Hello , Acron (Άκρον ) means edge , Polis (Πόλις) means city and is is also where the word police in every language comes from . Also the word Metro (the underground) it’s short from the word Metropolis which derives from the Greek word mitropolis (Μητρόπολις) and it means mother city . The athletic brand Nike comes from the name of Athena Nike ( Αθηνά Νίκη = victorious Athina ) and the sign comes from the wing of one of the goddess’s statue , most probably the one that was found in Samothraki , although it’s being said that it was drowned because the employee who designed it saw the goddess in her sleep . If I may , I would suggest that one day you would visit the small but very interesting museum of "Ancient Greek technology" in Kolonaki ( the "fancy" area of the center of Athens and where you could easily have your coffee-drinks or lunch later on . Thank you for another great blog, really they are all fun to watch , God bless .
Thank you so much for all this information, very interesting😃 and thank you for the tip to visit the museum in Kolonaki! We have to check that out😊❤️🇬🇷 Καλό βράδυ
Ladies if Perikles was alive he would have been thrilled to have Athenians, like you. It's a very hot March. If the weather remains like this, next weekend I will dive, for the first time in 2023. Regards from Milos. P.S Nike = Victory
Hello ladies and greetings from sunny Cyprus . Please be aware that Acropolis is the area and the Parthenon is what you are going to see . Parthenon actually means virgin building which used to house the goddess Athena .
Hello girls!!! I like your videos so much, you make my day every time!!! I like your energy and your love about food..you must be Greeks i think... keep the good work, you offer more than you know!!! I hope some day you visit my home city, Kavala! I love you both have a nice life ❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Yes you are right the name of Nike athletic brand was inspired by the ancient Greek statue of Nike. That statue has wings so he was inspired by the movement of the wings just like the athletic shoes move
You can ask also for some toppings on fries.. The simple one is kefalotyri (or hard cheese) and oregano... or soutzoukakia sauce. Or cheddar sauce.. or smoked paprika sauce.. which of course are ton so traditional Greek ones but who cares..
It is very possible! Yes, it is very possible that one of the most recognizable Logos around the world is inspired by the Victory of Samothrace and we will explain why. The Nike logo was created in 1971 by graphic designer Caroline Davidson at the request of Phil Knight, who had decided at the time to create his own line of running shoes for runners. Caroline had even been paid a paltry $35 for her creation, which - in the meantime - had not initially excited the founder of the current giant, but was more a solution of necessity. Today, the Nike logo is known as the Swoosh (meaning the sound caused by the blowing of the wind or the flow of water) and all theories converge on the fact that the main source of its origin is the famous Nike of Samothrace, but there is no official statement about it from the company's founder or the graphic designer. However, it is a given that the name NIKE is the Latin translation of the Greek name Niki and comes from the ancient Greek deity of the same name, since Phil Knight was a lover of ancient Greek culture. And since the best-known representation of the goddess Nike in the world is the statue on display at the Louvre Museum, which comes from the island of Evros, all converge on the Swoosh being related to the world-famous sculpture. However, in ancient Greece, the goddess Nike was always represented with wings, with the exception of Atero Nike, which was placed in the Parthenon temple in Athens, and this was because the Athenians believed that since they had represented her without wings, Nike would never leave their city. For the record, it should be said that Nike eventually reinstated graphic designer Davidson, later when the company was now well established in the global marketplace.
That's right.. Poly is much.. but polis (in contemporary Greek is poli / πόλη) means city.. You can sea this in other cities in the world with Greek names.. Tripoli , Napoli (from Neapolis), Anapolis (in US), Antipolis (in France) etc
