An incredibly solid effort on the ST. It took an Amiga programmer to finally make a great run jump and shoot on my favorite 16 bit multi-purpose computer.

Absolutely right, the ST is so much more than only a gaming machine. Many people don´t understand that! That was the main reason for me to buy it.

Amiga has the best scrolling (super smooth!) and music.

sorry, but the sega has much smoother and faster scrolling then Amiga. And the music is a tradeoff for more sound effects, its the Amiga audio system limit for 4 sampled sounds and missing synthesizer.

Commodore comes out on top in both 8bit and 16bit... as it should be :D

CPC version look better. But is terribly slow.C64 version is best,ZX worst between 8bit machines.

Played a lot back in the days and still playing Turrican in 2022 on my still working ST. It's just a fantastic and funny game to play with amazing graphics and sound. Ok Amiga had a better in-game sound quality, but intro, score and end game music were digitized and nearly identical to the amiga ones, thanks to Mr. Mad Max Hippel skills. Megadrive version sounds awful IMHO.

Now after I made this video, I realised how terrible this effect is, when the music stops in the ST Version. Before I made this video It was not such an issue :D However, apart from this the ST Version is great, specially the intro which is very close to the amiga version (except no stereo and slightly less clean samples maybe).

    1. Amiga
    2. Megadrive
    3. Atari ST
    4. Turbografx-16
    5. Commodore 64
    6. Amstrad CPC
    5. Gameboy
    7. ZX Spectrum
Adding that, the Gameboy version isn't a Turrican game because the main character doesn't look like Turrican. The good thing that he's not Mario! :)
In the Spectrum version, it is ridiculous how Turrican crouches down when he uses the lightning beam weapon. Also the sound effects. :)

I remember people in the 80's always said the ST had better sound than the Amiga (because of MIDI support built in) - they lied

It was not really a lie, but Midi is only working if you have connected a midi keyboard or synthie for example. In this case the music will come out of the midi instument. But what you hear in this video is the normal chiptune from the intern Yamaha soundchip. If you compare only the soundchips of Amiga and ST, the Amiga is the better one without a doubt. However, the St Soundchip is quite underrated. If used correct, It can produce very nice Music.

the 16 bit version all pretty much look the same. C64 version wins the 8bits easily though.

Of course, the c64 version is the only playable 8bit version.
