jackfruit do not know how it tastes but i heard you have to get passed the funky smell! never saw such large ones. i'm curious i'd love to go to thailand.and try that. love the way they do the pineapple. great video!
I LOVE jackfruit now that Ive gotten to try it. You know, when I was a kid I used to chew Juicyfruit gum and wish I could eat it. Comes to find out, Jackfruit IS the flavor of Juicyfruit gum! The flavor is very similar.
Jackfruit smells a bit like rotten chicken, not as strong as Durien. To me it tastes like a cross between a mango and a flower, maybe Llangllang? I hope you get to try some. For me it's a race against the bats, rats, possums and cockatoos, we all like it.
That's amazing. I took one hour to cut and collect the edible parts around the seeds. This guy does half of the job in minutes. And that pop to send the seeds is so neat. The white liquid is super sticky. I clean the lives and tools with vegetable oil.
The glue settles down a bit if you can refrigerate the fruit before you cut it up. I was a lot happier when I learnt about using vegetable oil as a barrier and for clean ups. I'm looking forward to trying their technique when mine are ready in a couple of weeks.
The Jackfruit cutting was interesting except for the unhygienic parts. The metal bar he uses to separate the two halves was in contact with the ground. The girl separating and cleaning the pods is not wearing gloves. She touches her hair then the pods. Same for the girl packaging pods. No gloves and she touches money.
Ha! You think that's bad? Before 2019 it was common at many street food stalls to have a water cooler with a cup tied to it. Anyone eating there or driving by can use the cup to get a drink from the cooler. That rod he used to split the jackfruit is covered in a very sticky, almost glue like substance. So, anything that touches it would stick to it. When my mother-in-law would open one, the knife gets covered in it. It's very difficult to clean off. It's actually starch like what you see when you try to open an unripe banana. Just in case anyone is wondering what I meant by water cooler, it is one of those that you would see at a football game filled with Gatorade and used to soak the winning coach.
You can find them at asian supermarkets in the US if you want to try one, they have a strong smell but it's much sweeter than Durian and not as pungent. Make sure you get a ripe one though because they can be a little rubbery when unripe (the canned ones aren't as good because they are canned while still unripe). Parts of the rind can be cooked into various dishes as a meat substitute as well.
