- A walk around overview of how I got 2 kayaks, 2 bikes, and storage on a tiny 40x48 base trailer. No welds were harmed in the building of this trailer. Everything was bolted together out of stuff in boxes, and some stuff that didn't come in boxes.

What an elegant build. I am a female building my own kayak trailer and your photos and ideas absolutely saved me! I have a 4 ft Harbor Freight trailer which I am adding pvc bunks and super strut to. I could not figure out how to attach the super strut to this smaller trailer for the life of me until I saw your pictures. I am very grateful that you shared your work in such detail. Thank you!!
Thankyou for your kind words. Using Super Strut (SS) L-brackets to attach the SS to the trailer, then using SS U-bolts to attach the PVC to the SS, has worked really well

You doing a lot with a little. Good job. I like the add-on brake light bar on the back. Very smart especially at night. I have a double hitch receiver which gives you your regular opening but also has a 2-in opening welded above it. I can use my regular bike rack plugged in on top
the light may be may favorite feature. I was originally going to use a double receiver and bike rack. But I would have had to make the tongue longer. And then the trailer would not fit in my small storage/shop

Mike, thank you for posting this. It is a great build. The pickup truck ladder racks, extended tongue, and all the other little details really make for a fantastic and well thought out build. I have a similar harbor freight mini trailer that I just use as-is for bulky runs to home depot, or a few mountain bikes to the park. I have a small passenger car. But I have been thinking of adding some features to haul kayaks and use it for camping trips, and your ideas are great.
I had some questions in my mind about stability with the kayaks and storage weight elevated as they are, and reading through the comments others asked the same thing and you gave thoughtful feedback on how it's handled on the road.
Being that I have a small passenger car, I'm never going to be loading it up with a lot of weight, but most of this gear is bulky - not heavy, so even my hatchback car can tow a 450 pound load, and I don't plan to overload anything. I know the limitations of my car and just want to get a kayak and some bikes out to the lake. Thanks again, you've given me the spark to get my project started.

You literally just answered and helped my issue, I am trying to to add a bed rack to a jet ski trailer and was trying to figure out the width issues since my is 42 wide, genius turning the rack beams the opposite way. You the man
Thank you very much for this build. I just got an Ascend 133x for my wife and we have been struggling for transport options. I "built" out a 16' boat trailer to move it around but it is too much trailer for the kayak and my wife. I already have the small trailer (HF version) and this build guide is perfect for me to finish the build
I am going to rebuild the boat trailer for a long haul camping trailer that will house the kayak but to get her to the water the smaller one will be much better.

Thanks! We have really enjoyed this trailer. Whether we pull it to nearby spots or 1,600 miles away, it pulls like its not even there. Look on the channel for my trailer security video, if you want to pull many miles from home, and stay at hotels, motels, or condos. Many nights away, and always came home with everything we left with

Very nicely done! The build photos were great too. I was leaning toward the Harbor Freight trailer kit for our yaks, but seeing yours has me thinking....this kit plus a 10' piece of channel steel and the AA Racks would still be cheaper. Plus, it has a bit more of a compact footprint for storage.
With the compact size, I store my trailer fully loaded in my garage storage area

With a 2 story rack you are not going to get the trailer deep enough to float the top kayak. Besides, I launch at several places with no boat ramps. Thats the beauty of a kayak. So I have never put the trailer in the water

Does it balance well with the cargo up on top on the side? Any issues there?
I have never done anything like this, and have zero metal working skills. But I did do a ton of research on the design. If you can operate a drill and a wrench you can do it.

I used to know that, but I can not remember. I would "assume" most are pretty standard to fit a pick up. I do remember it will go about 4" smaller. And it would go considerably more than that wider than it is, because there is a lot pipe doubled. I don't mind measuring. But I can't do it now and I will probably forget later. 😬 You may have to remind me

Great build, and I know this is 3 yrs old, but curious if you upgraded the tires? Northern Tool still has this trailer, but the stock tires are only rated for 45mph. Finding 4 bolt wheels / tire upgrade is t that easy if you want to upgrade to a 14” or 15” tire. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
The website says 45mph. I think that is because the trailer payload is 1,006 lbs. I would not go any faster with that much weight. However my tires were 87mph rated right on the tire. My kayaks and pfds, paddles, etc weigh 200lbs. So barely 20% 0f the weight rating.I pulled a thousand miles at 80 mph. I did not have a spare. I found Carlisle 12" tires (among the best trailer tires on the market) at Discount Tire already mounted to the rim cheaper than Northern tool/HF sells them. So I bought 2 because the rims were different. I am using one of the NT tires for a spare. I have been many more thousands of miles at 80 mph on the Carlisle
On the trailer build the box steal is 3x3 and the thickness is what ? I like this idea alot just if I did a build I want to make sure the tongue is strong enough for the support length.
I used 120 wall. That is overkill on purpose. It gives the trailer goo tongue weight and makes it tow like a dream

