I've been driving artics for 30 years. Now I've had enough of the long hours and crap wages. No surprise there is a shortage of drivers. The industry needs shaking up

I've had to already. My health has gone so bad I'm lucky if i will see the next few years.
Dad said the same, "no money in it anymore".
He was on decent money, but grossly underpaid for the hassle when there's better alternatives; not that he could continue working with having knee surgery (caused by arthritis, probably attributed to jumping out of lorries/trailers).
Getting disability benefits too was a hassle for him.
Lack of sleep.
I drive for Royal Mail , 21 years , the wife also they trained us up free of charge, and it’s been a good job for us , but I don’t think I would entertain driving for any other company, long hours, sleeping in lay-bys ,poor money ect, I know I’ve been lucky really ,our pay and conditions are pretty good , but it looks like truckers are finally getting the recognition and hopefully wages they deserve
Before I get into this video, I'm going to preempt it by saying this. I've been a Canadian truck driver for over 5 years now and can say with some confidence, truck drivers are among the most under-appreciated, over-worked and under-paid people on the planet.
It's not a glamorous career, and it's completely unfun most days, and it *will* ruin any interpersonal relationships you want to hold onto, but there are days when everything just lines up right, the sun is shining, there is the cool breeze blowing through and the tunes are just right that justifies a lot of the bullshit we deal with.
And Stavros, in my over 5 years, I have YET to pull out from a trailer and pull the lines off. I've come CLOSE plenty of times, but the thing that saves me is I always drop the trailer with the marker (parking) lights on, and always watch the mirror when dropping it. If I notice the lights are still on the trailer, I know I'm still connected.
It's these little things that we are taught by more experienced drivers that make our lives a little easier.
The good days miraculously always outweigh any bad days, that's the only way I can explain why we do this to people who don't
Truck drivers think they’re the only ones who sacrifice lives at home with their families to make a living. Nothing is as aggravating as sitting in the hammer lane in the middle of a twelve hour drive after a ten hour shift for a half an hour waiting on a truck going 62 to pass the guy doing 60 because he thinks he’s the only sob on the road trying to get home.
I can count those days on my hand. The entire annual amount of good days that is. Never knew quitting a job was this hard, I've tried everything in the book but I just cannot get freaking fired
@@tcb1017 Got little fed up with this comment. You don't say it but between the lines you glorify NA trucking as way more difficult than European. Do you know why the trucks are shorter here? Have you ever been on or even seen the Norwegian mountain winter roads? Or the German medieval town which you have to drive through? They just can't be bigger. What kind of Car/truck have you driven in Scandinavia? I jused to drive 25,25m long between Fin-Swe. Now a days I drive 32-34m (trailer/dolly/trailer or 9m+9m+13,5m) all year long. Icy and snowy roads winter time. So I dear you any time to "play around' with a Scania. And yes, up to 34,5m long is a HCT(High Capacity Transport) which is legal in Finland without any special permit but needs certain requirements from the truck. I have mutual respect for professional and responsible truck driving for both sides of the Atlantic. Trucking is no playing anywhere!!

I've talked about trucking with real truckers irl and I've slightly lost my interest since the pay isn't that good and the chances of getting a nice truck to drive are small. Now stop flooding my notifications with "truckers are homeless with no pay dream higher".

20 year on road past HGV at 18 been 8n the job since birth my dad Brought me home from hospital when first born in his foden. Go for it it's a great way of life.

