Neline Mondal: This Belgian Lady Is Protecting Heritage In This Small Bengal Town | Durga Puja

About 35 kilometers away from Kolkata on the western bank of the Hooghly River stands the former French Colony of Chandannagar or Chandernagore. A century ago, this town was called Forashdanga which literally means ‘Where the French Live.’ Neline Mondal, a Belgian lady who came to Chandannagar in 1989 on an UNESCO project, fell in love with this place and decided to stay here, she now lives with her husband Ujjwal Mondal. Locals know her as Neline di, who is an unofficial guard of Bengali-French aristocratic 'Bonedi' culture in the area.
