Just found your videos and googled you. You passed away in 2018, thank you for your work, may it live on and inspire more people. Going to buy your book!
You floored me when you just put the acid and water containers in the big container and let them sit to get the high grade acid!!! Thats great!! On of the things I love about chemistry is that it gets you to think and solve problems
Seems to me that you could increase the concentration to “saturation” by adding a carefully measured amount of desiccant like calcium chloride. That way, you could add enough to decrease the water content of both containers by half, giving you the same HCl concentration but reagent grade.
Excellent video! One question though: if I wanted to make 100 mL of near 10 M reagent grade HCl using this method, could I do as you do, and get the 5.1 M, and then put it in a new reaction chamber with fresh muriatic acid. Between the 10.2 and the 5.1, the new concentration would be 7.65 M. Then repeat again to attain 8.925, and then again to 9.5625M. Thus, by this third pass, we would have used 300 mL muriatic at 10.2 M to make 100 mL at 9.5625 M reagent grade HCl solution. This should work?
im having trouble understanding why you would want to go down in molarity to concentrate it more.. If the muriatic acid was around 10 Molar wouldnt that make it more concentrated, cuz it has more solute per liter then the 5 molar reagent grade HCl? im sorry if this is a silly question.. just trying to understand.
Ok, so I guess distilling would be the only way to get 32 to 37%? when distilling can you start with 32% on both sides for faster results? Do you need to start with distilled?
how can you increase the concentration of the pure 5M HCl, for reactions that require highly concentrated HCl, or for those reactions would you just suggest using the technical grade 10M HCl?
@TheHomeScientist 2 questions: 1 - can i add more distilled water instead of 100ml? 2 - once the distilled water turns to pure hydrochloric acid, can i use that pure acid to make more of it?
Love the series! I have sucessfuly concentrated ammonium hydroxide from the regular store strenght to maximum (35%) by heating the solution and catching and redisolving the gas in distilled water. I used a hot water bath for the gas source and a chilled recieving solution. Could you do the same thing here? Gently heat your "store grade" HCL solution in a water bath and drive off the HCL gas. Then redisolve in chilled distilled water using a bubble stone. Faster & higher concetrations possible.
Can i make nitric acid this way. Because i don't have aparaturs for distilation, and i mix a nitrate salt and conc. H2SO4 and put it in a box with another glass and HNO3 fumes will condense in glass. Am i right? Please answer me. Thanks. (i want 70% HNO3)
So, is there any way at all to acquire at least low-grade reagent grade Nitric acid? I am not a chemist, so I have no licensing to purchase such material. (Which is ironic, because I do have a license to purchase reactor-grade uranium.) ;)
How about adding some (just SOME) sulphuric acid in the first container? maybe the reciving container would get higher concentration of hydrochloric acid than the first container ????
can i make pure ammonia(28-30%) or concentrated hydrochlorid acid (37,5%) by bubbling anhydrous ammonia gas or hydrogen chloride gas respectively into a water container?
What is inpurity in HCl? It is made only from HCl gas and water. Why is it yellow? I have from same factory two hydrochloric acids, one is 32% and it is yellow and 20% and it is colorless. Both are technical grade. Is this acid pure enough for home chemistry? For example my copper chloride is made from tech HCl and it seems to be pure. Also copper sulfate isn't bought to be laboratory grade so copper from there is same purity like copper from made CuCl2. Am i right?
I have tried this on a toilet cleaner that says had 20% HCL but after a month I found that the distilled water has no change in weight and ph. help me please?
If I stock up on muriatic acid, and store it in a plastic mini-shed outside in my backyard, will the seasonal variations in temperature cause it to degrade faster? I live in the northern tier of the U.S. and rarely is it 20º C often. The shed supposedly does keep out rain and moisture though.
Amazingly simple method to get cheap useful dilute analytical grade HCl, simply genius! Not much work to do this, even if it takes a fairly long time for diffusion to complete. Perhaps some wicks in the raw acid could increase evaporation area and speed up the process somewhat, glass wool or simply rock wool or something could work?
Hi, can I evaporate first the muriatic acid to get a more concentrated solution before purifying it with this technique? or will I evaporate the water after the acid?? thanks... also, can I make this process with phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid too??
Just a question. Using your method to obtain a different acid. Placing in one container a mixture of sulfuric acid, and potassium nitrate, and a separate container of distilled water, both sealed in a larger container. Would that produce nitric acid in the distilled water? If so,what should the ratio of potassium, and sulfuric be?
Hello, TheHomeScientist, i have a question, can hydrogen peroxide be concentrated in a similar way? Not exactly the same way, but similar, i would have two containers, one with dilute hydrogen peroxide and other with anhydrus calcium chlorhidre.
I have 32% reagent grade Hydrochloric acid. I'm trying to get a 20.2% HCL, 29.8% H2O and 50%Alcohol mixture. Would it be possible to use this method by adding x% (I guess 50%) distilled water and 99.9% alcohol in the reagent jar? Maybe I can get to 20.2% HCL after doing this twice. Would this be the same as starting out with 40.4% HCL?
I love your commentary you have a voice like an 8th grade English teacher I had. You make things simple and easy to understand. I saw somewhere you had a book could you tell me the name and cost thank you Dan Yost
The hydrochloric Acid that you used in this project, what strength is it? My daughter is doing a project where she needs to mimic stomach acid by usuing the hydrochloric acid. Although I'm having a hard time locating the hcl with a 0.1M. Her project is How Antacids Relieve Heartburn. Please help.
Hello Robert, i got only OTC HCl which has 18% concentration. I would love to get some higher grade HCl around 30% possibly to arrive to 37%. If i use your method, for axample putting in the recipient A, the exact double eg. 1 lt 18% HCl and in the container B just exactly the half , 500 ml, what would I obtain? 2 containers with both 36% 500 ml HCl? What do you think i could expect? Thanks for the answer in advance. :-)
I think you'd get the concentration split by 3 instead of 2... that means 33% on each container, meaning you could take more advantage from the impure acid but end up with more water diluded with the puryfied one... I'm not an expert so it's just a thought, correct me if necessary, lol
@TheHomeScientist Does nitric acid decompose over time? I don't know much about chemistry but doesn't it decompose into nitrogen dioxide oxygen and water?
I don't get any sound except for a soft white noise, nothing else. I know it's not my computer because I get sound on literally every other video. Please, this is the only thing I can find on purifying HCl, can someone please help?? And the captions don't make any sense, so I can't use that.
Take it to the next level. Add an equal molar amount of anhydrous calcium chloride to the crude muriatic acid just before sealing it up. I would surmise that additional hydrogen chloride would be disengaged and increase concentration of purified acid. The other container would have hydrated calcium chloride which could be dehydrated by heat.
Thanks, you saved me from adding something already said! I had to comment, since I just took a swallow of Coke when he said that. Now I'm cleaning up the mess left after I spit it out on my keyboard and monitor.
Andrij Kozych Well, if your intention is to distill anhydrous HCl, you'll need to find a way of cooling the condenser (use a glass container, not a retort) to below -85.05 degrees centigrade, because that's the temperature at which pure HCl boils. If you can get liquid nitrogen, you should be able to condense dry HCl easily, but unless you have a pressurized gas cylinder made out of a material that won't be attacked by an acid, you won't be able to store it without constant refrigeration. That being said, HCl does form various azeotropes with water, which I would suggest looking into as they most likely have higher boiling points than the pure substance.
Yes, the difference in the two is, reagent grade or 100% HCI is very clear like water. Muriatic acid has iron impurities in it, thus the slight yellow color.
Rick Williams 100% HCl is a gas (hydrogen chloride). Hydrochloric acid (or muriatic acid - old name) is a solution of that gas in water - the maximum concentration of hydrochloric acid at room temperature is about 38% by weight and it doesn't even stay long at that concentration because the gas is constantly escaping when you open the bottle - the higher the concentration the faster the gas escapes from the water. Such concentrated acid is also called "fuming hydrochloric acid" because it fumes (releases HCl gas). You can go a bit higher than 40% conc. if you constantly keep the acid cooled and under pressure but that's not really practical.
I feel like I'm missing something. If HCl migrated to the distilled water container, didn't you in fact, dilute the acid from its original strength in the other container? He said he started with 10.x molar of HCl and in the end had 2 containers with 5 moles each, so what was effected?
I read on the Journal of Chemistry Education that you can dehydrate hydrochloric acid with calcium chloride. Might try the same trick but add the muriatic acid to 100 grams of calcium chloride in the container. I would think you could get 7 Molar Reagent HCl or better.
unless reagent grade HCI dose not react with aluminum this does not work. the distilled water container contained 80 ml of ???? the muratic acid container still reacted with aluminum and the reagent grade hci did not
What was wrong with my grammar? Sulfuric acid is much easily available than hcl and can be concentrated a lot easily. But when you filter the product remember to wash it with sodium carbonate solution since acid impurities can detonate it. TCAP can be an useful compound when no other blasting caps are available, but theres always people who are so called kewls who are not interested in any chemistry behind it and just want biggest boom they can get.

