Now, the temp is going to stick in the 60F, I’m expecting more to come! Thank you for sharing your tips. I started out germinating with just a damp paper towel and I saw most seeds start to sprout. I watered it before work but when I returned home from work the paper towel, seeds and sprouts dried out. I was unsure if they would grow any more but I dampened it all again in hopes they would continue and grow again and it worked. But went to work as usual and same thing happened. Now I am unsure if they will grow! I planted what I saw sprouted and will wait. I am hoping to try this method to keep more moisture and grow spinach and micro greens!
This is a great idea. My rosemary and sage seeds never germinated, so I will try more seeds using this method. Thank you for creating and sharing your knowledge! It is appreciated!
Rosemary is hard to germinate and it is easier if you propagate it from a plant. Buy some rosemary from the store and strip the lower bottom and make a fresh cut and stick it in water until you see roots.
Barbara Dumler I’m a beginner gardener. Would this be a like a pack of rosemary fresh stems in the produce section of a grocery store, or buy a rosemary plant from a fast den center? Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
@@linzraz9834 I've done both. If you know someone who has it in their garden, I'm sure they wouldn't mind taking several stems. I did this last year and gave several away to the neighbors since I didn't have any more room left to plant anything. I also watch Mike Kincade on you tube who does a lot of propagating. I'm doing petunias right now. It's addicting so watch out. Some success and some failures. That's how we learn.
Outstanding video. I like how you show step by step in the germination process. I didn’t know how each 1 of those seeds is one individual plant. You taught me a lot. Keep up the good work. First time planter.👍
just bought a cabin on about 7 wooded acres up against state land this past July and had some "cleaning" to do since the previous owner really wasn't able ( elderly ) to get out in the woodline very much. We rushed out and bought raised beds when it was still thick with snow here and now we are kind of rushing to get some seeds germinating ( yes I went and bought every vegetable and herb I knew we would use ). I remember my grandmother use to just use paper towels and set it in her window sill but the baggie makes sense. Who am I to question a free greenhouse. We started the homesteading lifestyle simply because we just need to step backwards and get back to basics ( i.e. stop eating garbage ). At least this way we know exactly what is in our kids' food.
hi I like the way you germinate the seeds my question is can I do that with the outside of a real Strawberry in a Ziploc bag ??? ^~^ just to see what might happen Thank you have a great 🧓🐟♎🕊️🍒on top
I'm not sure I understand the question, do you want to germinate strawberries from the seeds on the berries you have? If that's the case, then for sure. Give it a go!
Very good video, I am watching for do my biology lab in home, I have a question, when I put my seed in the plastic bag, I have to add water in the next days or just the first day?
If the paper towel is damp enough, the should be all the water you need to germinate the seed. Iv never had to add water. Great question and thanks for commenting!
I already have carrot seeds that I germinated in a baggy. I see the sprouts after 5 days. I need to know when and how to plant the sprouts in soil in a pot.
one article I read said to store ziplocked seeds in a cool place with out direct sunlight, like on top of the fidge and they came out spindly. I swear some of these garderner advice columnists want you to fail! so now the new ziplocked seeds ar ein window. thanks man.
It doesn’t make sense to put it in a cool place then proceed to place it on top of the fridge ( which is a warm place). I put my bag on top of a heat mat and domed tray. Mat is s $15 investment and well worth it. Most of the seeds germinate in 3-5 days at 83-85 degrees.
Courtney...they don't want you to fail they're only showing you what methods work best. You have to take into acct how much attention you pay to the seeds elevation, the types of seeds....there's many things that go into this....allot of times they had allot of failures also and they don't show those they show you what succeeded and that's what method they use now. 🙂 Keep trying until you find what works where you live that's what nature does too
You can just leave the bag in the window? No need to re-wet the paper towel after a few days? It’ll stay moist right? I’m so excited to try your method and your tray cups are brilliant!!
Thank Niki, yes I dont ever reopen the bag. Iv never had a problem with it drying out. Always stays moist, its like a mini greenhouse. Good luck and thanks for the question.
@@joeythegent3888 good news and bad news. The seeds I had were too old to germinate. So the golden cayenne failed. However, I did grow some tomato plants using this method. They are really taking off now.

Just one sprouted seed per cup? And do you move them into a bigger container to get slightly bigger before the ground or right into the ground after they’ve sprouted in these paper cups? Can’t wait to plant my window hanging seedlings tonight!
Do you have to close the ziplock bag? I have mine on a heat mat in an unheated garage under grow lights. I did everything you did in the video but I didn’t ziplock the bag, I just laid it closed.
