I could weep, I remember when the town was always busy and full in the 60’s and 70’s, all the lovely old shops on bridgegate and cobbled road, so sad, if only we could buy back time 🥴🥲
My, it did look cold that day Neil. Thanks for bringing me back to my old stopping grounds whilst living in a small village in Rotherham. I've spent many a Saturday running to the market to get bits and bobs. And of course trips to the Interchange or rail station to places much grander! I've notice a few shops have closed and a few l've never seen before. Hoping it won't decline anymore and people return once again! Cheers! :)
I used to live here over 30 years ago before I moved to Australia, it was a vibrant town even though Meadowhall was built. Heaven knows what’s happened, it looks like a scene from ‘The Apocalypse’ it’s very sad. I have no idea how you would attract people back…..Another large shopping mall perhaps ?…..Who knows ? Jobs for the town and catchment area would be a good starting point. Thank you for the walk round video, hope you’ve warmed up a bit.
Neil I was genuinely shocked after watching this. It's so sad to see a town centre so empty in the middle of December, it really is a sign of the times I suppose🙁
Yes sad to see this town so empty! I've been before and it was 'ok' but not packed Now it just seems finished It urgently needs rapid help I think Darren Tomorrow's video is a bit more upbeat 👍🏻
Its soul destroying seeing Rotherham centre today. The 50s and 60s was its peak, bustling , thriving. Its not just Meadowhall thats caused the problem, coal mines and steelworks started to disappear from the 70s onwards and poor council decisions on planning have all helped in the decline of the town. The miners and steelworkers worked and played hard and spent money in the town , all gone now. PS. I think the bank was a Lloyds branch
I grew up in a village in Rotherham and during the early 90s, Rotherham was so busy, such a shame it’s so quiet and barely any of the bigger brands shops around to persuade people to visit. Parkgate isn’t far from the town centre and that’s where everyone is

Great film Neil, thank you for sharing. I only visit the town centre when I need my van servicing (at Masborough) so I tend to hang around around there to kill some time for half a day maybe twice a year. Different times of the year too and it's always dead (when you can hear the echo of peoples chatter then you know what I mean!). I'm sorry to say what a sad state affairs things have gradually become. If it's a nice day I tend to sit in Clifton Park (Cenotaph Gardens) to get away from the centre (it's probably busier there to be fair). It's been a perfect storm which began brewing since the 80's. Several factors to blame for its demise. I like to remain optimistic but how can a town like Rotherham possibly recover? Definitely the Nat West - I used to use the ATM to refill the wallet on 100's of nights out over the years. I must say, I've never noticed the blue plaque behind the old jewellers where the artwork is - I'll look into that. Keep up the great work!
It's a shame there isn't more Rotherham people supporting their town centre. Meadowhall is just down the road which must be seeing lots of custom from the towns population. Hopefully the local people will rally round, there needs to be more footfall or else many of these shops will close. Rotherham minster looks fantastic. Thanks for another excellent video.
Being from Rotherham I can explain why nobody comes here anymore. Unfortunately it is true meadowhall is only down the road and we have parkgate too which is a big retail centre. Therefore we don't need to go into town. The biggest reason is that the town centre is now associated with people begging for money and wherever you go in town you feel like you're always watching over your shoulder. Its a shame because I'd like to say I'm proud of where I was born but after the last so many years of 'grooming' and the way the town is, I can't say I am.
Love my town, even in the state it's in. At 8:23 theres a statue of queen victoria on top of the building just off centre of screen you can just see it here.
22:49 The bank building you asked about, used to be Lloyds Bank. Unless we see Rotherham cleared of rowdies and other undesirables, this town will never flourish. Decent people have been forced out of Rotherham. We shop elsewhere. Meadowhall, Parkgate etc.
Beautiful filming, its the second one me and my partner have watched of Rotherham. We live, work and own a business in Rotherham Town centre. You caught our building beautiful 😍 We have been operating for 10 years, its not all Doom and gloom.
It looks like you filmed this during the worst of lockdown. Unbelieveable. I was thinking maybe it was filmed at like half 7 in the morning or something but no. The clock showed around mid-day! And everywhere is shut. Such a shame, you'd think December would get the streets busy anywhere.
Very Sad to see that even at the Time of Christmas 🎄 it is not filled with love and fun . People are not seen having a walk at the City Center. Hope a Miracle happens and the Glory is back . 👍