i started at 5 years old with my dad and im still doing it a 11. It always was my dreams but the same thing will happen to you :)
@Viktor Sligo well, at least here youd earn like 1000€ more a month as an owner operator and considering the high risk you carry, id say its not worth it anymore.
I'm very lucky with my truck driving job. Fixed hours and max distance 5 km. Icing on the cake I can cycle to work. I'm a shunter :-)
Judging by OUR Chief Shunter, you’re saying you’re a great driver without any recent experience of driving today’s roads?? 😂😂 (ours does Really go out occasionally, but we have a good culture of banter, so we rip him like he rips us, he Is the senior man with 47yrs on the firm lol
Worked for years in restaurants as a cook and later on as a chef. I dont mind longer hours or some hard work but the pay in that industry was horrible, working 50+ hours, OT paid at 100% of which half gets taxed etc. At the end of the month I had to be glad to have made €2100 after taxes for all of those hours. I had enough of it and finally in 2019 decided to get my C+E drivers license. Took me 6 months, had some odd jobs in between but finally I got it. Found employment at a company who are mainly focused on the UK and Ireland. They took a gamble with me and put me on training for a week with an experienced driver, after that they put me on a week for the Netherlands and after that they decided it was okay to send me out alone. I love it, best choice I have made and I am very fortunate to have found this company. Now also working ~55 hours a week over 5 and half days (leaving on sunday afternoon to catch the ferry), got the weekends off which I never had before and all of this whilst making €3700 on average after taxes. The work it self can quite lonely at times but thats managable. Got a great Mercedes Actros MP4 which while having its quirks, has a great cab to live in. Cheers from the Netherlands

Fair play mate. I've grown up driving been able to drive since I was 11. Always thought about being a driver, but theres no way in hell I'd do it in the UK. The state of driving is appalling it's a battleground. I'm a refrigeration engineer and earn really good money for my age. It's pretty dangerous and you work some loooong hours, sometimes over 24 hour shifts, but I'm home every night. Although I do lots of mileage 800-1200miles per week. And on 40hour weeks plus maybe 30-60 hours overtime a month I can take home £3000-£5000 so it's not bad, you do have to put up with some crap though. Stay safe

Well, I was going all around the Europe in the summers with my dad when I was young. When I got older, I graduated from college, got my education degree, but the jobs in Lithuania offers really low wages. So I was thinking about going to work as a truck driver. Got my licence, everything, and I started working this job. Right now I am working for around a year and it is one of the best decisions I made. 4x better paid than regular college degree work, I don't really matter these long hours I just like it. If anyone is thinking about becoming one - think of that hours for sure but if you are passionate about this job - I think you need to try it by yourself.

@@bakoty6571 Good question. I have plenty of good time when I am back home and I don't need to think about any money to be honest. When there was no corona - travels, bought an atv, just living like I always wanted to live. But yeah. Most of the time I am far from home but I can't say I don't like it. Just life choice that I made, life path that I chose at the moment. :) Keep safe.
Great motivational comment. You may not believe me but I have masters degree in clinical psychology from one of the best universities of Iran, but my heart always was with trucking since I was just 3 years old. Jobs in Iran for my degree pay 150 dollars a month!!! So I have decided to migrate to Canada, and become a truck driver there. I wish the bests for you for increasing my motivation.

It's you , the drivers from East europe that makes my truck driving in Norway realy bad .
Your inncome are in many times 10% of whats normal in Norway.
It's against the laws in any country and against EU laws to not pay the minimum salary in the country you are inn . Minimum salary pr hour in Norway are 170 nkr = 17€. Companys like kreiss , Vlantana, Girteka, Prizma, Kauritel +++ has been taken in Norway for paying under 2€ pr hour. This makes competiton impossible. It's social dumping. This companys drives in many times for 7€ pr 10 km. It's hardly for the diesel. Cabotage and East europeans kills our jobs . Thousends of Norwegian truck drivers are now whitout work , thanks to people like you. For not following the laws. Diesel and parts stolen from out trucks to.
Weekend rests in the trucks for months also against the laws.
Im so glad for the New regulations from january 2024 , this will Hopefully stop this Madness for good.

I think its a great job in sweden, as long as you start early like 05:00 am and finish like 15:00 or 16:00 its all good. Get home every single day and get solid sleep in the home and not the truck
My day starts at 8:00 and lasts to 17:30. I'm home usually at 18:15 - 18:30. Not too shabby but i'd prefer starting at 7:00, just to have that extra hour of free time when i get home.
I prefer sleeping in the truck to be honest. In the UK if i drive to the top of Scotland or was down south i can finish at about 4-5pm so i get a good 6 hours to myself, if i have a more 'local' day job i can finish at 8-9pm easily... It grates tbh
Best thing I ever done was to not renew my HGV, finally no stress.

