacken and dried out. Cutting method is good to but hard depending on your zone and medium. Mother nature self seed coneflowers all the time so don't stress about it. Have fun and I wish you all the best. I generally just buy 1 plant and then root more if I like the plant.
I love coneflowers! This is such a good and easy way to propogate!
No problem…save dried seed and sprinkle on soil in fall and in spring they start growing. Very easy no sweat.
FYI: for a better success rate on your cuttings, you should take a cutting that is 8” or pencil length with 4 nodes. Strip lower leaves and make sure 2 nodes are below your medium and 2 above. Also don’t push the stem all the way down till it hits the bottom of your container leave some space for the roots to develop. I usually strip all but a few leaves at top on most of my cuttings.

Putting the seed heads in an empty coffee container and shaking really hard makes the seeds separate easier too. And no stab wounds 😉

I used to do that, but the very inside of the cone flower is hard and pointed, so it can be a hazard if you leave the whole thing in the garden and someday step on one! Yikes! Yowee!

@faribajavaherpour710 I generally don't. I follow mother nature instint on this one. Lol. Seed falls on the ground and grow on their own without our help most times. But I thunk that if you lightly cover it. It would help them better. Also protect them from animals like birds who want the seeds

I am in NJ in zone 6 and I just bought some cone flowers at Home Depot. Can't wait to get those seeds. I had seeds from a package but none of them grew. Hopefully these will.

I have a coneflower which is so beautiful, huge flowers and smell like honey. The big fluffy bees 🐝 love it too. My friend wants it too. So I was looking on TH-cam how to propagate coneflowers and came across your video. Your garden is lovely, I wish I had that much space as i propagate hydrangeas, roses, lilies, phlox, you name it 😆

I leave them all winter. The finches love them. Take the down in early spring.
That's a good idea too. I hope to eventually have enough that I won't need to have more and let them be for the birds.

You shouldn't divide a plant while it's flowering
When you propagate using the seeds in the fall, do the flowering plants come up the very next spring or does it need another year to flower?
Hi. Generally, they grow that spring and flower. It could be the variety I have. I also have better luck with the division of the plant, which generally gives me guaranteed flowers since they are more mature. But there are some varieties that take 2 or more years to flower from seeds.

Hi. Lol my garden is a work in progress. Always growing. I don't use rooting hormones. I tired it once and didn't find that I made any difference. So I just take my chances. They are doing good....better if I can stop weed eating them lol
Do you every try covering the cuttings and tray in a plastic bag to reduce transpiration? Especially in a hot area, although maybe it is very humid where you are anyway?

@chippewagirl7299 I have tried using rooting hormones to help but I didn't have any luck. I use the like the dividing method the best. And I have had success with growing them from seed but that requires a bit more work. What is the beat method for you?

Thank you for stopping by. Yes free wood chips from a tree company. We smothered all the weeds with the wood chips. The goal was to plant it so much with flowers that it suppresses the weeds. But we have since moved.

Hi, I'm in zone 7B, I have a mature cone flower that I need to relocate when should I move it? Thanks. P.S. in my area we have very hot summers and mild winters.
Thank you for stopping by. I would wait to move them once fall comes if they are flowering. If no flower. I move them around all summer long. Just make sure to give them some water with the hot hot sun.
