- Every day people ask me about mouthpieces and what they actually could do for their musical performances. My reaction is always the same: you can run better with running shoes, walk better with walking shoes and dance better with dancing shoes.
Here is a quick comparison of my 3 most used mouthpieces. Choose yourself what’s best for you!
And don’t forget to enjoy the journey of searching for your own sound, convenience and musical boundaries in this big Mouthpiece jungle of diversity in brands and sizes.
DENIS WICK 4FL, for all my classical gigs
Lotus 2XL Bronze, for jazz soloing
Bob Reeves 43.5 F for bigband or Horn section
All played on a Antoine Courtois 154 Flugelhorn
(My new Adams F1 Flugelhorn is on its way!!!)

Wick sounds best. Full and warm. 2nd one is ok-ish and the last one makes it almost sound like a trumpet
Agreed. I’m now having second thoughts about purchasing a Lotus XL mouthpiece. I usually play on a Wick and I’d have gone for a Lotus were it more in keeping with my tone, but it is less so than the Wick.
Interesting. Reeves may have kore versatility but definitely agree it sounds more trumpet than flugel
