What is Florida's red tide, and where does it come from?

  • Red tide is nothing new to Florida. The Karenia brevis algae species can be harmful and even deadly to marine life, sending dead fish washing up on beaches and even posing a health threat to humans.
It is a separate organism from the cyanobacteria and lyngbya that affect other areas of the state, but can be fed by the same sort of pollutants and runoff. Here's what you need to know.
FOX 13 Tampa Bay brings you the important videos like breaking news, Tampa Bay weather, and local stories. But also plenty of fun stuff, like #WeLiveHere tips, the best of our archives, and all those 'only-in-Florida' stories.

Lake okeechobee is also a big contributor. The army corps of engineers always release water when the lake gets high then that flows through rivers and streams and straight to the ocean them it turns into red tide. The lake was a big fertilizer dumping site back in the day and the army thinks if they release water during hurricane season it will wash everything away

It's very likely a combination of things. With the high concentration of development along every single foot of waterfront property, from canals, to rivers, to streams, bays & Gulf, and with many, if not most, of these homes and condos having extensive formal landscaping with high nutrient and watering needs, it seems quite possible that this has had an impact on overall water quality considering the amount of runoff into the waterways on a daily basis.
With the population of Florida growing so rapidly, imagine the amount of sewage processing and landfill systems required to contain and process all the waste. I hope that we are keeping our infrastructure systems on pace with our growth.

Right now the State of Florida is being impacted by a Sahara Dust Storm . With satellite imagery it looks like smoke from a massive fire burning over millions of acres. The Sahara sand is like dust ... and the soil profile of this sand is exceptionally high in iron. Iron enhances the “bloom” effect as the fungal organisms require nitrates to reproduce. It could be a record red tide season this year by the Sahara stimulation being created as we speak.
It’s a connect the dots process in our natural environment ... and sometimes the dots can spell disaster .....

    This is rehearsed.
She starts asking what can we do?
    - guy says avoid fertilizer
To close she asks again what can we do?
    - guy says again to avoid fertilizer.
This is just propaganda. There is not honest News anymore 😢

Yes we do need a macro approach, we need to stop Mosaic corp, we need to make each county pay for their messes, and we all need to allow our septic systems to be inspected.

“Is there anything we can do personally” yes reduce animal consumption. Half of all plants we “fertilize” to grow are fed to livestock, and livestock waste is a main cause as well. It’s disgusting. Animal agriculture is the number one cause of habitat loss worldwide.

    • @kevindubose6964

Maybe we all just need to learn to eat dirt so we can save all of the plants and animals

    • @rickagfoster

@@kevindubose6964 It'd pay massive dividends just giving up beef alone. But yes going plant-based reduces environmental pressure many times over. Just can't stand to see the red tide happen worse every year then listen to people somehow rationalize eating on average 3X the global average of beef. They're free to do what they want but damn at least try to help. Sad.