Agree, usually come across drivers that say, "I just love driving trucks" like plane spotters or something and don't see the light that they're being manipulated by the company on peanuts

Anyone who wants to become a truck driver: become the best you can! It's hard work, long work, you need a whole lot of patience, but being a trucker is also rewarding. Don't let your dreams be shattered with experiences from others, if you really want to work hard and become a trucker, then dó!!

I am a Canadian flatbed driver and I just took an oversize load "ten foot eight inches" across the Saulte Saint Marie Bridge, picked it up in North Dakota. It felt like an amazing victory. Also have a printer in the truck, pretty much have to with all the permits you need for oversize and the boarder documentation.
I’ve been doing it 8 years. I agree with everything said here. Long hours, crap pay. Bus driver shorter hours, self loading cargo. Set route & often paid more 👍🏻
EnglishAndy , I’ve done both, coaches, double deckers, and class one arctics yes buses do load there selfs but you still got to deal with twats and twats in cars, at least with trucks you only got to deal with the twats in cars. I’ve driven for the m.o.d. London transport plus others. Also several different truck companies, give me a truck every time. PS. Now retired.

5 to 6 hour course here in Australia, then you’re free to cause mayhem. !!!
lol Same in US, except no course. (do need a learner permit for a bit, then free to test onto the road to run solo. I saw a non-English speaker fail the written testing, and immediately re take the test (That is a problem because legally, you have to be capable of English communication, and you can only take the test once a day, but the Federal testing center, in Kansas, did not care...).
Literally just hold your HR unrestricted for 1 year you don't even need to even drive a rigid in that year and sit the MC in an auto....

Should also mention, 13 to 15 hour days with a 1.5 hour round trip to get to work & back (my case)... Then once finally home getting showered & having a evening meal, you'll be lucky to get 4 hours sleep.

Mani Shoker Exactly. It’s why I got out years ago. Those hours, the stress, and more, it’ll kill you in the end. I did a runner out of the country altogether and retired from the rat race at 45.

One of my favourite job's as a teenager was working as a Brester/helper on truck's, van's. I loved every minute and I haven't lost the passion to work in the industry. Unemployed presently but starting out to get my truck licence hopefully next year. I'm starting at the bottom, one thing I've going for me is passion not naivety I know how hard this work is . I can drive most machinery but less the paperwork, my biggest mistake was never getting the licences required. It's like having a dog and having to bark yourself . ☘️🇮🇪
Deliveries to high street stores at high noon and of course you couldn’t park a motorbike if you tried and you turn up in this 40ft truck and it’s just impossible to park anywhere near the place... 🤦♂️
I passed through a programme through warehouse to wheels and I passed both c and c+e first time. Then I went on the road and seen how hard and stressful the job is. Much respect for drivers even more these days. Long hours, very stressful and so many idiots on the road. Anyway I was used as a cover driver and they pushed me on the artics and I didn’t feel confident through lack of experience. I gave it up not long after as I don’t feel I was given enough time to get my experience in the rigid and my head was up my backside on artics. I enjoyed your video and I agree with the points you made.
Tankers are the way to go, no waiting for toe rag fork lift drivers, connect your hose, turn the pump on and away you go, no pissing about, but still long hours though, but the pay is a lot better than curtains or containers !!
Haven't done it for years, and what used to really bug me was all the jokers' I delivered to saying to me "wow, I wished I had your job being outside all day". They usually said those comments' on a beautiful, blue sky sunny summer day. They forgot about all the absolutely miserable days when it was bitterly cold, snowing all day, and you've gotta drive in it with no choice. And, my all time personal favourite -- loading/unloading in the pouring rain. Didn't hear many people wishing they were in my shoes, then.
When cars sit in your blind spots and then honk at you like you did something wrong
My dad ran a small haulage company of artics for 50 years . I went everywhere with him as a kid . I didn't follow I went into the civil service. I still love looking at trucks it makes me very nostalgic . I adored the trucks as a kid . My dad is 80 now and has early signs of dementia, but when I bring up trucks his eyes still light up . He ll talk about trucks he bought 45 years ago with absolute clarity

