She is later worship as Ishtar by the Babylonian. Astarte by the ancient Phoenicians, Canaanites and some say Israeli. Also via Phoenicians she is transported to Greek island of Cyprus and localised as Aphrodite. And later Rome combined her with the Roman Goddess Venus to create Venus we know today.
Always interesting to learn about past deities. First time I heard of her. Interesting she was given the titles : “the queen of heaven”, the same title given to Artemis of Ephesus, and then the Virgin Mary. Most likely each adopted from the other from cross cultural influences.

Great video; I really loved the discussion of conversion vs adhesion. It wasn't a topic in theology with which I was at all familiar. It also made me curious to read Metamorphosis & some of the scholarly imterpretations thereof. We have a non-zero body of writing by ancient Greek & Roman scholars who were skeptical or dismissive of the supernatural, including even their own cultures' founding myths. That said, I'd have liked some mention of my favorite Catholic church in Rome: the Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. It's a Catholic church dedicated to the Madonna ("Santa Maria") built atop ("sopra", etymologucally related to the English "super") a temple not -- as the name suggests -- to Minerva, but to Isis. In fact, the temple has *three* layers & you can go further down from the newer pagan temple to the deeply cramped temple it was built on top of. Beyond the simple "cool factor" of seeing three differemt periods of architectural styles on top of each other, I see the Santa Maria sopra Minerva as an archeological metaphor for syncretism & ppl's instincts to preserve the holy. It makes a lot of sense that a Catholic church built atop a goddess of motherhood & salvation would be dedicated to St. Mary. In Catholicism, the Madonna plays a substantial role in the salvation of sinners, such as her pivotal role in Göthe's "Faustus", where she pleads for the possibility of Faustus' redemption. The Madonna also protects seafarers under the aspect "Madonna, stella Maris" ("Madonna, the Star of the Sea"). I generally agree w/ the theologians who argue that St. Mary absorbed these elements in no small part from Isis (as well as elements of Venus Genetrix, Aphrodite Urania, & Vesta). To me, it shows the fluidity of culture & of how believes change w/i a culture. Christianity didn't spread to the polyyheistoc Mediterranean by stamping out pagan practices (at first); it adapted & absorbed elements of the polytheistic belief systems, incorporating them into a new Roman Catholicism.

This channel has been one of my favorites for years, so I'm glad you don't plan on quitting. I think the problem with any educational videos is that there will always be some people who watch it once and never again, which probably contributes to the treadmill concern. I'm not one of those people, I do rewatch videos sometimes when I want to refresh my memory about something, but I'm not sure how to completely forestall that from happening. Even if educational TH-cam channels were on a TV station like Discovery, there'd still be people who wouldn't really be rewatching something like that after the first time.

I've heard youtubers using patreon for so long and always wondered why youtube didn't just integrate something akin to patreon into youtube itself, so that a creator could do things like make videos available early to patrons without the views not counting as views on youtube for the purpose of recommendations, and just so that it stays integrated into one platform. Then when youtube released memberships I wondered why creators didn't flock to it en masse for exactly those type of reasons, now that I've heard you say how for old patreon users only have to pay 5% there and youtube takes 30%, it makes perfect sense why so maby creators are sticking with patreon.
I love this channel's videos for their good, interesting content. The topics are intriguing. What I really like in this video is Dr. Andrew dropping the formalities and talking to us as if we're in a bar, telling us his thoughts, opinions and predictions I always loved when we got a story from the teacher, one that wasn't always about a topic we were studying

Your discussion on conversion brought to mind my own background as a Quaker. Does the “debate” over whether the Maria Lactans motif is inspired by images of Isis and Horus fall into the category of “things that are only a matter of debate because Christians can’t let go of the ‘uniqueness’ of their religion?” 🤔
It's probably also a question of "if two images depict grass as green, how can we know if they are connected?" A breastfeeding mother is one of the most ubiquitous sights in any household (until we sanitised and stigmatised it). For establishing a connection between depictions of this scene, we have to prove that there actually was a direct influence. "Looks kinda similar" is not proof, unfortunately.
Another Egyptian goddess who was adopted by Rome was Maat, the Goddess of Justice. She was admitted to the Roman pantheon by Augustus under the name of Justicia. As Lady Justice she still stands above court houses in Europe and America, blindfolded and carrying a sword and a pair of scales. That's longevity!
Themis(Justice) is Greek, and she was a titanid. Maat has a role in the afterlife and the cosmic order, it is not the personification of Justice as the Greeks understand it. Ananke fulfilled a cosmic role in Greek mythology.
@@UiliamLima-jv9yu As an Egyptian goddess, who became the daughter of Ra, Ma'at did not personify any one Greek concept. She embodied several abstract nouns, including equity (in the legal sense) and harmony. She had a pivotal role in the afterlife, where she weighed your heart against a feather after you denied having committed any of 42 sins. If your heart was too heavy, you would not go through to heaven. However, she also had a role among the living. The royal official in charge of justice was The Priest of Ma'at. Judges wore her image on their robes.