Hi awesome video I did some chilli peppers and in a few days I got all germinated, can I do it with rose seeds,I'm from the Caribbean so the weather is different Thanks a mil
I tried this method for my tomato and eggplant seeds 4 days ago, and I already see some roots! would it be alright to plant the seedlings into soil less potting mix in a seedling tray once they’ve germinated?
Just curious...would it help the seeds to germinate more quickly if they were soaked in barely warm water for 8 hours, then put in baggies on damp paper towels? I have no idea and wondered if someone on here or yourself could give an educated answer. Thanks. Super towel/baggy method. Gonna do it.
So I'm wondering can you just plant the whole paper towel? Would it still grow? Paper towel should break down. I'm asking because I have tomato seeds that are stuck on the paper towel and i just stuck the whole thing in a baggie. Last year seeds i forgot about. Not really counting on them doing anything but you never know
Great video! Good tip about not getting it soaking wet. I'm getting confused about the lighting though. Some say to put in a south facing window for light and some people say to put it in a dark place. Which is it?
Its heat, dark warm place or in a sunny window. Iv never tried the dark warm place before, maybe I will. Remember when you plant a seed in the ground, it's the heat of the sun that draws it up.
I know every seed is different. But what happens when my seeds grow pretty quick. With long green roots and there is mold all over the paper towel and roots? I let green bean seeds sit and watched them daily. About a week later I went to transfer and there was fuzzy mold all over the roots and it did smell bad which has not happened with any other seed I’ve done since I started a few months ago. So I threw it away and did another batch. That I’m working on now. Mold wasn’t too bad but it was definitely all over most the roots that grew out. There aren’t many videos that talk about this. And I’ve been searching for days to figure out what to do and what not to do.
If you’re willing to email me about it if the response is too long for TH-cam. Just let me know. I can’t find any information I’m looking for. Even a simple google search only redirects me to learning about how to germinate seeds. So it’s highly stressing me out.
@@TrippyyDripp don't worry about the mold, I get it sometimes as well. Just plant the seeds in soil once you get roots and you should be fine. Try rinsing your seeds a little before you put them in the paper towel and make sure you got lots of sunshine! hope it all works out for you!
Thanks for sharing your method. so, your video was the first one i watched that didn't put me to sleep. I LOVE seeing the clothes flapping in the breeze on the clothesline too!! Anyway, this is my first time tying this. People have told me to spritz seeds in paper towels with a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Can that be done and if yes, why don't you do that? Also, when you put your seeds in the ground do you just set them in the toilet paper cups you made, or take them out? I hope you see this and answer my questions!!! It looks so lovely where you moved to, Good for you!!!

I haven't had to as of yet, I make sure the towel is wet but not dripping before I place it in the bag. I have never had to open it, not till it's time to plant.
I cannot believe I didn’t think of this method. Thank you. I learned this is grade school with beans and I don’t get why I didn’t apply it. Again thank you for this upload haha
Most seed doesn't like light to sprout. Yet it seems to work. A black sheet around the bags might speed the process up. I set my warmth loving seeds (like tomato) on the stb (TV decoder, modem will also do) they germinated in a day this time!
Thank you sir! Will be trying this out tomorrow with my fig seeds. I just got into planting recently so I don't know much. Even though this looks super simple I still worry i might mess it up. I will give it a try and cross my fingers!
@@WELSBYROOTS same here. I also think it's better to leave them in the window so they can have sunlight during the day and rest at night. Then when you transfer them to the garden they won't get burnt from the sun or stressed out from the change
I've always heard light isn't necessary for seed germination (in fact dark is supposedly important). Though it does seem cool to see them grow this way
It's more about temperature than light - heat from the sun or another source kick starts germination. In some specific cases seeds may need darkness, but you'd have to check which. From what I can tell vegetables need light, but flowers do better in the dark. Just depends.

I did this with my pumpkin plants. All six of them are seedlings now.
Doesn’t the seeds need air circulation?
Nope, its perfectly fine.
Hope it works out for you, good luck!
And thanks for commenting!
Hi Dave, I am about to try to germinate some kale, tomatoes and chili peppers! Thanks for the ideas, will try it out.
Good luck! You should have alot of success with those seeds!
Outstanding video. I like how you show step by step in the germination process. I didn’t know how each 1 of those seeds is one individual plant. You taught me a lot. Keep up the good work. First time planter.👍
Perfect tutorial on germinating seeds. Thanks for sharing, wish me luck :)
just bought a cabin on about 7 wooded acres up against state land this past July and had some "cleaning" to do since the previous owner really wasn't able ( elderly ) to get out in the woodline very much.
Paper Napkins work great also if your ever out of paper Towels also.
