Hey Todd. Thank you for sharing. I am based in the Caribbean and I have a great Christmas song but I'm late. However, I will go ahead and release domestically and shoot to be earlier next year. Thanks
Wow! I wish I would have seen this a year ago! EXCELLENT post! I have quite a few Christmas songs accumulated over the years. They are performed mainly by "ghost singers". All are decently produced and range in different genres. Question: Does the method you describe above work with writer/producers? Or, does a release have to be artist-centric?
Thanks @jmack84 In terms of music distribution on Spotify, Apple, TH-cam, etc., the method I described would pertain to releasing a master audio recording through distribution. So you if you wanted to do this for yourself, you would need to be the master sound recording owner and probably become an Artist (Performer). If you don't own the master and don't want to be an Artist, and some other artist is using your composition, then you can pass this on to them or whoever is releasing their recordings to music services. If you are talking about sync, then you have just as much to gain as the master owner. So you are incentivized to work equally as hard at pitching for sync as the master owner.
Hey Todd, great video and appreciate the insight. You mentioned posting a link to a database to search song in public domain, but I don't see it. Could you provide that? I need to find out about a holiday song i have.
Hey Todd, I appreciate the info you are sharing, and will certainly apply it to our new holiday recording. Questions, base on response from our music peeps, we have an outstanding and awesome winter holiday song, that was just masterd and want to know are there still sync opportunities in September?
Hey Domingo, no problem. For film and TV shows, they have long lead times for production, so in September and October there will probably be fewer sync opportunities, but still there are some. This is the time when they might be finishing the productions and music is one of the last things they finalize. So in that regard, Sept/Oct could be when they are doing the actual licensing and finalizing tracks. And if they can't get their #1 choice they look for replacement tracks. So if you have somebody that does sync for you, or you have your own list of music supervisors and agencies, then now is a good time to send them your track. For short lead video (advertisements, TH-cam videos, mobile ads), you can keep looking for sync opportunities all the way into early December. Hope that helps. Todd
I have a question… when looking for a PR company to do press for a holiday album, is there a company you would recommend that does holiday/Christmas better ?
I'm just wondering if releasing my Christmas album in March will mean nobody will listen to it, and get lost in the shuffle of other Christmas albums by November because it's several months old. This distribution service I'm trying out won't let me choose a custom release date.
I would change your distribution plan level to one that allows you to choose a release date. Don't release Christmas music in March. If you're serious about promoting your music, you need a distribution plan that allows you to release music on dates that you can control. I find it shocking that distributors even have an option to "throw" your music out there at a random time.

No problem. Give it your best go with streaming services, TH-cam, and maybe there is still time for in store play.

@@BandBuilderAcademy Hi Todd, question, would you consider pitching our song for percentage of the sync fee?
I have a question… when looking for a PR company to do press for a holiday album, is there a company you would recommend that does holiday/Christmas better ?
Hey Chris, sorry man I don't know any holiday PR specialists. Most of the time I was utilizing in-house PR at labels.
