🙂🙂🙂 Jo Ann always knew how to share joy to the max and beyond. God bless you dearly, Jo Ann. Thank you to Grant for posting this video and keeping it active. 🙂🙂🙂
My dad could not wait for her to come on Lawrence Welk Show... and he would holler for me to come in and watch it with him... and this song You Are My Sunshine is what I would sing to my little baby daughter a lot... in 1992 LOL love Joann Castle--
I remember watching before re-runs. My mother, an accomplished pianist, would be glued to the TV, when she played. Joanne had so much fun behind those keys! ❤❤❤
I hit like, before she started playing! This was one of my late Mom's favorite songs. And she would not miss a Saturday night of the show, for anything!
So I took a little stroll to the Red Dog saloon. Prettiest tune I had heard in two years,, it was fair headed Jo who was playing so sweet, please don’t take my sunshine away. They don’t get much more adorable than that. And Honey when get done playing cook us up one of your fabulous meals. Thanks ❤️ Love.
"Ach du lieber, mein schatz"! Watched Lawrence with my family as a teenager in the 1950's every Saturday night. Great intertainment!!! Outstanding musicians!! Here Jo Ann is at her most beautiful! Young people today don't know fine music & great musiciansfrom fat meat!!!
I think this one may have been pre-recorded. The last glissando is played up the keyboard but the hands come down. I know they used two pianos, one with strings for "live" and one without when they pre-recorded the music.
Rob Hoffman It's funny you say that becuz everything on Lawrence Welk was pre-recorded so they could do it all in one take so of course it was pre-recorded. Absolutely right which is why she can do it in one take. Good call.
I think she might be "finger syncing" in this one. Notice on the glissando at 2:00, her fingers go down but notes in the music go up. I'm a huge fan btw, just noticed this, so it was likely pre-recorded.
Love that bass line ! I remember Her when this show was broadcast originally. We never missed the program when I was young. My Mother and Father danced many many times to the LW band in person when He played the Minneapolis area.. I think it was the Marigold Ballroom that was downtown at the time. Wonderful memories. kevlutu
There's something weird here. Look at the last few seconds. She does a glissando DOWN from HIGH to MID or low. But the audio depicts middle UP to high range (appears to be roughly 3 octaves). We often see bootlegged footage that is flipped when posted but she's clearly playing standard "left hand, bass clef, right hand treble." Comments / insight welcome. 😊
Although far from all, a surprising number of performances on the Lawrence Welk show had audio dubbed in for broadcast. Many musicians always performed live as far as I know - Myron Floren, Joe Feeney, Guy Hovis, Ralna English to name a few. But others, most notably Norma Zimmer and Lawrence "Bullfrog" Hooper, always lip-synched. Here it's pretty plain that we're seeing Jo Ann play one thing while we're hearing something else!
@@GrantLewisso how exactly does the music get flipped? I did notice when she ran her thumb from left to right in the middle of the song there was no sound to it…was it prerecorded backwards or something ?
@@davidrobbio9816 it’s not that it’s “flipped” - it’s that they record the music first, and then that recording is played back while making a video recording of the musician performing. The two takes, one audio and one video, are then stitched together to make the final version. The objective is to get the best musical performance married to the best visual performance. They didn’t quite achieve that here!
Love to watch and hear her play that piano! She also reminds me a whole lot of: Dusty Springfield, looks wise that is! Thank you for uploading and sharing!!!
She was the best part of the show back then. The one thing JoAnn DID'NT need was background help from a banjo or bass guitar. She did fine without anyone else getting involved with the number.
She definitely was born with magnificent gifts from God
I wish everyone could have a picture of her when they wake up because that smile brightens your whole day that is a picture of sunshine right there

She has music flowing through her veins.! Incredible! Beautiful

I remember watching her when I was a young boy, fascinated by her fingers flying across the keyboard in that boogie woogie style!
She was so talented on that piano!! Loved her ! She was so pretty too! She was the best part of the Lawrence Welk show!!
Jo Ann was a force of nature. You go girl.
Beautiful lady her smile is contagious
Now that girl could tickle those ivories when playing the piano and had such energy and was also beautiful. 👍
Loved her watched Lawrence Welk as kids she was fabulous ❤
She truly is the best.
Keep in mind a large part of Welk's audience was the WWI generation. My grandparent's generation, born in the 1890s. They loved these kinds songs.
Such talent! Such happiness, joy, and energy! Jo-Ann was a delight to hear and watch.
no one ever played the rag-time piano better!
This was one of my Dad's favorite songs it was sang at his funeral
@@markprtt6238 RIP ur dad