Do you use used toillet paper to save on compost?
hi I like the way you germinate the seeds
my question is can I do that with the outside of a real
Strawberry in a Ziploc bag ??? ^~^ just to see what might happen
Thank you have a great
🧓🐟♎🕊️🍒on top
I'm not sure I understand the question, do you want to germinate strawberries from the seeds on the berries you have? If that's the case, then for sure. Give it a go!
Thanks for the video …does it matter if the seeds are dry or straight from the fruit
I swear some of these garderner advice columnists want you to fail! so now the new ziplocked seeds ar ein window. thanks man.
Well good thing i read this its winter and theres no sun
Glad you found something helpful, thanks for commenting!
@@thomashom7514 On top of your Hot Water Heater works great also etc
Very good video. I'm starting Golden Cayenne today. This is my first time germinating anything. Wish me luck!
Glad you enjoyed this! Thanks for commenting and good luck!
How is it so far?
@@joeythegent3888 good news and bad news. The seeds I had were too old to germinate. So the golden cayenne failed. However, I did grow some tomato plants using this method. They are really taking off now.
@@itsneaparis that's good to hear, I'm literally just starting out, I'm waiting for one of the 4 to germinate, I got 1 in soil outside, 1 inside, and 3 with the paper towel and plate method, I'm trying to order lights, but I'm worried I won't have enough Oxygen to move in and out without my place getting colder
Just one sprouted seed per cup? And do you move them into a bigger container to get slightly bigger before the ground or right into the ground after they’ve sprouted in these paper cups? Can’t wait to plant my window hanging seedlings tonight!
Greetings from South Africa. We live in a very sunny and warm country. Can all the direct sunlight "over heat" the seeds in some cases?
Greeting from Canada! Just make sure the paper towel stays damp. Hope it works out for you and stay safe!
Does this work for any seeds, like cantaloupe?
So far I have had success with every type of seed I have tried. Good luck!
Does it work with big seeds too? I'm trying to grow a royal poinciana using your method. Just put it at the window an hour ago. :)
@@elorarora iv never tried that type of seed, but I hope it works out for ya!
I heard that it's good to open the bag each day to get fresh air in for a few minutes so that it will prevent it from dying.
Thats something you could try, Iv never had to do that. I would also be careful not to dry it out.
Do you have to close the ziplock bag? I have mine on a heat mat in an unheated garage under grow lights. I did everything you did in the video but I didn’t ziplock the bag, I just laid it closed.
Yes keep it closed or it'll dry up the wet paper towel, keeping the paper wet is what helps the seeds germinate.
What is the process if the paper towel has dried out before the germinating process has begun??
I would just open the bag and gently add a little water.
Thank you for sharing sir how many days before sprouting seeds
Hi awesome video I did some chilli peppers and in a few days I got all germinated, can I do it with rose seeds,I'm from the Caribbean so the weather is different
Thanks a mil
I tried this method for my tomato and eggplant seeds 4 days ago, and I already see some roots! would it be alright to plant the seedlings into soil less potting mix in a seedling tray once they’ve germinated?
Ya if they have germinated go ahead and plant them in some seed trays. Glad it worked out for you! Thanks for commenting!
WELSBY ROOTS thanks for replying! your video has helped me a lot. thank you again!
Do you water to the cups before/after you plant?
Just curious...would it help the seeds to germinate more quickly if they were soaked in barely warm water for 8 hours, then put in baggies on damp paper towels? I have no idea and wondered if someone on here or yourself could give an educated answer. Thanks. Super towel/baggy method. Gonna do it.
So I'm wondering can you just plant the whole paper towel? Would it still grow? Paper towel should break down. I'm asking because I have tomato seeds that are stuck on the paper towel and i just stuck the whole thing in a baggie. Last year seeds i forgot about. Not really counting on them doing anything but you never know
Should be fine. Like you siad the paper towel will break down no problem.
@@WELSBYROOTS Thank you!
I germinated lemon seed. I already have them in 1 gallon pots
I did the same thing but the lemon trees attracted so many bugs.
This is awesome, I can’t wait to try this method. I’m new to gardening so this video helped a lot. Thanks!!
I thought you wanted to place the bags in a dark location. Are there exceptions or was I doing it wrong?
No, you want sun exposure, Good luck!
What do you do if you find cotton like webbing in the plastic bags? That’s what I have in my onion seeds that just sprouted today
I wouldn't worry about it, once the seed germinates and ya have a root, get it into soil so it can start to grow.
@@TrippyyDripp don't worry about the mold, I get it sometimes as well. Just plant the seeds in soil once you get roots and you should be fine. Try rinsing your seeds a little before you put them in the paper towel and make sure you got lots of sunshine! hope it all works out for you!
