  • I’ve been commuting to work for a full year now!
I live about an hour out of central Tokyo, in Sagamihara Kanagawa. It takes about 30-minutes to commute the 7miles to work.
When I first started it took over an hour! But I found better routes, got a better bike, and learned more rules of the road.
Today is my last day of work, been riding bike to work entire year, rain, shine or typhoon!
I love biking in Japan, I commuted by bicycle in America too, completely different ball game.
    Japanese Bike Culture:
    * Bikes are utility vehicles, not recreational toys
    * Commute in dress clothes, uniform not shorts and tshirt, but sneakers and flips-flops are no problem even while wearing a tie.
    * Most (95%) riders do not wear helmets, only recreational road cyclists seem too.
    * Bikes are required to have Anti-Theft Registration, can be done at bike-shop for \600 = $4
    * Bikes are required to have lights and a bell.
    * Cannot bring bikes on a train unless in a specific bicycle bag.
    * No drunk riding
    * Many paid bicycle parking areas especially near train stations
    * Commuters ride through rain with rain-gear and sometime one-hand an umbrella.

Man, Japan looks like a dream! I live in rural Texas, it’s almost mandatory to need a car here. A simple trip to the grocery store is 15 miles away and even by car takes a couple hours out of your day if that’s all you do. I was in nyc this past weekend and took my bike. Using the bike, trains, and subways was an amazing experience! If I didn’t have a family, I would definitely move to nyc to commute by bike everywhere

@@Famvestor I stumbled upon your video to watch all the ACL vlogs - got my surgery done a week ago. Still long way to go for recovery. Then as I watched more of your contents I realized you guys are in the FIRE community which made me like your videos even more. I think I have downloaded one of your excel sheets when you shared in ChooseFI facebook page a while ago 🙂 Thanks for sharing your experience

@@einstein1102 oh man, sounds like we are on a similar journey. Unfortunate about the ACL, hope recovery is going well!

@Famvestor so far recovery has been smooth. It just sucks to not be able to play soccer and volleyball for the next year. I'm looking to pick up biking in that time.

Hey man I just watched your ACL video I’m not sure if you comment on it anymore ? Quick question about work , you were working 2 months after , cycling ice packs ? Was this physical or desk / computer work ? I may need the full 4 months as my job is very demanding physically

It was a desk job where I could sit and raise my leg. A demanding job where you are in your feet all day would probably need 4 weeks.

Left knee is about 92% still gets sore after long runs. Not much clicking at all after about the 18 month mark.