Maybe one of the hardest jobs . It's not all about and only driving. Oooh, there is much more, from waiting for loading, unloading, flat tires, being alone and sleeping in trucks :D Not easy and beautiful, but I love it
"When your 10 minutes late, and than can't tip for 5 hours."
I work on the other side of this; running the plant tipping off trucks and operating the weightbridges.
a) You're late. We close at 16:00 I know its not your fault due to traffic ect, but its 10 minutes AFTER closing. All the plant is already shut down and locked up, weighbridge is closed and locked up and everyone's out the door.
b) When we do stay open late, certain drivers and haulage companies take the piss out of us;
I'm only 10 minutes late. Then its I'm only 20 minutes late. And I'm only 30 minutes late. "I'll be here by 17:00", then arrive at 17:45.
When haulage companies know you'll stay open late, they'll schedule their trucks in late and run the fleet elsewhere during the day. So we don't get much extra work done, and theres a big rush between 1600-1800 with drivers we've never seen all day.
Not always the case! I’ve been held up many a time, especially when I’ve turned up on time, a fair few companies treat truckers almost like the enemy, they’re having a bad day and you (the trucker) is the only person they can take it out on. Also, some companies treat the eta’s as a perfect science, and will show absolutely no leeway! They don’t take into consideration that traffic, delays in previous deliveries etc. Frustrating!
@@garryclark4653 True, there are some plants that are equally bad.
There's usually quite a few funny stories floating around where driver's malicious compliance lands said plant operators in hot water.
What I do on my end is tell all the drivers that the weighbridge closes at 1530 (last weigh in), ready for the site to close at 1600. If someone runs slightly late we can usually sort them. If they're very late then they can park overnight on site (separate washroom and kitchen available 24/7 for drivers) and they're first in the queue in the morning.
I’m a American truck driver drive a 2018 international pulling a 53 foot dry van. I’d say dealing with the other cars and traffic is my biggest headache of the day
I like the freedom. As long as I make my pick up and delivery on time, I can do what I want in between. I don't have a floor manager looking over my shoulder making sure I'm doing my job right. It's a pretty secure job. There will always be a need for drivers until those autonomous Terminator trucks take over. But that's going to take a very long time.

I don't hate truck drivers, mad respect for these heroes keeping the world running by delivering food, products and overall the world moving.

After 25 years hgv driving told we need a cpc was the last straw for me. just a money scam glad to be out of it now.

Great vid - my grandpa and Dad were both hauliers and I’ve been parking up 40 toners in our own yard since I was about 15, got my class 1 at 21 and did the job until I was 30. Loved the good bits, but the tough bits like you describe just became to much and I quit. I’ve been out the game 15 years and still miss the good bits.
You made me laugh re the Distribution Centres. In the 90’s I used to deliver to Bookers and it was horrendous. I once turned up at 4pm on a Thursday and they closed at 4 - I was asked to wait overnight (I only had 1 pallet), anyway, Friday morning came and that particular Bookers didn’t take deliveries on a Friday, so I was then asked to drive back to base...
I,also used to do tilts to the steel works. If you’ve ever done that, you know how much hard work that is. Had to completely strip the trailer to allow loading by crane, then had to rebuild the whole trailer. Tough days..
My best jobs - trunking a trailer down to Felixstowe over night, then return a different trailer. Just good driving.
The next step up from a tractor with 5th wheel is a rigid with an articulated trailer. Something that's common in Sweden.
I think that the primary issue that you have to consider if you want to be a truck driver is that you shall not get upset easily in traffic.
When I did Goods In for a number of years I always helped get the goods off, and any returns back on, as quick and easy as possible for the driver. I don't know if they appreciated it but it was my job to help as best I could.
My nephew was a truck driver and he looked like a Zombie all the time through lack of sleep, he said having a shower was a luxury. He once took a truck out early one morning only to breakdown twenty miles from his depot, when he rang through to tell his boss the receptionist told him the previous driver reported a clutch issues with it but the night manager ignored him. His wagon stopped across a roundabout and caused a five mile tailback. It was his claim to fame as it was mentioned on national radio LOL

Great informative video! I myself wanted to try trucking but i can't because my side vision is really bad (i have to turn my head so that i could see something on the side that a normal person would see without turning his head that way). But yeah its true that you have long days and really you have many other jobs that are better. For example just anything that has to do with computers and stuff like that because it's the future.
Transport manager's upset me the most, well the majority of them anyway.

