William DeVaughn is the original writer and singer of “Be Thankful for What You Got”. Curtis Mayfield, in fact, never recorded the song. His “Diamond in the Back” is simply a miscredited version of DeVaughn’s song. The singers have very similar vocal styles, instrumental backings, and lyrical content. Mayfield’s popularity by 1974 quickly caused people to attribute the song to him.
