He is giving you all of the "little" how-to's that someone would WANT to know IF they were completely NEW to this! It really covers all the little questions someone may be asking themselves here & there. Love it. I am going to have my kids watch this one. :) This makes for a wonderful teacher.
I grew up in a home with a Father & Grandfather whom were BOTH Master Carpenters . Believe it or not I haven't made a birdhouse or feeder since I was about 10 years old. I just wanted to get some ideas before I started to see what types of styles are out there. :) I use pallet wood to make lots of things for inside & outside the house. My Family had a GREAT sense of humor & my father was a silly rambler while he worked also. This guy just brought back sooo many memories from my childhood learning. I could not resist watching the entire thing. Love it! & Thank You

Hi greame great video you should save yourself even the more effort and invest in a air nailer which excepts 10 to 50mm brad nails. Saves so much time and leaves a tiny entry hole. Bearly visible to the eye. Much better than having the heads of nails and screws showing through. Gives a much better finish. Keep the great videos comming greame. Enjoy watching them 🙂
Used to make "pallet furniture" years ago. Made a nice desk with drawers and a coffee table. Nice video. Gotta do something when the weather is bad, right ?
Ah yer a saint! I was looking for bird boxes for the (even worse Scottish weather) poor wee birds in the woods behind my family home in Scotland (I'm slightly warmer, but only slightly. ..in London lol) and as long as you don't have every tool known to man I may be able to follow this. ..wish me luck and thanks for the video.
Grahame, you are superb a laugh a minute love your vids, just a few comments. Check out the RSPB web site on bird boxes and a few tips. Nip off the corners of the base for ventilation. Build in a hinged section to clean out or they will abandon it after one or two seasons. Never put a perch on it makes it easy for magpies to perch and steal eggs or kill chicks. Roughen up the inside of the face to give the chicks a chance to get out. The access hole for tits is smaller to suit this size of box, or make the box bigger to suit the hole for starlings. None of these comments are intended to be stupid or offensive Just helpful. I love your videos and will keep watching them
I just stumbled across your video whilst researching how to build a dovecote - very funny - but would like to challenge your comments re 'boys toys' lol. After spending 5 weeks DIYing/renovating various things and using some power tools for the first time, they are no longer 'boys toys' ;o) I thoroughly enjoyed using a bolt cutter, electric saw, electric sander and drill along with other tools ;o) I now hope to do more! Great end to the dog kennel video by the way - very funny! ;o)))
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else is searching for build your own birdhouse try Panlarko Expert Aviary Planner (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got excellent success with it.
Thinking purely of how to keep the birds happy and really not wanting to appear negative to the enthusiast, but the hole needs to be a bit smaller 32mm and there needs to be a deeper drop from the hole to base of the box so that the nesting material and chicks in it, won't be near the beak and claws of predators trying to coax them out to eat. RSPB website gives ideas. Graeme gave me woodworking the cutting and fixing know-how. Many thanks
How long does it take to make her "Dinner", i think she enjoys you being out there as much as you do ;) (Also a little tip for the reciprocating saw is make sure that the head of the tool (the shoe) is touching when you cut, it give the anchor point that the blade reciprocates around) Like the style, Keep Crackin
Pallets are very rough depending the quality and type of pallets you use.. euro pallets are rough and a splinter can hurt the bird but that's an awesome idea! Not sure if the wood is safe for the bird tho, I've seen what type of environment and how pallet wood is handled. But thanks great video 5/5
Some birds will nest just about anywhere, very unlikely a baby bird would come to any harm from the average pallet wood. If anyone is going to make one of these I doubt they would use rough wood.
I got the same knee problem as you, the thing is I'm only 39 years old. I think the 3 lower back surgeries and osteoarthritis of the joints doesn't help
Good the first year, might get a second. The nesting material starts to decay and bacteria starts to stink. They don't come back. Need a hole at the bottom, maybe a bottle lid and a screw to swing away to clean out.
Nice box ,but birds don't need the perch and it just helps predators get to them. The box needs to be deep too as anything could just reach in and get the babies if they are level with the hole when a nest is inside.
Yes. Remove all old nesting material in October time. Tip in some boiling water which will kill off any nasty little mites as well and the job is done. Repair anything that needs attention. Never use Creosote at all inside or outside the next box. Put the bird box where you had it before you will find they will use it again either the parents of the young of that year when they turn adults. Hope all this information helps you and good luck
alan wall It's not wise to remove old nest materials, lots of small birds actually sleep in the nest box over winter, usually with other birds. I;ve seen 7-8 Wrens in one nest box in November.

alan wall Doing a birds work will eventually make them lazy, they will rely on someone maintaining their nest each time and forget how to do it themselves. The same goes for feeding birds, certain/most species do not need help at all.
There are several factors in creating an amazing design. One resource I discovered that successfully combines these is the Aviary Magic Method (check it out on google) definately the most incredible info i've heard of. look at this amazing website.

85% of pallet wood is untreated pine or oak people who know their wood can tell ,some pallets are made of pressure treated wood wich has cyanide and other bad chemicals in it, and should never be burned indoors standard white pine ,oak pallets are fine!!.

Soulware3D that's very true:) hmm is there any way of making the pallet wood more smoother?
Dylan Sardar Use a Belt Sander :)
Soulware3D will keep that in mind! Thanks :D
Loved it loved it loved, especially the banging your head bit....you should be a comedian lol
You must be pretty confident your wifes never going to watch this.... or youll be living in that man cave! Haha

With the weather we tried piking for first time got 3 jack pike in 2hours not bad I think lol
Good effort!
is there any chance you could do one of a bird feeder or bird table please
You need to buy yourself a speed square
Nice box ,but birds don't need the perch and it just helps predators get to them. The box needs to be deep too as anything could just reach in and get the babies if they are level with the hole when a nest is inside.
True, but it also depends on the bird type and where you live.
How are you suppose to clean the old nest out to have new birds the next yr??
If the bird successfully nested once or twice in a year it'll come back next year and repair the old nest itself.
Yes. Remove all old nesting material in October time. Tip in some boiling water which will kill off any nasty little mites as well and the job is done. Repair anything that needs attention. I think Graeme has gone a bit bird brained!
Very nice but too long a video with unnecessary stuff.
next week: "how to build a fish house from pallet wood"
would this be on TAoutdoors
+hitman harvey Hi, yes we have this on a playlist on TA Outdoors and we have more pallet wood creations on TA outdoors
Yup, with those dimensions it'll be full of squirrels in no time....
buy a square pal ;)
Did Graeme cut his right wrist?
Will flying fish nest in this?
big fan of tafishing............but a video of bird boxes......????
little less talk, a lot more action!

nice video, but VERY IRRESPONSIBLE AT THE END. Please no one ever burn pallet wood, it is not safe to burn, even outdoors let alone indoors
85% of pallet wood is untreated pine or oak people who know their wood can tell ,some pallets are made of pressure treated wood wich has cyanide and other bad chemicals in it, and should never be burned indoors standard white pine ,oak pallets are fine!!.
problem is most people cant tell if its been treated or not, and also here in the UK the percentage of treated pallets are alot higher!
He rambles too much. Just get on with it! Sheesh!