Your voice sounds a little like Nurdrage's, but older. Great videos.
I LOLed at that "Howes or Lome Depot - what" tongue twister.
Can I use harpic which also has hydrochloric acid pls tell
Seems to me that you could increase the concentration to “saturation” by adding a carefully measured amount of desiccant like calcium chloride. That way, you could add enough to decrease the water content of both containers by half, giving you the same HCl concentration but reagent grade.
Hose or loandepot , hilarious at the end Thank you for the info. Very gracious
you are a great human, thank you very much, elements respected
5.1 molarity is how many percent hydrochloric acid?
@FortNikitaBullion So just curious, why did you say Howes and Lome's Depot?
Excellent video! One question though: if I wanted to make 100 mL of near 10 M reagent grade HCl using this method, could I do as you do, and get the 5.1 M, and then put it in a new reaction chamber with fresh muriatic acid. This should work?
hey if i use 100 ml of 31% and 50 ml of distiled water would that give a higher concentration than if i used 100 ml of water?
this is absolutely genius. i never realized hcl had a higher vapor pressure than water, or maybe slightly lower but still.
What kind of plastic are used for the containers?
im having trouble understanding why you would want to go down in molarity to concentrate it more.. If the muriatic acid was around 10 Molar wouldnt that make it more concentrated, cuz it has more solute per liter then the 5 molar reagent grade HCl? im sorry if this is a silly question.. just trying to understand.
He's not concentrating it more, he is purifying it (removing the iron or whatever is in the store bought one). It will go down in concentration.
I saw a video with you on Amazon,; I loved it. I am glad I found your channel I'm definitely subscribing.
Ok, so I guess distilling would be the only way to get 32 to 37%? when distilling can you start with 32% on both sides for faster results? Do you need to start with distilled?

