  • As I know so many artists struggle with how to draw an outline for a mandala that you wish to paint or draw, I thought I'd put together a few videos where I will show you how to draw one.
    All the outlines are shown in real time, so you really can draw along at the same time as me.
    The outlines have been drawn on 20cm x 20cm canvas boards which have been painted using black acrylic paint and you will see me using a Stabilo white soft pastel pencil. You will also need a compass, a protractor and a ruler
    After posting this video if ever I create a painting using one of these outlines I will post the template number in the title i.e. A, B or C
    You can find my video 'How To Draw An Outline For A Dot Painting Mandala With Artist Janette Oakman A,B,C Great 4 Beginners' by following this link • How To Draw An Outline...

    Janette Oakman loves to bring together her love of geometric art with her new love of dot painting. Loving the work of many others, especially indigenous dot painting . People have used mandalas for hundreds of years and they have been made in so many different ways with so many different materials.
    .
    Some people create mandalas using a stick or a pencil or paintbrush, today Janette Oakman has used acrylic rods and other tools as paintbrushes that have little balls on the end.
    Wikipedia - Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms sometimes, though not always, placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective (non-representational) compositions.
    Wikipedia - Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image
    Janette Oakman loves to try out many different art forms, so do check her other videos as you might see something else that you'd like to try and wasn't sure how to do it.. There is even a video on how to paint with teabags!
    Psychic Artist Janette Oakman lives in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk but she travels around the UK demonstrating and teaching mediumship and psychic art. If you would be interested in having her come along and do a demonstration and workshop in your church or centre, please do contact her as she would love to hear from you.

      I think I was probably born creating zantangles, but I called it having to doodle with my new pen ha ha I used to spend hours sitting there making up all these designs

    Thank you! All your videos are so helpful. I'm also going to order the Stabilo pencil and give it a try. I've been pretty happy with the General Charcoal pencil but this one looks even easier to work with.

      My pleasure I love helping to inspire people :) I love my Stabilo pencil... for some strange reason lots of pencils that are expensive don't even feel like a normal pencil in your hand, where this one does so another great reason why I love it. Make sure you buy their own pencil sharpener as well as many people don't realise that not all pastel pencils work in makes belonging to other manufacturers.. I have a few, one I keep in my compass, one I keep for drawing, one in my large compass and a spare one in case I need to change one quickly.... (okay and 8 more in a box ha ha)

    Extremely helpful thank you!! Would it be easier with a stencil?? I am a complete beginner and can't seem to get it right no matter what.

    • @JanetteOakman
      @JanetteOakman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with stencils is, there are only so many different ones and of course the cost involved. Learn to draw your own and you open your world up a lot more. Plus side as well, wow you do you feel proud you've drawn your own.

      @@JanetteOakman Thank you SO much for that feedback!! I really do appreciate it and I totally get what you're saying, no point in trying to fit into an already overloaded box. I've just started dotting as lost all my art equipment in transit so feel it focuses the mind. I adore your work so much and this is the sort of thing that should be taught in schools so well done you!! Thanks again for being a great teacher!!

    Hi Janette :-) ... This is a good video, and as usual when you are speaking in your video's i answer you lol... I loved the way you said about the putty rubber being a good stress reliever..My answer .. Janette .. yoooou get stressed, i don't think so except when you are using a drill. That was sooooo funny .. you and your friend trying to drill holes .. If i get chance later i will F.B message you and let you know of my 'bargain ' i was over the moon x

    • @JanetteOakman
      @JanetteOakman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes I have to get up in front of a room or hall of people and draw portraits using charcoal, trust me my other hand holds that putty rubber lmao it keeps me grounded ha ha only problem is, you can get to the point where you don't want to draw unless it is in your hand! Glad you liked the video, I plan on creating a few like this as there is nothing worse than a blank canvas and so if I can help people feel inspired, that would be a good day at the office :) I shall look forward to hearing about your bargain!

    As someone with a limited budget I appreciate your videos. Your videos save me from buying pre-made stencils. Can your stencils be adjusted for dot art on stones?

    • @JanetteOakman
      @JanetteOakman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't dot stones, but if I was to try, this is what I would do.... I would draw the outline that I wanted to use using a soft pastel pencil on grease proof paper and then I would turn it over so that the pencil lines were on the stone side... then I would go over the stencil lines again using a soft pastel pencil.... by rights the chalk should come off on the stone x

    Thank you so much for all of your tutorials. I have a question. Do you mind telling me what kind of pencil you use? I couldn’t make out what you were saying. I’ve been using General’s white charcoal pencils but it’s so hard to get the marks off good. I bought some white slate pencils from Amazon, but they won’t fit in my compass. They’re easier to clean up though. Again, thank you so much!

    • @JanetteOakman
      @JanetteOakman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Melanie, I am using a white Stabilo soft pastel pencil. It is very easy to remove with either a putty rubber (kneadable eraser) or you can put a cotton wool bud dipped in plain cold water to wash it away. I had the same problem with regards to compasses, this is the only make I could fit inside a compass and even then I have to use a really cheap compass, all my expensive brand name compasses just laughed lol Make sure you have the right pencil sharpener as well, always buy the brand name to match the pencil as for example, my Derwent or Faber Castelle pencils don't fit inside the Stabilo pencil sharpener and vice versa x

    • @melaniegee
      @melaniegee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Janette Oakman thank you! And thanks for the tip on the pencil sharpener. My Generals pencils came with a pencil sharpener and so did my slate pencils. But I would’ve never thought they weren’t interchangeable! So thank you again!

    • @JanetteOakman
      @JanetteOakman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No problem... another tip, if it gets hot and the soft pastels get too soft, just put them in the fridge lol