Hey Andrew, this has been another great video! I always enjoy the great stuff you give us all for FREE on TH-cam.
I'm glad you're not quitting, and are planning to go farther! I love the channel, and hope you find it as rewarding as we do. Thank you! :)
I love this channel's videos for their good, interesting content. The topics are intriguing.
What I really like in this video is Dr. Andrew dropping the formalities and talking to us as if we're in a bar, telling us his thoughts, opinions and predictions
I always loved when we got a story from the teacher, one that wasn't always about a topic we were studying
I'm happy to know how motivated you are to keep up your good work.
All these good history channels leaving yt or partially shifting over to Nebula and other services is quite annoying. I find your take on this very reasonable and I applaud your ambition sir. This channel is quite unique and I really enjoy your videos.
love your transparency in your comments post video. I love your work and look forward to new material whenever you feel inspired. studied anthropology in college and am an obsessed amateur historian so your channel is awesome!
Wow. So glad I subscribed awhile ago. This is an incredible compilation of current scholarship on what I would characterize as Mysticism or Gnosis.
And it’s awesome that you’re going to keep going!
Kudos on educating the public on these financial aspects behind the scenes. It really helps great independent media survive.
loving the ambitious plans! an EVEN bigger and better, RFB, I can't wait to see what that would mean. I also just want to say that the channel is one of my favorites as is already :)
I’m not happy with Patreon, but it seems to be the best we have right now (seriously, TH-cam? 30%??). I’m glad it allows you to do what you do, including bringing in experts (that is seriously admirable-we’ve all seen videos by people that clearly have no idea what they’re on about and are simply reading Wikipedia). Your channel is great and your an awesome host. All the best
Your discussion on conversion brought to mind my own background as a Quaker. We make a distinction between convincement -- the belief that one joins the Society of Friends after having been convinced to it by the Presence of God within every person -- and conversion -- the life-long process of living Quaker teachings and developing them into a way of life.
I have subsribed to Patreon after your pitch. I was just about to go watch Dre Puca's video and your tone shift made me stay and listen. I have never patroned a channel before, for what it's worth. Thanks for your enhtousiasm and factual approach. Mistakes are the fabric of humanity, collaboration to overcome them is civilization. Long live.
Love your scientific approach to topics
Love your channel. I'm glad to hear you're continuing.
You provide SO MUCH VALUE. I'm excited that your channel is here to stay. :)
You offer high-quality, thoughtful videos jam packed with information. I am grateful that you are continuing on TH-cam and will explore the Patreon option. Would love to see your channel get even bigger… Best of luck to you!
I joined your Patreon a couple months ago because Religion for Breakfast is a needed voice! I have learned so much from your channel, and expanded my worldview. I am deeply appreciative of what you're doing here. Thank you.
Thank you, Dr Henry, for the candour and drive. Loved this channel since I first began watching and your content is what had me want more from this and other historical fields. So glad you will keep the channel up because not too many people do it the way you do, nor offer the same material. Also an inspiration for me as I finish this stage in my own academic journey.
The most objective take I have heard on this...I will watch you where -ever I can find you-tube or not......super informative.
Awesome! I love your content. I follow you for maybe 5 years or so. I have learned so much and I've also got so many new perspectives because of you. I must have spent hundreds of hours reading articles and wikipedia because you've inspired me and made me curious about so many topics. I really appreciate you being on youtube, though it becomes harder for creators every year. I do support some youtube content creators on patreon, so I might not be able to support you too in the near future. But I wanted to let you know that you matter and your content matters and youtube would be less attractive without you. Thank you so much. Please continue your great work. You are awesome!
Thank you for the time you take to enlighten us on various religions and their subtopics. The channel is a gem!
Love this collab! Two of my favorite TH-cam channels 💚
Glad you're not quitting!
As someone preparing to launch a new channel, this video was a literal Godsend. Thanks for your wonderful content. Truly inspiring.
Extremely informative and interesting! Thank you sooo much!
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your scholarly caveats: so refreshing! Keep it up. Thanks.
Just found you a few weeks ago while getting ready to visit the ruins in Tulum, Mexico. Your channel has significantly brightened up my youtube experience- im actually excited to log on and see something new again! That you so much for your responsible, collaborative, ethical, and informative videos. I recieve spiritual calm from your channel in a way that not much else online affords me.
So glad to hear you are pushing through some of the negative thoughts. Love your videos!
Another great video and great history lesson. Glad to hear you are not losing interest in making content and would love to see you more on other social platforms. Adding video clips and link trees on IG, tic toc and FB are a great way to cross-platform you page with minimal additional work involved.