I have the same problem. Try activating the subs. Not great but works
@TheHomeScientist
2 questions:
1 - can i add more distilled water instead of 100ml?
2 - once the distilled water turns to pure hydrochloric acid, can i use that pure acid to make more of it?
how do you concentrate the pure less concentrated hydrochloric acid?
@TheHomeScientist
Thankyou.
Just looking for an easy way to produce nitric acid.
and what amount of both and water?
Thanks, Robert. I recently had insulated garage doors installed, so I may store the jugs in the garage and just run with it.
So what if your acid happens to be weaker than muriatic and is a mixture of sulfuric acid and HCl?
Awesome so if I had two containers with distilled water rather than one I'd get twice as much...?
Love the series! I have sucessfuly concentrated ammonium hydroxide from the regular store strenght to maximum (35%) by heating the solution and catching and redisolving the gas in distilled water. So what would be the new acid's concentration be?
Doesn't this dilute the acid, as the HCl is being split between the two containers?
Can i make nitric acid this way. Because i don't have aparaturs for distilation, and i mix a nitrate salt and conc. H2SO4 and put it in a box with another glass and HNO3 fumes will condense in glass. Am i right? Please answer me. Thanks. (i want 70% HNO3)

can i make pure ammonia(28-30%) or concentrated hydrochlorid acid (37,5%) by bubbling anhydrous ammonia gas or hydrogen chloride gas respectively into a water container?
So did you ever figure out that bromine reaction?
how does this make it more pure if it is less concentrated?
would adding heat speed the process?
I could store some outside, in the shed, and some in the garage. Then do tests of samples from both for any color or pH change.
What is inpurity in HCl? It is made only from HCl gas and water. Why is it yellow?

Any way to concentrate the pure acid?