I certainly hope that your videos are seen in years to come ... let's hope so. We all love to see cine-film from Victorian times, so I hope these will be as fascinating. The filming was just as good with a telephone, to my untrained eye, than an expensive camera. So why bother buying expensive stuff ?? My favourite building was the jewellers, with the big clock, the frontage was very intricate, and lovely, someone's very hard work, skills you don't see now. 😒 Oxford is trying to bring in the "15 minute" cities but this town has already declined so much, I think they may have to pay people to go "in" to town . . . There is not a lot now in rotherham now. The big tesco caused a lot of the small shops to go plus Parkgate retail park . It won't recover now rotherham town has gone I'm afraid
Great film, the Minster, Chapel on the Bridge, a traditional indoor, out market (and I come from Sheffield to Rotherham fishing in the Don, it's better) if you want to see busy and where the people of Rotherham are, go to Parkgate Retail World, the roads leading to it will be jam packed, Rawmarsh Hill for example, will be queuing from Warren Vale, you will struggle to cross a road it's so busy. And that's a normal weekend, let alone the run up to Christmas. In fact, I hardly see any one walking about anywhere, just really busy dual carriageways, cars zooming to retail parks. Please do a film at Parkgate, you'll be surprised, don't take the expensive camera, take the iPhone again, just in case you get run over! 🤣
You missed out the busy indoor and larger outdoor markets, that is where you would have found more customers. You did the same on your last video so giving a false impression. There is a massive town centre Tesco that gets packed just across the road from the markets. The one you showed is like an overflow. Rotherham also has a large out of town retail world that is also packed out. True most of the High Street is getting derelict, more town centre easier parking would be my preferred way to get people back in the town centre. I have lived here all my life but tend to shop out of town with easier parking. That old pub is very haunted. They won’t use the third floor because of it. If you ask at the bar they are happy to show you upstairs. My friend did this a couple of days ago and a voice told him to get out. The woman showing him around had her head scratched. He later went to the toilet on the second floor and someone was knocking on the door so he opened it and he was completely alone. Well worth another visit.
On the subject of seeing your videos in years to come - I've just watched a film called "Morning in the Streets 1958" on the Elvis Kline channel. It just popped up, go watch it, I think you will love the history before your very eyes !!
Go down to Parkgate shopping complex and it will be packed as there plenty of parking for free. Rotherham council have killed the town centre with there parking charges and they wast millions redesigning the bus station every few years. @Gimball Walk. You ask for comments. First check out this TH-cam video. Rotherham then and now. You will find a lot of answers there. As for the future I believe that towns will be just like the surrounding estates - souless. If the councils had any sense they would limit the business rates and tie it to the profits of the particular business. Shops could then reduce their prices. Councils will not do that. Rotherham is a glaring example of how the managers of a town look after their own positions and salaries before looking after the people who make the place thrive. So the police and social workers cover up crime and the council joins in with the corruption. The serious child abuse that those in authority covered up and the fact that they still have not been dismissed indicates that the commercial side will collapse. Then you have to add to that situation the fact that the government supported by the so-called opposition allowed big pharma to make huge profits from a disease no worse than the yearly flu that many died in previous years. They lie to us and give us money to passify us, but now the people cannot afford to shop because they are taxing us and spending our money to support Ukraine's corrupt regime. The lies about Russia are fed to us each day. Most people do not know of the two Minsk agreements where we promised not to build NATO bases in Ukraine. We were not told how Zelinski with our support attacked the Russian speaking citizens of Ukraine. So Rotherham is just one example of this county's decline. You might be surprised to learn that I blame the people in the video that I first described. They allowed the evil to thrive and the present day people do the same. Those in charge should be in prison. but they thrive by enslaving you. Wake up!
what happened to all the overhead and lampost street decorations, minister decorations and call that a bloody tree......the town centre aside from decorations is a disaster.. Town is empty as no buses it seems either nor any car parking in town.
This video shows why I and most people I know never set foot in town. Unless I go to the football or need the bank\opticians, there is no reason to go. All the shops and bars have shut. It's depressing and bleak af! The only people there are dodgy druggys & pickpockets from Eastwood. It's took 8 years for them to start work on that cinema complex. By the time it's built there will be nothing else left! This gives a bad image of Rotherham as there are actually some nice parts, such as Wickersley which is full of upmarket bars and restaurants. And is where people go for a night out now. Rotherham council and Meadowhall being 2 miles away ruined a once decent town centre. It's never coming back.
I live in Rotherham don't bother visiting it's a terrible town with shops closed down if it wasant for the fact I was born here I would not send a dog to live here.it used to be brilliant but not any more
Born in Rotherham 1959. 60s and 70s were the high times for the town. 80s and it was starting to shut down. Not been back since the 90s and it was awful then. Such a shame but just the same as other towns.
I live seven miles away from Rotherham in a ex coal mining village called maltby. This was our biggest local shopping hub as a child my parents brought me here in thr 80's early 90's. The place was was thriving all day everyday. Sad to see it look so empty now. The same is happening all through most towns in the UK
Interested to see- I’m from maltby too. But moved away 4 years ago to Texas United States. I haven’t been back there for 4 years and plan to make this year the year I visit. I miss Yorkshire, good day to ya

Those in charge should be in prison. but they thrive by enslaving you. Wake up!
Rotherham town centre is dead, lot of closed shops mostly since Primark closed, hopefully with the new investments will come back to life.
And now, since Wilko closed.
Shit hole..... I live here. X
Agree with other comments eerie like even worse than a Sunday that's why not pressing like button 👎
Yeah very eerie
what happened to all the overhead and lampost street decorations, minister decorations and call that a bloody tree......the town centre aside from decorations is a disaster..
Yes definitely in need of urgent and significant help to improve
I live in Rotherham don't bother visiting it's a terrible town with shops closed down if it wasant for the fact I was born here I would not send a dog to live here.it used to be brilliant but not any more
It looks as bad as it is
😮
Born in Rotherham 1959. 60s and 70s were the high times for the town. 80s and it was starting to shut down. Not been back since the 90s and it was awful then. Such a shame but just the same as other towns.
So true
I live seven miles away from Rotherham in a ex coal mining village called maltby. This was our biggest local shopping hub as a child my parents brought me here in thr 80's early 90's. The place was was thriving all day everyday. Sad to see it look so empty now. The same is happening all through most towns in the UK
Interested to see- I’m from maltby too. But moved away 4 years ago to Texas United States. I haven’t been back there for 4 years and plan to make this year the year I visit. I miss Yorkshire, good day to ya