You know Stavros you hit the nail on the head with all this. I've been in trucking all my life with my family and the kids hear the good and funny stories about trucking then want to do it. My Dad and I have taken many people in a truck and when we get out we get told we are stupid just for putting up with the drivers on the road, I always say why do you drive like that? I like that while I'm going through the training for my CDL I keep getting told how this will open up so many opportunities for me by guys who have drove truck for a short time lol. I'm glad that the company I'm going to I have to have my CDL but I will only be driving truck a couple of times a year since that's not what my job will be. Top man for the vid, thank you. I did a few years doing agency driving and can relate to nearly all the comments- especially RDC’s where they won’t tip you for hours even though you’re multidrop (bread) and then you go to pull off bay and find they’ve taken the entire load.. Then also being told to drive ADR goods with no ADR licence as you’re “just an agency”. In the end it was too stressful and I went back to being a dentist!
Good morning stavros. I used to deliver to building sites a lot and its amazing how far a couple of packets biscuits will go for the forklift drivers. Most regularly sites I'd pull into as soon as they see you they would be unloading me within 5 minutes. Custard creams biscuits seem to be the favourite. Stay safe everyone. Cheeerrrs.

Thank you for taking your time to make nice videos. My dad told me to keep away from the driving jobs and for ones I listen to him, I gues his >30 years doing transport and other work in the buines he hade seen both advantage and disadvatage of the job

Go for it Vyde, I was like you, for me it was like getting paid to do my hobby lol. I'd still be doing it if I hadn't got ill, sure many a time I was driving, trying to make a deadline pissed off thinking to myself there must be something better than this. But if i had the chance to do it all again i wouldn't change a thing and I'd never complain knowing what I know now

I would say do it, been a year since I started and not looked back. Not every day is plain sailing but after working 7 years constantly in the same warehouse this job is like a breath of fresh air!

You just earned another Sub friend ! the lvl of accuracy from you and the pop up comments are spot on ! I gave up trucks while ago, i do miss them BUT got fed of being treated like an ignorant and seen as a number and not a person....i provide a highly professional and efficient service as a driver/character, so i expect to be paid and treated like one.....if only the majority refused jobs like some of us do, trucking industry would become much more tolerable !

WOW! Just found this and as I listened and read some of the things drivers were saying.. I thought, sounds like you guys in Europe have the same problems we do here in the states. Recently retired after owning and driving my own rig for 40 years and I've made every complaint you guys did over the years... I guess it's true, we drivers are a special breed of brothers. :)
Finally a driver that actually tells it like it is, IV been class 1 over 20 years done dipper tanker container bonded the lot and there is good times but there are shite times too, and your right about mistakes WE ALL MAKE and we all laugh when we see others make them. And IV always said look if you want to come into the industry great but be sure you know what your getting into cos it's not all sitting with your arm out the window chomping on a Yorkie, well done fella keep safe
In my experience with the job last few years, when you get to back doors of lots of dcs aldis in particular, once you speak English there faces drop mostly run still by poles, I've seen they treat there own better its hard being an outcast in your own country, but it's how it is at many delivery points due to the millions of foreigners here sadly.

Amazing video, once again, mate. I think it's a very useful guide for the young and those interested (or those who've always wondered about the job). As someone who's changed many, many jobs across several industries, I don't think I'd be half as happy in my current career (which I LOVE every day immensely) if I didn't try everything else I thought, at the time, i wanted to be. I like your advice and think everyone should try everything they want, thousands of dollars in training aside - life is one and the absolute worst thing would be to always wonder what the other job would be.
I've grown up on trucks thanks to my dad's job and loved anything and everything truck-related but I do believe you, as I'm friends with truckies, that it's a very tough, very 'ungrateful' and unforgiving job and it's one thing to appreciate the magnificent vehicles they are and a totally different to deal with everyday issues that arise with driving them for a living. Still, one life, gotta try it.

