In this engaging podcast episode, Dr. Meenakshi Jain, a renowned Indian historian, returns to discuss her latest book "Vishwanath Rises". Dr. Jain shares the accidental origins of her book, which initially focused on Ayodhya but expanded to cover the Kashi Vishwanath Temple following significant archaeological developments at the Ganvapi site in Varanasi.
The episode delves into the profound historical and spiritual significance of Kashi (Varanasi) in Hindu civilization. Dr. Jain articulates the shift from Vedic rituals to the philosophical discourses that occurred in Eastern India, particularly in Kashi.
Furthermore, Dr. Jain discusses the archaeological findings that substantiate Kashi's ancient religious history, dating back to 8,000 BC. She explores how myths and historical facts intertwine, providing a captivating narrative of Kashi's enduring legacy as a center of learning and spirituality. The podcast not only highlights the historical depths of Kashi but also its continuous influence on Indian culture and spirituality.

Thank you for a panoramic view of Kashi and the long history of this great city. As Meenakshi ji points out, it is to the great credit and foresight of India's ancient Hindu rulers, as well as 18th century rulers like the Marathas, that they undertook great efforts to protect the spiritual, dharmic core of Kashi, despite all the islamic invasions and the desecration of Hindu temples. Meenakshi ji rightly emphasized that their wanton destruction was not just for the wealth of the temples but driven by strong bigotry against sanatana dharma.
The mention of the role of scholars like Narayana Bhatt ( during Mughal ruler, Jalaluddin's time- and let's use their actual names instead of glorified titles) including his descendants (of Narayana Bhatt), to the present day, and their dedication to preserving the spiritual greatness of Kashi and Ayodhya, as well as its Vedic sanatana traditions, was fascinating! That lineage, and the 6 families like them, deserve to be recognized with a Bharat Ratna!