Beautiful smile & great music.
SHE IS A MASTER.
Just as good as Del Wood
One of the best for sure

Charles Green So true!
My grand pop had a huge crush on her 😊
@@michaelmorpheusfinley4327 Ditto.
My parents watch reruns on LW until they went to heaven !!!
Too bad she was a drunken husband beater.
Such wonderful memories and a better time in life !! No shootings, no terrorists , no worries !!!
She sure could make a keyboard smoke - pure talent.
Smokey Bear should be on hand if the piano goes up in smoke.
That was so good! Loved it! Some people are commenting on her beautiful and warm smile- I agree ☝️
Phenomenal lady!!!
She was really talented to have do this all in one take! Amazing.

I'm sure she could do it one take anyway. This band went on the road all the time.

my all time favorite of the LW show
What a sweet lady. I wish I could give her a nice hug.
a studio version with added applause!
Now that playing will make me smile and forget troubles for a while. Thanks 😊
With this talent she could have easily won a Miss America pageant.
2:00 She moves her hand to the left (high notes to low notes), but the scale sounds from low notes to high notes.
@Penguin 101 The recording image is flipped
Yes, I noticed that also, thanks for commenting! I guess it is prerecorded after all...🎶
They prerecorded many of the performances on Lawrence Welk.
She also does a slide at 0:56 that isn't in the recording :\

What a great memory!
Can’t beat that!
She could really hammer those keys and not even look at them,
she was too busy workin the crowd and the camera :)
@@grantnoroyan9275 --well, Liberace did the same thing when he played. Both pianists demonstrated great enjoyment and fun when they played.
The Hendrix of the Lawrence Welk show.
Beautiful!! Love her & that song!
I just love watching and listening to her play
I love the look on the banjo player's face at 1:13 "She's going to go for it!" And she sure did.
Neil Levang, also a very good musician!
My mother loved her. We saw her perform at the old Greentree Mall in Pittsburgh. Great performer, great video.
With my lack of musical talent I find this amazing.
I thought I was talented until I watched this.
Absolute wicked right hand ... she has.
es una total maestra del piano no tiene igual.ademas ese carisma y su sonrisa la hacen unica.
Amazing piano player
When I was a kid, I got to see her perform twice. My piano teacher that Castle was a horror!
Oh man, that's awful! Jo Ann was wonderful as a ragtime pianist!
ADORABLE
That lady can play the piano ! 🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹

I play this song for my mom and played it for my late father. 🎹

Wow
I love you josnn
Welk asked her to join his show the night on air of her 19th birthday
It was 20th birthday, not her 19th.
Just think, all that music is stored up just waiting for someone to find
This is superhuman. She's bouncing around in C Major (all white keys) and never even looks at the keyboard!
Wow

Лучше не бывает !!!
In the UK, we were introduced to Mr Welk via SNL so our view is somewhat skewed 😊
Look at the camera, look at the camera, look at the camera ... :)
Hello
This song was in annabelle creation
WAIT!!! What the Hell? The last glissando went in the WRONG direction. No matter. Still love her!! But....What????
How did that happen?
That’s a million dollar smile wow can she play she’s got jerry lee Lewis beat
Parece la bandera Argentina lo que está pintado en el piano!!!
La pianiste a-t-elle toutes ses facultés ?
sunshine is in what key? thanks

MAGIK
She seems to like to play song fast
How many pianists did they have? They sure painted the hell out of them! Different color scheme every week.
You mean "pianos?" You don't paint pianists.
@@ApartmentKing66 I thought he was making a comment about her make-up at first. 😂
I believe they had two in the color years. One with strings and one without. They pre-recorded her the weeks they used the piano without strings.
No muestra como aprieta los pedales con los tacos altos.
She looks possessed!
Hello doofuss!
It's scary that she's smiling too much
@@dogctor If anything it's the Sun on the piano that's scary.
Amazing talent.......but she always looks at the camera and the audience with an expression that seems to say, "aint I somethin'?" A bit annoying.
It's like she sold her soul to the devil
Hello doofuss!
Is it me, or is that piano out of tune?
It's tuned special for that sound. One string is intentionally detuned out of the three in the triads.
am I the only one that thinks she looks like a pudgy Paris Hilton?
