It's a yellow for me.. Stopping a promising attack. Getting the ball first by the defender is not a thing/excuse, according to the laws of the game. The foul comes from the defender lifting his legs after touching the ball last, so the attacker doesn't get another chance at the ball. It's not a red because the attacker's last touch on the ball was too far in front of him. The law for a red says the ball needs to be under control and close to the body. I don't see that here. However, ever referee or person can interpret the law of game differently based on their experience and positioning on the field.
Overall, the referee on this match gets an F, for awarding a penalty kick decision that showed obvious corruption at worst and showed incompetence for duty at best. There could even be an argument to be made that the referee acted with malice in awarding this penalty and committed an act of referee misconduct himself by doing so! At no point did the player making the tackle on the ball infringe the law by deliberately tripping the opponent in a manner that was careless, reckless, used excessive force or endanger the safety of the opponent. He went for the ball in a completely lawful manner and won the ball cleanly, only for the referee to misjudge the tackle and penalize the player for doing something that never happened. This call was clearly motivated by the referee’s ego rather than applying the law correctly in connection with facts of the match to which he was assigned. It is miscarriages of justice such as this which serve to further erode public trust in referees and their work. And I highly encourage this referee to further educate himself on Law 12 and the FIFA considerations for fouls and misconduct. The players and team against whom this decision was made get an A, because although they were justified in challenging the decision of the referee in relation to this play, they could have taken a more tactful approach to it. I don’t fault the players for reacting so strongly to an egregious miscarriage of justice and potential referee misconduct, the players would be better served to seek justice by appealing the decision to the competition authorities rather than fight it on the field. Although I do not have an update on the ultimate outcome of this decision, it will be interesting to know the results of whatever action the players and team take against this referee. As of yet, the referee is presumably still receiving assignments in this league.