This kind of reminds me of how us Mexicans took Mary and pretty much turned her into a whole goddess. I could just imagine how this first went down between the Spanish priest and the natives/first meztizos like “Jesus , Abraham Moses? Ok cool they sound great, but tell us more about Jesus mom, she sounds great”
I recommend the book, the flower world prophecy by Monique and James Gonzalez. Evangelical preparation.
youre american
@@musiczkl98 pardon me *us Americans whom are the descendants of people who were born in Mexico
@@SeorgeGoros exactly just know youre not mexican👍
@@musiczkl98 im not a Paisa, i am Mexican tho . I know what you mean but at the same time nobody uses it as a nationality, more of an ethnic identity, not by choice either 99% of people would know what I mean, just nerds like you who think they’re telling me something I didn’t know and who everyone hates will occasionally point that out. But don’t worry, you’ll get a girlfriend one day. Just believe in yourself
You are one of my favorite 🎉 I look forward what you have in store. You've gotten better and better!
Hurray for you and sticking it out ❤ Much more success to come.
You always put out great videos! So well thought out!
Thank you so much!
As always, I appreciate your care and effort into research, citing sources and etc.
I obsess so much over these things, and every time a new video of yours comes along I eat them up! So glad to hear you’re fired up!
I’ve learned much from your videos. I’m grateful for your work.
I’m glad you’re staying on the platform. I don’t have many reasons left to stay on TH-cam
Hi Andrew, great video as always. I have always felt that Judaism and Christianity borrowed heavily from Egyptian religion. How could they not? On another front, thanks for your commentary at the end of this presentation. I appreciate your honesty.
I'm old enough to remember "the zeitgeist" movie that blew up in the early 2000s. The "Isis Mary" thing sparked the memory
It's a fun short vid. But don't let it suck you in
Wow I did not expect to see Dr. Puca here!
I always immediately click on new videos from you.
I'm really glad of the transparency. I prefer to watch you on Nebula, and it would not break my heart if you moved off of YT entirely.
Yes! My favorite TH-cam channel isn't going anywhere. Thank goodness!
I enjoyed your video, I'm a devotee of Isis myself, and she has changed my life. I love learning about the history of the cult of Isis, good job.
Are you a member of a group or is it a private belief thing?
@@LimeyLassenIt's my belief, I don't belong to any group.
As per your comments at the end of the video, FWIW, I really enjoy your videos and greatly appreciate the effort you put into them.
Thank you.
I am very grateful for your channel!
I really like your channel brother. I hope and pray all your needs and somewants are given from the work you do. I have learned so much from your channel over the last 8 or 9 years.
Thanks for being so open about your intentions with the channel, Henry. Your hard work is very appreciated. Since you're willing to diversify more your content in 2024, are you open to suggestions? I would very much like to see essays from you on the african and afro-diasporic religions. Maybe something about the conections of the ancient egyptian gods and other african worships? (For example, the Yoruba pantheon of Orisas?). Thanks again!
Thanks for the transparency and clarification. I'm in for another eight!
Thank you so much for your dedicated work
I fvcking LOVE Dr. Angela Puca! She and Ronald Sutton are my two favorite academics regarding paganism and the occult.
Very glad you're not closing up shop! Love your videos and concepts, keep up the great work.
Will likely be joining your patreon very soon, and recommend anyone who watches regularly to do so. (Sorry I’ve waited so long).
Keep going my ghy! I jus found ya channel a month ago wouldnt have found it if u stopped. Now your my go to with un biased opinions and scholarly facts.
As always love your hard work!
yo man, i loooove your channel, besides wikipedia and the internet archive, your channel is one of the few online things ive considered donating to. im very happy to know you are staying. would you consider doing more videos on the religious aspects of the pre-proto/proto indo europeans? your video about the sky father got me reading a lot about that topic! specially about the kurgan hypothesis hehe : ^)
I really love your videos and I'm glad you will be continuing to make more.
Yeah I seen a Greco-Roman mosaic where there were Nubian priests and Priestess to Isis it was in the border town between Roman Egypt and Nubia.
You are amazing dude! 😎
Wonderful presentation. Thank you very much !
Hey Andrew, this has been another great video! I always enjoy the great stuff you give us all for FREE on TH-cam. Like seriously your videos are better than any documentary Netflix or the History channel put out.
As a small and still quite new channel, I really appreciated hearing what you said at the end. I'm definitely feeling the hamster wheel thing and I constantly have to remind myself that at this point I'm making videos as a hobby and I can't afford to treat this as a full time job (especially since I do also have an actual full time job). But I also love making educational content which pushes me on to keep going regardless.
Anyway, keep up the great work! I hope 2024 exceeds all your expectations. You were one of the channels that inspired me to start making content on TH-cam in the first place, and I will always support your content in any way I can! (sadly can't afford patreon right now, but maybe some day. God knows if anyone deserves it, it's you)
Oof, as someone teaching religious studies atm, the concern about spreading misinformation at the end hit close to home. Thank you for putting together these resources!
What a great collaboration. Love both channels. Heading over to her channel too.
We learn so much from your Channel. Please keep instructing us👍
Would love to see your take on the Celtic goddess Epona :)
Your content is amazing and deeply meaningful for a lot of people myself included.
Thank you for making these videos :)
Thank you for giving me more video suggestions I'm constantly looking for TH-camrs of the same caliber as you and there aren't many
Her evolution feels so much like the abrahamic god
She's much more pure, nice and caring than him.