Perhaps some wicks in the raw acid could increase evaporation area and speed up the process somewhat, glass wool or simply rock wool or something could work?
Do both containers have the same concentration of hcl? Can we combine them?
can i use #5 plastic for this experiment?
What is the PH diff. between the technical grade 30-32% acid and the reagent grade 38-39%+ acid?
Will this work with distilled isopropanol?
can you use the same purification process for sulfuric acid?
I thought boiling HCl made it weaker, or is this only in high concentrations?
Hi, can I evaporate first the muriatic acid to get a more concentrated solution before purifying it with this technique? or will I evaporate the water after the acid?? thanks... also, can I make this process with phosphoric acid and sulphuric acid too??
I appreciate your videos, please keep them coming. You said to use distilled water - yet other sites clearly state to use deionized water.
GrayCoLLC they're both purified water
Is there an easy way to purify sulfuric acid? I bought sulfuric acid from Lowes but it has an odd reddish color.
would it be strong enough to get the silver our the nitric acid
Would adding some calcium chloride to the tub containing the technical grade HCl help speed it up? Since it should eat up the water, correct?
Could you distill muriatic acid w/CaCl2 and a small amount of water in the receiving flask (to dissolve HCl gas before azeotrope comes over)?
So is pure better for cleaning concrete?
I have 32% reagent grade Hydrochloric acid. I'm trying to get a 20.2% HCL, 29.8% H2O and 50%Alcohol mixture. Would it be possible to use this method by adding x% (I guess 50%) distilled water and 99.9% alcohol in the reagent jar? Maybe I can get to 20.2% HCL after doing this twice. Would this be the same as starting out with 40.4% HCL?
Does this really work? How did the concentration of HCl increase? Hoping someone could explain...
does it works for impure hydrochloric acid?
Would this method work for sulphuric acid?
Sound?
Can this same method be used for converting Rooto's Sulfuric Acid into reagent grade sulfuric acid?
I dont know why, is my speaker or yours mic is malfunction. because I only hear your voice coming out from my left speaker only.
What is the % muriatic acid you use?
Not sure how much to mix if I want say 6% or 5% solution.
he uses 41% or 35%
What would pure hydrochloric acid do to your skin?
my left ear really enjoyed this video
will this work with 10% or 8% HCl , toilet bowl cleaner to be exact
I love your commentary you have a voice like an 8th grade English teacher I had. You make things simple and easy to understand. I saw somewhere you had a book could you tell me the name and cost thank you Dan Yost
Does anyone know if this also works for ammonia? Would really appreciate an answer!

Really? At 6 or greater molar?
Will this process also work for sulfuric acid acid?
please let me know if this purified HCL would be suitable for gold refining purpose
thank you
jeovanny viteri
gonzales huerta it would but it would be fairly weak
How long will this take having used equal parts 1000ml of each in an air sealed Yeti cooler?
thank you for sharing your info cooncentrating H2O2 with desicant is it valid

Hi, thanks for the video. The result that is very purified HCL can it be regarded as a 'food grade' HCL?
Take it to the next level. Add an equal molar amount of anhydrous calcium chloride to the crude muriatic acid just before sealing it up. I would surmise that additional hydrogen chloride would be disengaged and increase concentration of purified acid. very nice. i usually synthesize my chems to save money so this is helpful.
Awesome someone who explains!!
Great vid, my only complaint is the mono audio.
lol "Hoes or Lome depot"
what?! haha
My favorite pass time is looking for hoes at lome depot...wait what?
Thanks, you saved me from adding something already said! I had to comment, since I just took a swallow of Coke when he said that. Now I'm cleaning up the mess left after I spit it out on my keyboard and monitor.
How would you concentrate this? By boiling?
Boiling will actually decrease the acid's concentration, because hydrogen chloride, being a gas, will be driven out of solution by the heat.
Lorenzo Pacheco
What if you boil it in a retort or some other distillery device then?

Useful. Like a couple others I'm thinking desiccant too...
so Muriatic Acid is diluted or a weaker HCL?
No its 20% for azeotrope and he did this by a kind of distillation.
its a god awful title.....totally misleading.
Yes, the difference in the two is, reagent grade or 100% HCI is very clear like water. Muriatic acid has iron impurities in it, thus the slight yellow color.

No impurities in the acid product
Does this work for sulphuric acid?
Just look up "boiling the bat" and youll find instructions for sulfuric acid. Its much easier to concentrate than HCl
Can't i just boil it ?
its not only water in mixture
I read on the Journal of Chemistry Education that you can dehydrate hydrochloric acid with calcium chloride. Might try the same trick but add the muriatic acid to 100 grams of calcium chloride in the container. I would think you could get 7 Molar Reagent HCl or better.
unless reagent grade HCI dose not react with aluminum this does not work. the distilled water container contained 80 ml of ???? the muratic acid container still reacted with aluminum and the reagent grade hci did not
sooo if the pure HCL is in the water container...whats in the other container?(sorry couldn't hear well) and is this HCL good for making TATP? thanks!
Are you 14? or just edgy acetone peroxide kewl
are you 14, or do you just need to take a proper English class that teaches you grammar.
What was wrong with my grammar? Sulfuric acid is much easily available than hcl and can be concentrated a lot easily. Battery acid. Really easy to obtain
@TheHomeScientist very nice it at a nice humorous touch to it