I m from India and I'd like to be a driver but the conditions are terrible in India , drivers don't get respect not paid enough and lack of facilities and corruption officials which really make the job miserable I thought that driving in Europe was a paradise I mean facilities , respect off course the pleasure of driving across beautiful scenery and pay but you really opened my eyes , afteralll it's a tough job and arrogant and rude people are everywhere !
And yeah pls make a video of good points as well .

My father was a truck driver and he always said that I should never do do this job, so I'm studying to become a truck engineer instead haha
Do not let someone influence you to the point of not doing something you want/desire to do unless they have good reasons. You might regret not doing something by not doing what you wanted to do.

Good video Stavros, I started out as a brester on a D series many years ago and the driver told me stay away. I looked at it and felt the small reward didnt reflect the large responsibility. As for drivers not being respected its brutal, very few understand whats involved. I always treat drivers with respect as in my work as an industrial plant fitter I deal with heavy loads a lot and try and help the guys get in & out without too much hassle.

No idea where you drive but here it's very different, truckers have a good income and are greatly needed here.

the problem is that most people think of trucking the way it was like 20-30 years ago. for example my grandad said to me do you want to live like a dog and never go home or sleep when i told him im gonna be a truck driver. can people not tell the difference? maybe it was bullshit job then but now its a very good job in my opinion and needs to have the same respect as any other low level city office job.

That pisses every driver off regardless of what they're driving, except of course the twat responsible.

My grandfather my grand fathers father in law (his wife father) and my father was truck drivers. I used to go on trips with my grandfather to pick up marble blocks changing feom 10 to 20 tons each block. And then he would drop me off at home and take them to port to send it offshores. I also have interest in trucks and I always think of it as a backup if I fail to become a pilot. I will take on the family job.

I passed my tests through the company I work for and did the mod4. It’s a parcel delivery company. I prefer working nights and the job is trunking from a to b then back to a. I know it’s not the most exciting HGV job, but I’ve been wanting to do this for some time now. All I need is a route an I’m good to go. I have looked at general haulage jobs and about 99% require experience, so at the very least this would give me that to a degree.

Stepped back into class 1 after a break of a fair few years ( to which I enjoyed) the break that is ! After loosing my company and Job last year I renewed my license! What a shirt sharp shock stepping back into an arctic! Realised now why I gave it up ! Long hours, somber moments, stressful job however decent company and decent team I’m working for now. It’s taken time to get back to where I once was. My advice keep away from agencies approach companies direct and be honest with them don’t tell them you will work all the hours you can, don’t tell them your passionate when your not ! And listen to those that have done the job. That’s my advice
It will cost a youngster a small fortune to get a truck licencethen when they get out on the road they have the gards and the RSA and god knows how many others trying to take it back off them. It's not what it used to be when I started driving 30 years ago but unfortunately that's all I know. Laid off at the moment.
Exactly, licence is hard got and all they want is to take it off you.
At least in Finland getting a truck license costs 400€ when done via school system.
"In a week you'll be doing 60 to 70 hours" but how? EU has regulations about driving hours and it clearly states that 90h is a maximum for two weeks.
Working 60 to 70 hours a week are not only driving hours but also Loading and unloading and wait Times because sometimes you cant load or unload when you arrive but you have to wait 3 hours.

Oh, right. I do 11 hours a day, driving a bus. That’s eleven driving hours, not waiting two hours then a few hours of actual driving. For minimum wage. No wonder I’m tired.

Passed my artic rather late at 37 with hopes for a more consistent income. Four days into my training as a new driver, the head trainer asked whether I'm married and have kids, to which I said yes. Right away his tone changed into discouraging me from taking up this driving job and to choose between the two. He went on to say I just cannot have both and sacrificing the family time for this job is just not worth it. A bit gutted though...
