  • This is the first section of the Chattahoochee off of Lake Lanier/Buford Dam. The water is typically crystal clear and very cold (sub 60 degrees year round). The water clarity was a little dirty from a lot of rain, and Lake Lanier is said to have started to turn over causing the water generation to be murky.
Although stocking for this section has ended (I believe), it is stocked nearly every week from the beginning of the season (spring sometimes) until August.
The float is only about 4 miles long, but if you stop to hit all the shoals it can be an all day event. If you just go with the flow anticipate approximately 2 miles per hour float rate.

Ive been kinda scared to kayak from the tailwater ramp. I assumed the water was very fast and unpredictable with the dam opening at times but it doesn't looks so bad in your video. maybe ill give it a try this weekend. looks like some great fishing. Im new to it all and have only been bass fishing on Lanier.

@@TheATFshotmyGerbil the dam release schedules are posted online about 24-48hrs in advance. Always subject to change, but that’s how we plan these floats.

Like those Crescents. Think the K Craft can handle that stretch

@@claydankewich9582 definitely! “20 rock” is the only rapid of concern, and it’s not that bad imo. Hit the middle of the big waves and plow through and you should be fine.

Do you know if it’s a good time to go fishing now in that area ?

This section doesn’t get stocked right now, so while you can still catch trout, it won’t be as easy to hook up.
Further down the hooch, from Sope creek to 41, they are stocking for delayed harvest. It’s catch and release only until May in that section.

What lure were you using they seemed to like it all day?

I used some small rapalas or other slow roll/wobble lures with a lip.
I bass fish usually, and I have caught more trout on bass lures than on trout lures. Lol.
