Gary L. Heilig retired Michigan State University Horticulture Educator discusses 3rd year training (pruning) of an apricot tree
During the 3rd year, you can see that most of the growth is at the top of the tree. Our goal this year is to prune the major branches by removing upward and downward growing wood, dead branches, crossing branches, suckers at the base of the plant, and by making bench cuts to continue to encourage outward growth.
I dont think I have ever been more excited for a video! I was waiting for this all season. Thank you for the video
Thank you! This is the first video that made sense to me, as a novice who planted 2 apricot trees with no idea what I was doing. Mostly I chose apricot trees for nostalgia since I had one when I was a young child, growing up at my parent’s home.
I try to keep it simple. Let me know if you have topics you would like me to cover.
I've been pruning roses for decades, and have shaped orange trees, but this will be my first year with a young apricot and two plums. I see the basic philosophies are the same. I appreciate how detailed you are with explaining your thought process, but also encourage people not to be afraid, and just "do it".
Greetings from California,
Thank you Gary for a new, excellent training/pruning video.
Every time I bring up your channel I think you are better.
Thanks for the emphasis on bud direction, for standing back now and then to inspect the work, and for the details of branches to leave or remove.
This is how I have done it in my business since the '80s.
Sir, you are appreciated.
You are making the best pruning videos I've ever watched. Very informative and detailed! Thanks a lot!
(You've made us curious about the apricot trees blooming or not; please keep us updated.)
This is awesome! I love your clear explanation style, and very to the point information. I learned so much here.
Thank you so much for a very explanatory video! I have a young 3-year-old apricot tree that has many small spindly branches going everywhere off of the main branches. Now I have a good idea of what I need to do.
Only a few more months.... year 4! Such good info and especially since we get to see the tree year after year. A+ Content, sir.
Thank you from Australia! Excellent video.
Gary, As always great video !
Thank you! I was so helpful to listen to your explanation as you pruned.
Of all my fruit trees APRICOT is one I hate to prune, it seems like the more I prune the bigger the tree gets. Also flowers way too early. seems like I'm not getting any apricot fruit like you this year, we surpose to get a couple of inches of snow tonight and the flowers are in full bloom.
Great info on a detailed level. Thanks Gary!
Very informative 👍🏽 Thanks 😊
Thank you sir, much appreciated!
How is this tree doing?!
Thanks
Thank you!!
Nice job
very nice video Dear big brother
A like for the front picture 👍
When will you do year 4?
Hi Gary, do you think we can see a Raspberry update video this summer?
It in my list of thing to video tape. Thanks for watching.
did it fruit?
One question....if the winter was cold are the young trees less likely to fruit? We went down to -26
Look up chill hours needed for your fruit variety. Chill hours are the hours between temps 45°-32°, and any temps below 32° deduct from that number. So if you had too many very cold hours, but not enough per your fruit variety’s required chill hours, they will not set the fruit you want. Does that help?
I cant find year 4
What state and month are you doing this
winter time? I see no leafs.
fine but when is the fruit growing ?
Most of the time fruit starts growing in the spring and keeps doing
so until the end of fall.
