  • Dustin Pedroia was one of the best players in Red Sox history, winning Rookie of the Year, MVP, four Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, and countless other accolades. He was one of the faces of Boston sports for over a decade and was one of the best defenders at second base in MLB history. Unfortunately, injuries ended up derailing a sure-fire Hall of Fame career, yet his ability and impact on the field were immense. Having last played in MLB in 2019, Pedey will be eligible for the 2024 MLB Hall of Fame Ballot. In this video, we dive into the career of Dustin Pedroia, explore what made the Laser Show a dominant player, and evaluate his candidacy for Cooperstown.

    I'd say no way to his HoF chances, but who knows, we are in a very lenient time for HoF honorees. As long as Jim Edmonds with a career .903 OPS, 8 Gold Gloves and almost 400 HRs can't get a sniff, its silly to consider guys like Pedroia and McCutchen

    I think he can make it in if there’s a weak class, Pedroia was a great player and teammate, hope he gets that opportunity.

    Dustin Pedroia and Bobby Doerr have very similar numbers and amount of time played. Doerr is in the HOF.

    Ultimately Pedroia likely won’t get in the HOF based on the very high stats threshold.
    But…A-Rod, Sosa, Macguire, Bonds, etc had stats pasts the moon (stat wise clearly deserving of HOF), but lacked baseball integrity(PEDs), weren’t known for hustle and cumulatively didn’t propel their teams to many championships, and those guys are not in the HOF (at least not yet).
    Pedroia had baseball integrity(highly respected by MLB managers/players), unprecedented hustle, and won 3 championships. Over the last 40 years of watching MLB, if I was tasked to pick a starting second baseman, my finalists would be Biggio, Cano, Altuve and Pedroia. And I’d choose Pedroia. Hustle (a gold glove caliber career), play that actually cultivated winning multiple WS, that exceeds past stats. Pete Rose, Pedroia, Bryce Harper, Will Clark, etc stand apart for their epic hustle/determine successful play.
    Ultimately the HOF isn’t the highest award, those with baseball awareness know who were the epic players.

    I think he will but mostly because the next 5 years of HOF candidates are not very strong. These are all the players with higher WAR than him either on the ballot now or coming up
    On ballot:
    A-Rod: 117 - Won't get in
    Beltran: 70
    Manny: 69 - Won't get in
    Utley: 64
    Andruw Jones: 62
    Abreu: 60
    Pettite: 60 - Won't get in
    Buehrle: 59
    By year on ballot:
    Sabathia 2025: 62
    Ichiro 2025: 60
    Kinsler 2025: 54
    Hamels 2026: 59
    Pujols 2028: 101
    Cano 2028: 68 - Won't get in
    Miggy 2029: 67
    Greinke 2029: 77
    Ignoring the people who won't get votes due to steroids that's 12 guys ahead of Pedroia in overall worth, I think it's highly likely that by a decade from now 7-10 of those guys get in, and Pedroia's hardware (3 Rings, MVP, ROY, ASGs etc) and the "he would have gotten in anyway if he were healthy" sympathy will carry him over a couple. Specifically there i think even tho he's got lower war than Kinsler he'll be viewed as better since Kinsler's only ring came from replacing an injured Pedroia. After Utley, (since Cano DQ'd himself) Pedroia and Kinsler are the best 2nd Basemen until Altuve is on the ballot and even he may end up in the same 50-70 WAR range as the others making it not really clear why you'd put one of those guys in and not the others.

      That's a really great look at the future of the HoF ballot and parameterizes things really well. The competition doesn't seem super stiff in the coming years and save for Votto and Longoria if they decide to hang it up I don't see the position player retirees will be deep again next year

    • @just_radical
      @just_radical 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @IntentionalBalk Pedroia is in a way blessed that he is retiring after the steroid era logjam has basically cleared up.
      If he appeared on the ballot in 2012 he gets 2.5 percent of the vote and is one and done.

      @just_radical 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Chck314 they don't keep guys out of the hall of fame just because someone else is more worthy
      Timing matters sadly. The hall has to elect between 1-3 people every year, and is generally allowed like 1 year per decade where they don't elect anyone and even then people complain.
      Why are you bitching about Beltran like he's not in his 2nd year of voting, got 40% and isn't totally going to get in? Yeah they'll vote him in before Pedroia. But 2033 is gonna roll around and the voters are gonna be like "well ain't that many dudes better than Pedey we can actually vote for guess it's his turn"
      Edmonds is on a completely different ballot now that gas no effect on Dustin or anyone else on the BBWA. The BBWA isn't gonna stop voting for guys potentially less good than Jim just because he debuted at the worst time on the ballot (finished 20th place behind eleven future hofers, curt schilling, Barry bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Gary sheffield, Jeff Kent, and Billy wagner). Sucks for him, he never had a fair chance but that has ZERO impact on anyone else's chances on the ballot now.
      Once the modern era committee puts Sweet Lou in maybe they'll start talking about Edmonds next. But that's an entirely different set of guys to measure Edmonds against now (Dwight Evans, the steroid boys, Tommy John, Rick Reuschel).

    • @Chck314
      @Chck314 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Jim Edmonds is the biggest snub, .903 OPS, 8 GG, almost 400 HRs, I wouldn't even bring Pedroia's name up in HoF debates, he falls so far short

    My favourite player of all time but I don't think he will quite get in. He's a legend, but I don't think the voters will see him as that. He played only 11 seasons and didn't get to that ever important 2000 hit mark. If he'd managed to play another couple of years of regular appearances and bumped those total numbers to 13/14 seasons with 2000 hits, possibly. On paper though he just looks very good, but not legendary. We'll see though. I really hope he gets in, but I'm not holding my breath.

      Not a chance. His numbers are not where they need to be and it's hard for someone from this era that doesn't have great power numbers. Most small ball players accumulate alot hits, runs, steals and need atleast 2,500 hits just be considered.

      Hits aren't the only factor to consider when evaluating a hall of fame player. According to baseball reference, Pedroia has the 19th highest war all time from a second basemen. So you could argue that he's a top 20 all time 2nd basemen and if you ask me that's hall of fame worthy. He was a crucial part of 2 world series, an MVP, ROTY, 4 gold gloves, some all star appearances, and just an all around awesome dude who is very well respected by MLB. He definitely has an outside chance of getting in, but crazier things have happened.
