Willys Jeeps made in India! 75 years of Mahindra Jeeps CJ 3b to the Thar

The Mahindra brothers of India acquired the license to build Willys Jeeps in 1947 and began assembling completely knocked-down CJ-3B Jeeps imported from the US. Since then, Mahindra has made Jeeps under agreements with every one of the many companies that have owned the Jeep brand. That’s nearly 75 years of making Jeeps!
Today Mahindra is the largest manufacturer of four wheel drive vehicles in the world, with a production of over 150,000 units annually. So, lets take a look at Mahindra Jeeps over the years.

The Mahindra Jeep was on sale in Canberra, A.C.T., Australia, about 30 years ago. Myself & a friend took one for a test drive & the salesman pointed out an offroad area where we could really test it out. It rode well & handling was OK. Off road ability was pretty bloody good! A bit sluggish but OK for such an open car. We liked it & I was interested until we opened the bonnet & looked at the chassis. The fit & finish was deplorable! Jagged edges & RUST!!!!! It looked like it was shipped over as deck cargo on a submarine. I didn't buy one, thankfully & noticed that the few around quickly developed sagging springs. Dodged a bullet there. They all disappeared fairly quickly.

Cj4a was launched in 1968 which my father bought in the same year it is still with us with diesel engine lnstalled in 1993

I saw a Mahindra Jeep at our state fair, offered as a farm vehicle, not approved for public roads. Too bad.

Can one buy and import into USA?

As far as I know you can buy a Mahindra Roxor, kind of a mini jeep diesel, but they are considered an ATV/not road legal.

Why aren’t these more available in the USA. Probably because people would buy these over the soccer mom Chrysler made jeeps

Now they are copying it and putting their name instead. Dirty ways. They are been sued as Jeep copycats.