First of all thank you for sharing! I just built my 40x48 Ironton Trailer and am now planning to do exactly what you did, minus the bike rack. Did you have to drill holes in the trailer to mount the Amazon truck racks?
For each rack i was able to line up one hole in the trailer with one hole in the rack. Then I drilled one hole in the trailer to match the other hole in the rack
That’s a REAL nice rig. I was going to get the 5x8, but I like this better. Have you had to replace the hub bearings/seals yet? I’ve heard (cannot confirm) that the NT and HF trailers have odd sizes that are difficult to find. Have you experience such an issue?
The bearings had next to no grease when I bought the kit. I cleaned the junk that was there out and replaced with good marine grease. I regreased the bearings at about 3k miles, but they really didn't need it. And the bearings still looked new. So grease them right, and you don't have to worry about bearing sizes 🤔😁

What is the size of the extended tongue I heard 11’ 3x3 steel but would you happen to know the wall size

Is the base of the trailer is (W)40"x(L)48"? If the width of the width of the trailer is 40" and you have the rack bolted on that width, what is the width at the top of your rack when you turn it around? reason being is I have a trailer and for the top of the rack I have to have at least 71'' for a kayak and a cargo box for both of them to fit. when I bought it, it came with a top rack but I need to replace it because it's not very sturdy and the ladder rack would be good.
I have a kayak and a cargo box with plenty of room left over. But I don't know the width. I could measure, but you might have to remind me later

the frame is 40 inches wide between the fenders. I don't think I have ever measured the fenders, but they are probably about 8 inches wide
Any chance you have the details rear brake lights? I wanted to do something similar.
Look on my channel for a vid about a quick swap motor/rudder mount. My transom on my kayak serves 3 functions. To hold my motor, hold my rudder. And while trailering, hold that DIY stop tail turn. Towards the end of the vid there are some close up shots of that stop/tail/turn, and I talk about how I made it. Thats one of my favorite mods, as I have never seen another like it. It is 11ft of 3x3 box tube I got from a local steel yard. It is bolted. if you look in the description there is a link for a bunch of build pics.

I just googled steel shops near me. Found several. Then called around on prices. Ordered the size I wanted, and picked up 30 minutes later. It is 120 wall

this is what I used. But it shows out of stock now. I guess chinacrud has got them, like everyone else. I had a cracked endcap when I received mine. I Googled AA Racks and emailed them on a Friday night at 7:30. I didn't expect a response until Monday if ever. They got back to me in 15 minutes. So they are very responsive. did you extend the trailer tongue at all or just the trailer bike hitch? how are the tires on it? would it last long travels on highway driving? this is exactly what i planned on doing myself. though i’m concerned with the tires, the weight load & highway speeds
Look in the description for the build pics link for what i did with the tongue. My kayaks, and box full of pfds, seats and paddles weigh only 20% of the trailers rated load. Grease the bearings. Tires are fine. I have over 4,000 miles at 80mph on the interstate. Many more miles at slower speeds on the side roads

3 years and 4,500 miles at 80 mph and many more local slower miles, and zero issues. I checked WB grease and added a bit. But no other issues or maintenance required

Question, looking at this trailer online it is only rated for 45 miles an hour. I’m assuming you upgraded the tires? This work for you at highway speeds?
How long are pvc pipes. Do they extend the same length front and back?
Most kayaks will only touch the pvc along the scupper channels. So measure that. Mine was 7ft. Then I figured out where to place the pvc to make the center carry handle sit forward of the axel, for proper weight balance

More questions sorry - what distance is there between the front of the kayak and the rear of the vehicle when loaded? Wondering how long to make the hookup
I have not measured that distance. But the entire tongue is 11ft. The tongue goes to the rear cross member. The trailer is 4ft long. So 7ft in front of the trailer frame

