I think this funeral cost mutualization is a great thing. It helps keeping strong links between the members of a community.
My Thai friend tells me it was not enough to pay for the funerals of her mother, but it helped.

  • @villagefarang

In our area, every village is different. Some collect on a per-family basis, but in our village, it is 50 baht per person in the family. Typically, the family hosting the funeral will get somewhere around 60,000 baht from the village donation. Occasionally, we will have more than one funeral in a week, and that expense adds up for the locals. On top of that, people help out with setting things up and cooking. Every night, several people are assigned to stay with the corpse all night, but if you don’t want to do that, you can hire someone to go in your place.
Though it varies, funerals here usually last around five days. There is a preparation day, three days when the monks come to chant in the evening, and then the cremation and cleanup. I sometimes wonder how they ever get anything done with all the ceremonies they are obligated to attend.

Glad to see you are feeling better again! I guess the trick with depression is to stubbornly try to remember that it will always pass, and the joy of life, once out of it, is worth every second of it (and never make any important decisions during an episode!). Plenty of ladies lazying about in hammocks over here - including my wife, her mother and her aunts!

I like how u explained all of those village experiences.....Im in Buriram, and in the village and there are no words how hot it is in the summer for the men who normally do the cow, or buffaloe stuff......their skin is so black from it....and the money for the people who die is a good thing i think...i know my gf appreciated the extra money to pay for the ceremony and all that stuff when it happened to us....

In our village in Pattani Thailand we do it very differently we go to about 6 funerals a month and when we go they always offer food and have a list of all us villages and we all check in and donate 100 baht each funeral and get checked on the list. The money pays for the funeral the family makes the food and often give a gift after we pay respects at the cremation during covid the gift was a more expensive mask but often a plate or cup for everyone who pays respect but we turn the gift down often so the gifts will streach out. And our village uses LINE to keep up on news like funerals and garbage man not coming this week.

Do people in rural Thailand use rainwater collection systems? I was a bit surprised to hear that the village has problems with water. It certainly seems to rain enough to make rainwater collection a practical solution, and such systems do not need to be expensive.

If you have lead/acid batteries you should not be running it for 3 days before charging, you should always keep it topped up daily or you will shorten the life of the batteries, unlike lithium batteries.

Like the channel and interesting how Thai people come together.
Many families don't have much money but have great love for each other.
Have seen older Thai women in a hammock but not so common.
Thai women work hard for family as do the men.
The older generation work hard but the younger generation do not have the same work ethic.
The younger generation want everything now and sadly they get themselves into the alcohol, ice and yabba.
    Seen it too much.
As for Thai men in hammocks not so much because the older guys are working but the young guys are on their phone constantly.

Another interesting video. The community attitude of contributing to a fund to help with fellow village's funeral costs is fantastic. Any idea of what the average cost of a funeral in a village might be? I can't remember if it was mentioned in the vlog.
That spot at the edge of the lake for watching a sunset is beautiful. Ss a hobby photographer, I'd love it there. I know a guy who has a spot like that where he takes beautiful sunset or sunrise photos quite often, with the setting or rising sun reflecting in the water. When I get to retire in Thailand, I think that one of my favourite spots for this would be a well known, large lake in Nakhon Sawan. Keep safe and stay healthy.

In the village where I have lived for more than 20 years the cost of a funeral is about 180,000 baht......a lot of money for people earning 500 baht a day. ..... about a year's salary. The funeral fund covers about100,000 of that.
We pay 225 baht per funeral......last year approx 20 deaths.....ie 4,500 or so a year.
Funerals are a real financial burden but there is no way they will be made less extravagant and expensive in the future.

Great video again Damo... to me the local Monks at Temple should pay for funerals. The villagers give money and food their whole life to the monks, so the perfect time for the Monks to give back would be when one of their disciples has passed. The shared funeral fund is a good thing for village people supporting other members of the village ...never heard of this before/ For Ryan, do not believe i have seen a Thai woman in a hammock either. Her parents are the village drunks, everyday and night, always fighting, no job, searching the jungle and rice fields for any fish, animal or insect to eat, and of course always at our door begging for money or food,,They didnt have any money for their ladyboys funeral, except my wifes help and the village households who give 100bt each..it to pay the monks, provide food at the three day cremation event, the coffin and pickup truck to move it on and other sundies..Back in my home country I live in a village, but no one gives money like this, ,Even the motorbike seller the ladyboy both the bike off, paid up money, and the hospital also..and even though the family always had arguments with the drunk parents all the time, even confrontation with machetes, they all helped at the funeral..Now the parents will drink the motorbike / hospital money away, but that is thailand

My ex Thai girlfriend and her mother at about midday they would have a sleep in there hammocks especially when its April.
The reason why the broke was because of the design all it took rubber pads to stop the shake it looks a sturdy vehicle its a great run around.
As for a funeral I think it's a great idea especially if the man or woman dies without any family which must happen, it is community spirit or as I say good karma for everyone.
I have been to a veterans funeral who didn't have any family he died in his sleep, he would have been put in a pauper's grave buried with a plain cross with his name on it but the veterans centre stepped in he had a full veterans funeral his regimental flag draped over the coffin and standard bearers and veterans lining up with there beret, regimental cap badges and medals stand to attention escorting him to his grave and we collected enough money for a headstone 🪦 with his name rank and number on it with the words "lest we forget" on it as a symbol of respect to a fallen soldier.

They probably can't get in the hammock because the men are already in them lol

You didn't ask your wife " when a woman relaxes, why the bed frame but not the hammock " there must be a cultural reason, love to know the answer??????????

It is funny that women run hide before they 'put their face on'. Do they think we think they have lips and eyes like that naturally?

@goshawkish sounds like you heard something Ryan said, then tuned out for his words that followed also to what Damo said just after that. Maybe play the video again, when you're not tired or distracted if that was the case.

This happens alot Colin, "usually its Thai guys in hammocks this time of day after working in the rice fields in the early mornings" gets heard as "all Thai guys sitting in hammocks are lazy" haha
