I think this was the encore after they had performed a 3 hour concert with no warm-up band. Mark was a perfectionist and would book out a rehearsal room for a couple of weeks before a tour so the band were practised to the point where they knew every note and every nuance of every song inside out. On stage they could put all the effort into putting on a great show for the audience. Also this show was on their home turf where the audience could practically sing the songs with them. I'm just sorry I missed it!
I saw an interview with rhythm guitarist Hal Lindes recently and he said that normally his experience working with other bands was a couple of weeks of rehearsals before heading out on tour, but with Mark and Dire Straits it was more than a couple of months! I also read that Eric Clapton went to every one of their shows for 2 weeks straight, probably during their 1985 stint at Wembley Arena, simply to marvel at how Mark was able to essentially play all the solos virtually identically note-for-note every single night. In later years Mark started improvising a lot more, but in those earlier days he very much had that perfectionist streak hence all that practice. I think he eventually found a happy balance because he also talked once about how he got home after a gig and wasn't happy and while talking things through with his wife came to realise it was because by just improvising he'd lost certain elements and phrasing from songs that were integral to them. So, for example, Sultans of Swing has to include that riff and the time bell chord etc. or it just isn't 'right'. Since then he improvises certain parts but always ensures the key melodies and riffs are incorporated.
I first discovered Dire Straits in 1980 and every evening I would give myself a concert by playing the 2 albums - I was addicted ! Over the next 3 years my training and education took over my life and took me away from listening to this band. In this last 2 weeks November 2023 I have rediscovered Dire Straits only to find I MISSED THEIR BEST YEARS 1983 TO 1996 !!! Soon after 1983 (I don’t know exactly when) they acquired a saxophone player and when I got used to the sax in Sultans Of Swing and many other numbers it became embedded in my ears (I’m talking in November 2023!) and as the years went by other instruments were introduced and melded into the group perfectly - each and every time adding to the richness of the music. In this performance above were 5 (keyboards and piano; drums, and 3 guitars) but in one of the later iterations of the band I counted 12 ! One gig included a string quartet; another a choir; additional members brought with them bouzouki; accordion; tambourine, double lap steel guitar, maraca, flute, and others. If you have not already listened to ‘Brothers In Arms’, this has to be your next review! Mark Knopfler (pronounced nop-fler) developed the sophistication, breadth and depth of the group through time. You cant really go wrong with Dire Straits. I saw them live in 1985 aged 16, and it's still my favourite concert. I dont know why it doesn't get recommended very often but the live version of "On Every Street" is simply gorgeous, and definitely worth a reaction.
I always liked the song and Knophler's guitar work. I thought, wow it would fit the Telegraph road where I live. Almost two generations later I found out it was about the road where I live.

Dire Straits have so many amazing songs. Different genres, all great. One of the best bands ever, if not, the best! I always loved The Walk of Life, Lady Writer and Tunnel of Love.
Ah memories - listening to Dire Straits driving around Southern England in an old Jag out of UNi in London around 1983. Makes me proud to be a Brit as it did then. We had the best bands for sure!! So good to see young people still discovering them.
Mark is pure magic and Dire Straits are the best band in the world, and if they don't want to put them at No.1, the Whole band should at least be on the podium. Mark has an unmistakable touch that makes you dream; his lyrics are refined and sophisticated, often steeped in mystery and full of ancient memories. Mark is the king of rock at once elegant and powerful, and the whole band blends into a superlative architecture. Dire Straits is so unique that it is beyond any comparison. I can tell you exactly why it feels different. The bands that knew turned there instruments at 441khz when all music was supposed to be 432khz. So if you like you can change any modern song 2000 and on to 441. 432 is lower in frequency and pushes a negative. This song describes humanities journey using the telegraph road as the perfect metaphor of mans expansion and ultimate loss of direction. Actually it's a 1930s National Style O. Both resonators, just made by different manufacturers. I seem to recall the construction of the resonator discs are slightly different between the two but they certainly look very similar overall.
Sky Arts have just done a survey of the top guitar riffs of all time. Money for Nothing came in at number 5... two places below Sultans of Swing. Bizarrely both were beaten by Purple Rain, which I wouldn't regard as a riff-driven song at all!
I’m afraid it’s stuff like this with no autotune or corrective technology of any kind that shows (and I’m not very old) that music now isn’t as good as it clearly once was. Not sure why, perhaps the commercialism has stunted the ability of artists and groups to experiment (for example can you imagine a label letting their group release a bohemian rhapsody today - no…)! Shame…