I love the simplicity of it. Where did you get the lights and what did you use to mount them to the kayak?
Thanks. The lights are built, not bought. If you click the link in the notes for the build pics, you can see more of the light set up. The actual LED bars I got from etrailer. I have a transom on my kayak for a trolling motor. I mounted the LEDs to heat flattened PVC pipe. The PVC was inserted into an old trolling motor mount clamp, just like the motor shaft would be. Then I just attached the trolling motor clamp with the lights, to the transom mount
Great job on the build Mike. I'm in Louisiana also and wanted to know if you ran into any issuses getting your trailer registered, I read somewhere that NT didn't provide the proper paperwork or did you just register it as homemade?
You may have read about NT paperwork from me. I posted it everywhere. I had issues getting NT to send me the proper stuff. I guess the stores were new in La when I bought mine. They tell me they have corrected the issue. Once I had the stuff from NT, I went to one of those strip mall private tag offices. I was in and out with a tag in 10 minutes. Then I got the title in the mal about 10 days later

most certainly. Another kayak would fit flat, where the storage box is. Or if you want a storage box, 2 kayaks would fit on J racks beside a box

Check your speed rating. Mine came with 87mph rated tires

Great build. I see the G - Drive pics. I did not see a parts list though. Where did the AA rack (with no welds harmed during...) come from? Is there a reason you did not cap off the loading end of the PVC, and is there a reason you used the Malone cradle rather than more PVC?
The AA rack came from Amazon. No need to cap the loading end of the PVC. I just filed the sharp edge off. They work great. Besides... the view from the traffic behind me, they look like dual exhaust. :) I used the cradles because i already had them from a roof rack. If I did not already have them, I would have used PVC. The PVC works just as good, and is 10x cheaper
What's the length of your bottom Kayak? Hoping to build something similar for my 16 foot Kayak. I suppose I could always use a sandbag or similar to ensure I have enough tongue weight.
My bottom one is 13.5. Without bikes a 16 ft might slide forward enough for good tongue weight. But that beefy 3x3 box tub sure helps with tongue weight all by itself. It weighs 1/2 as much as the rest of the trailer
Very cool. My only concern would be the lack of angle struts to prevent the uprights from swaying front to back and stressing the mount points at the trailer frame. But you have it loaded and can tell for yourself if it's a problem. If it is, perhaps some simple aircraft cables "X's" and turn buckles would do the trick.
Is your DIY kayak landing gear still working out? Any, "I wish I'd done this different" things?

The racks have factory angle braces welded at the bottom. No swaying in a lot of highway miles of travel, and some of the worst non-paved launch access roads ever traveled

What gauge 3x3 box steel did you go with?
125 (1/8) wall. Probably way overkill for the tiny trailer. But it adds the tongue heft to make it tow like a dream at 80mph. And I can still pick it up with one hand and push it around the driveway

Hey quick question. It says speeds up to 45mph. Do you drive this on the interstate? How does it handle? Upgrade wheels and tires? I am looking to mimic yours and I kind of want to ignore the 45mph lol

I am not concerned about tipping. Its physics. I have never measured the rack. But the link is in the YT description. The manufacturer probably has specs

@@markkenna8162 yes. The box is about the same size as the kayak. Plenty of room between them and on each side. If you use J racks, you could get 2 kayaks and storage on the rack.
How long is your kayak on bottom rack? Mine is 14’. Would this trailer work?
The bottom yak is 13.5. Plenty of room for 6 more inches

Question for you. Could you mount the rack the same(bars extending out) but with the brackets on the outside of the trailer frame? I'm contemplating something similar to what you did but I would like the increased width to mount toolboxes on the trailer frame

My trailer is only 40" wide. The brackets are bolted on the top of the trailer frame. They have lip that goes over the outside of the frame. So they are mounted as far outboard as they can be on my tiny trailer

The tube is 120 wall. I just searched steel yards near me on Google. Found several within 5-7 miles. Called all got prices. The one closest to me was mid priced. So I called them back, ordered. Picked up in 30 minutes.

I bought a ultra tow aluminum trailer and I want to extend the tow bar but the vin/Serial number is on it. How did you do it? Or Did u just take the plaque off and put it on new tow bar?
Yep, I just drilled out the rivets, and riveted the plate on the new tongue

No welds were harmed in the building of this trailer. Everything including the AA racks were bolted

Sweet! I'm about to buy for and do some overland trips. How did you install the ladder rack? I want to do the same and put a tent up there. Easier than climbing up on top of my SUV.
It is bolted to the trailer frame. The racks have 2 bolt holes. I lined one rack hole up with an existing hole on the trailer frame. And then drilled the trailer frame for the other rack hole

Also, did you weld the AA racks to the trailer or does it have pre drilled holes compatible with the trailer? And do you think the racks will hold a folded tent rack, like the ones minted to the roof a car..
I lined up one hole of the racks with the trailer, and drilled the second hole at each upright. Then bolted the racks to the trailer. No welds were harmed in the building of the trailer. The racks are pretty solid. I have never had a roof top tent. But I think the racks are rated to around 800lbs. But better look that up to be sure
How did you attach the tool box?
With U-bolts. Look in the description, there is a link for a bunch of build pics. If you zoom in on some of the box pics, you can see the U bolts
Just wonder if you ever have any concerns with the trailer being so lite when going 60mph + and hitting bumps on the highway?
I have even less concerns at 60 than I do at 80 mph. It pulls 80 mph, literally all day long, like it wasn't there.