How long did it take for your carrot seeds to germinate?
Thanks for sharing your method. I've germinated my bell peppers and some beans seed few weeks back using the paper towel method but not sticking them on the window and it worked. however, im having a hard time germininating my bittermelon and calamansi (Phil lime) seeds. Maybe too much water on the towel as Ive noticed molding? I will try your method of placing the ziplock on the window. Maybe the sun will have an effect on the seeds. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed this, hope it works out for you and the sun takes care of the mold problem.
@@WELSBYROOTS I hope so too. I'll let you know. Take Care.
I looked up to see if someone else is doing this. I started doing it randomly and it's been very effective yet I don't know what to do after it germinates and it germinates very fast!
Excellent idea taping them to the window!
This is so cool. Are there any seeds that you have found that don't like this method?
Can you tape the bag of seeds to a window that gets direct morning sun or should they be kept out of direct sunlight?
Would it be just as good if I keep my seeds under a grow light or is the window sunlight better?
dosen't really matter, this is just a off grid kind of hack.
so, your video was the first one i watched that didn't put me to sleep.
I haven't heard of using hydrogen peroxide so I cant comment on that. But yes you put the cups into the ground and they will degrade. Thanks for commenting, hope your plants work out!
How often do you water them after you transplant them?
Great video! Going to try this so I can start my veggie garden!
Even with Coronavirus you can still be a farmer. HI i bought 2 pounds of strawberries from a local farmer here in my area they have a trailor in town every season. Smaller in size than usual but i took them home and the first thing i did was take off as many seeds as i could -got 45. and im always saving pepper and apple seeds Macntosh my favorite but they only grow in my state and Michigan and Washington But our s are the best..what soil should i get and where do I get it? Thank You.
Where are you located? Some places you can grow crop over winter ☺️
Those Kale seeds are so cute❤️I use tweezers to pick up strawberry seedlings.
Great tip, thanks for commenting!
Can you put these under a grow light if you don’t live in an area that’s getting a lot of sun? Will they still mold?
I’m germinating lentils and in the first 13 hours, I already see small roots
Awesome!
My seeds started get the green stuff so I transferred it over to a container with the paper towel and next day, they are growing upwards !
Will this work for marijuana seeds
Miguel Ochoa yes
So you wait for it to show green before you remove them? I have alot of them where the roots are just starting to show growth and I can even smell them ! Just not green yet
Do you add any moisture to the bag after the initial spray? and also do you leave the bag open for air circulation. Tia
No problem, glad you enjoyed this and hope it works out for you. Thanks for commenting!
What time of year (in Ontario?) did you germinate all these seeds?
if I remember correctly, it was spring
I use soft tip paint brush to poke in a soil and lift and place delicate seed sprouted into the cups.
Thanks! Great tip!
Most seed doesn't like light to sprout. Yet it seems to work. A black sheet around the bags might speed the process up. I set my warmth loving seeds (like tomato) on the stb (TV decoder, modem will also do) they germinated in a day this time!
How long does it normally take stuff to germinate this way? is it faster than just planting it in the gatrden?
You will have more success this way, and want waste time with duds that aren't going to germinate. Good luck and thanks for commenting.
I’m trying to do lavender seeds and rose seeds
Awesome, hope it works out!
Thank you
Thank you sir! Will be trying this out tomorrow with my fig seeds. I just got into planting recently so I don't know much. Even though this looks super simple I still worry i might mess it up. I will give it a try and cross my fingers!
Welsby Roots, Nice work. How often do you water these guys?
I don't, must make sure the paper towel doesn't dry out before the germinate. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@WELSBYROOTS No water at all when they are in soil?
@@erictir7986 oh no, once you plant it in soil it will need to be watered.
I keep hearing to keep these in a dark place. Have you ever had any complications from the seedlings being in that much light?
No, iv never had a problem.
@@amariahg5450 - Thanks. I just had some pepper plant germination fail on a heat mat using a damp paper towel in a baggie method (used that method many times on other strains), but when put into seedling mix they sprouted just fine. So I guess the medium matters too
Is it also effective with small seeds?
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
Great video. Have you tried very small seeds like basil? Are they easy to pull off the paper to transplant in a cup?
It's hard, just be careful with the roots. Iv done pomegranate and there small seeds.
@@WELSBYROOTS ever seen Tobacco seeds or Mullin seeds. There like freaking dust
Just cut the paper towel and plant them with the towel still attached
excellent supper , I would like to know about coriander seeds , this is possible as you do
And do we have to water them everyday or when it gets dry.
No, the paper towel should be wet enough to last with the ziplock back sealed.
Can this method also be used with very small seeds?
