    I’m a big believer in driving and using cars like this. It’s what they were meant for.
    But out in traffic in a car this historical and irreplaceable wow. Especially on the old tires. That’s pushing it.

    Dang! What a cool car! My uncle was/is a Porsche enthusiast, his first was a late 70's 911SC. The first thing he said to me when I slid into the passenger seat for the first ride he ever took me for was as I was starting to close the door. He said "You only have to pull the door to, then firmly but gently pull it closed." I still remember the feel of that "click" of precision to this day.

    I just looked up who Rod said was his first car client, Cameron Healy. Sounds like he started a craft brew business in Hawaii back in 1994 called Kona. Smart guy. Not many people even had heard of a craft beer back in 1994, and he marketed it to the local Hawaii culture first. I'm sure he's a multi multi millionaire. But his son is named "Spoon", so I'm sure Cameron is an old Hippie living that dream. Rock on man..👍🍻

    At 2:12 you can see the "Sascha"- Sportsracer which Ferdinand Porsche designed in 1923 for Austro-Daimler. He had seen the Bugatti Brescia 1250cc with 30hp that was so light he could beat a Hispano Suiza with 150hp. So he constructed this car with a 1500cc four cylinder and 30hp and 1300 lbs. He drove it personally at the Passo Stelvio and overtook an Isotta-Fraschini with 7 litre Engine.

They could have left everything the way it was except maybe paint it. It would be the evolution of the car. Lemans 1st winner and an old retired race car in the historics. Probably not that expensive of a car. Just labor cost. So much of it isn't original or else porsche would have it.

    • @JCW80
      @JCW80 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If the owner got his hands on the car before they realized it was the first le mans Porsche, then he probably got it fairly cheap (relatively speaking), then the cost of restoration was probably over what he paid to buy the car, but still not "expensive" per se...but now that everyone understands what the car is, it's value (think what a group of super-collectors like Seinfeld would be willing pay at auction) is probably orders of magnitude over what the owner has invested. I wouldn't be surprised for a second if this car was valued at 8 figures.

    • @thomasbailey4139
      @thomasbailey4139 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JCW80 it's not like Porsche restored it though. It's a couple guys in California. Not Porsche parts just stuff they made and bolted on. Cool car. But I just don't see this being worth more than kit car value

    • @JCW80
      @JCW80 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Kit car value? No way, buddy. You can buy a kit 356, built and ready to drive, from some respected kit builders (like Beck) for less than $40k. You would be hard pressed to find any real 356 consumer car, in beat up, non-running condition, in that price range. It also doesn't matter that Porsche didn't restore it, there are a lot of restorers that are highly respected by the community, like Rod Emory. And of course, let's not forget, it's the first car that Porsche fielded for a race, and the race was Le Mans no less, and it was a winning car. Race history plays a HUGE role in value for collector cars, that detail alone would push the value of this car up more than any other detail about this car. I'm not saying it makes a lot of sense that a car like this would probably sell for millions; I'm just saying that's the reality. :-)

      Enlighten me. What American vehicle in it's class could out race this? Many American cars would outdrag it sure, but when it comes to handling, it would be far quicker round corners. I'm no Porsche fan tbf, but to write them all off as slow just seams ignorant.

      Last actual remaining "first Porsche" Type 64 is still unrestored. You can see quite a lot of similarities between that 1939 car and this one. Both "borrowed" heavy from Tatra 97. Funny enough Muricans destroyed 2 other Porsche Type 64 in existence so only 1 remains.

      I'd like to see Christie's appraisal of this car for auction. I'd bet it would easily clear $20 million if it truly is the first. Won't surprise me to see it at auction in a couple years.

      Probably pretty tricky to change the wheels on it and I doubt it actually gets driven around much anyway. I would guess it mostly travels on the back of a trailer.

      He must mean rims? Tires expire after 6 years, and that's modern rubber. 60 year old tires would probably fail very quickly.