I can run 80 mph, literally all day. I did several trips this summer, 8hrs, 6hrs, 4 hrs, one way. I ran 80 mph on all of them. Good interstates, bad interstates, good secondary roads, bad secondary roads. It pulls like it wasn't there

How did you mount your tool box?
I used round bottom U-bolts. If you click on the build picture link, scroll down some, you will see a few close ups of the box. If you zoom in, you will see the Ubolts
What mph are the tires rated?
The tires do not have a tire manufacturer speed rating at all. The tires had a sticker at 55 mph (so that means still NOT the tire manufacturer rating) But you can look at it like this. That trailer is rated for hauling 1,060lbs. So that 1,060lbs is the the weight at which the 55 mph speed is set. But both my kayaks weigh 135lbs together. The rack, box and stuff weigh much less than 65 lbs. But lets call my trailer payload, a round number of 200lbs anyway. So that means I am running only 20% of the max trailer load. Regrease the bearings and you can run 80 mph literally all day, just like me 😎But if you have a concern, you can buy aftermarket speed rated tires

I only spent about $420 all in, not counting the bike racks. But that was before chinacrud. Prices have gone waAay up since then 😲

At 3:10 how did you make the lights?
Click on the build pics link in the description. Towards the end I have a few pics on the light build. I used a trolling motor clamp to attach to the trolling motor transom. Then I used piece of PVC in the motor shaft slot, of the clamp bracket. At the top of that PVC, is a T fitting. I heat flattened those pieces of PVC and bolted on some LED lights. Then I plug it into the rear of my trailer tongue, like the transom light was a mini trailer. That gives me stop/tail/turn lights on the transom

@@MikeJordanUnCamplicated I went to northern tool and almost bought a trailer but upon looking at specs it’s rated to 45 mph it’s not the tires it’s the bearings which are next to impossible to get I went a different route but you gave me some ideas

Just remember, or maybe you didn't know, I have 4,000+ miles at 80mph, and many more a bit slower
The trailer has a 1,060 lbs load rating. I wouldn't go over 45 mph with 1,060 lbs either. But my kayaks and box full of stuff weigh 200lbs. So I am only 20% of the trailers max weight. My tires are N speed rated. So that is 87 mph. I only go 80 mph. YMMV, check the tires when you buy. Next, I sold bearings for years. So the first thing I was going to do was replace the bearings. I pulled the bearings. They were name brand quality. (all of the American brands are made off shore now) But they were pathetically greased. So I properly regreased them. As mentioned above.... thousands of miles at 80 mph over 2+ years... ZERO issues
Question, looking at this trailer online it is only rated for 45 miles an hour. I’m assuming you upgraded the tires? This work for you at highway speeds?
I run 80mph, literally all day like it wasn't there. Let me help with the speed rating. I saw the same 45mph on the web listing. The tires come with a sticker (not manufacture rating) at 55mph. But all of those speed restrictions are based on the trailer weight rating. That tiny trailer is rated to haul 1,060lbs. (I would not go very fast with all that weight either) But my kayaks, and box full of seats, paddles, and pfds weigh less than 200lbs. So I am only carrying 20% of the rated weight. Grease the bearings and run 80mph like I do
@@MikeJordanUnCamplicated thanks, 45 to 75 was a pretty big jump in my mind. You pretty satisfied with the build quality? I’ve been debating the jet ski trailer option as well, but affordable ones are few and far between on the secondary market.
@@jeffreyt7177 45-80 is a bigger jump. The trailer is about 15 moths old. Its been half way across the country a few times, more 2-5 hour trips, and even more across town. Zero issues or complaints

@@jeffreyt7177 that is 11ft of 120wall 3x3 box tube. Probably over kill. But the extra tongue weight (literally) is one of the things that make it tow like a dream
How fast do you pull this? Do you feel comfortable going the speed limit?
I run 80 mph. Pulls like it is not there. I just got back from a trip 8 hours each way at 80 mph
80? Is that with the stock tires? I’m considering this trailer but the rated speed has me second guessing
