If I may make a suggestion on finding the center of anything that is fairly flat. I was trained in the 1960's as a commercial artist ( back in the day before it was called graphic arts on computers). Lay a straight edge ( either a ruler or anything staight) on the surface from one diagonal corner to the other and draw a faint line near what you think will be the center. Then do the same on the other diaganol corners. You will then have a cross which is the dead center. Two simple, quick, accurate movements without the need to use a measuring tool. For a round surface like a rock you can use a string to do approximately the same thing. I hope this might help. When I was working we had to get things done fast and any trick of the trade helped. 😊
I learned this, too! Fast and accurate, without having to tediously mess with measuring and making sure your numbers are correct!. I also remember using this technique to draw perpendicular lines in geometry. 😄
I just started this a week ago gave up like 8 times!!! I swear you make me come back every time because it’s all practice and we all kno it takes patience to make perfection!! Thank you soo much for all your support and patience doing this for us!!! Xoxox
Thank you for this video. You have a pleasing, soothing voice and demeanor. Thank you for following your calling. You’re blessing many w/ your talent. 💕
Thank you for sharing this beginner's video. Your clear, simple instructions have helped me more than you'll ever know. I'm no longer fearful of screwing up an expensive canvas, opting to gesso some bigger flat refrigerator magnets for practicing my dotting. Thank you, again!
You make it look so easy😁 I've had the supplies for months now but never had the courage to actually start as I know my first one would be a disaster! so now, following the inspiration you have given me, I'm gonna start my new hobby.... today ❤️
Go for it, Pat!! I often feel the same way, and it comes from my perfectionist personality; I'm afraid to try things if I don't know I'll be good (perfect?) at it. :)
I started trying mandala dot art on rocks with my adult kids. We did it by using a video which wasn't really meant for beginners. Got a fairly decent result and we loved the process. However, I am a hopeless perfectionist when it comes to trying to do art of any kind. So began to seek more education from books and other artists videos. This beginner video is the first one to give me sufficient info that I can now move on with confidence in this medium. Thank you so much. Will watch all your other videos as I progress.
that is wonderful to hear. I probably should do some updating...this was a long time ago. I have learned a few other tips myself :) The art community is very helpful. Welcome :) I really feel like it is wonderful time spent.. We love painting in our home and friends love coming to visit and paint with us.
This was so insightful. Most other videos I've watched, they're too concerned with waving and clacking their freshly painted fingernails! I enjoyed the entire tutorial, and, thank you for the option of NOT following lines all the time! I go more by my feel (cause I'm a rebel like that). I'm painting my first rock as I was listening and watching your tutorial. They will now be part of my water feature (my design and build)!
I am so glad this video is still being enjoyed. I keep saying I want to try and update it and use a better camera etc, but it got the basics out there to share. Your water project design sounds fun. I would love to hear more
I've noticed that people either enjoy me talking out the process. Or they don't like hearing me talk. That really feels like it's fifty fifty. But I have always felt a video is difficult to see really. What the person is doing or thinking... especially with design work. Also I feel like it helps to say things like. I'm pushing down harder on my brush. Or now. I'm picking up the brush. Cause you can't really see that in the video. I've tried to make that my goal to do in every video

Awesome , its beautiful!!! Thank you very much, just got interesting in dotting. Cool tutorial. Kisses from Brazil.
Your talent and the time you take to help us learn such an enjoyable hobby is very much appreciated. Thank you for all you do to help us grow this craft.
Thank you for posting this excellent video. I have the supplies but keep watching video's to get the hang of it. I think it is time to start. I love the small canvases for starting projects!
i am a preschool teacher retiree. and i just discover rock art. i post my first vlog. and the reaction from mmom and kids is so inspiring. so i find you. you're a big help. thank you.
Thank you Miranda for this very helpful video and also showing us that anyone can make a mistake but it’s not the end ,me I would have stressed out but now I know so thank you 🙏
Thank you Your voice is soothing. I have had black canvases and MOST of what you showed here But they have been sitting HERE since covid-19 started due to having NO IDEA of where to start. Thank you so much for sharing your time with us! GOD bless stay healthy
Miranda, little hint, you can find center of that little square canvas, by drawing a line from corner to corner on both sides... =) Thank you for the class on dotting 🙂
Thanks again for your time with this video, I think it was great that you made mistakes here because it shows that anyone can make mistakes and it gave you an opportunity to show us how to correct these errors. Well done Miranda
I’ve been watching a lot of these types of videos lately looking for a new craft to do. This is definitely the BEST one so far. Thanks for teaching me!
I live on the north side of Olympic National Park, the Olympic Mountains, west of Seattle and south across the strait from Victoria BC CA. It is a glacier area and we have tons of river rocks of what we call Potatoes.... So they are just outside my front door :) So, yep time to go stone gathering :)
Thanks for sharing this tutorial. As soon as I get my kit and the stones I'll start with this gorgeous mandala and see my first project. God bless you!
Excellent video. I started watching a different beginner mandala painting video but after five minutes I, um, decided that I, um, could not, um continue, um, watching.
been wanting to try this for a long time, thanks for a really good tutorial, I do believe I can do that now. thanks also for showing how to fix errant drops, or bleeds.
Excellent video for beginners Miranda and those of us who like to refresh the basics in our mind. Well done for keeping in mind that not everyone can afford to go out and spend lots of money on paints etc. to start with.
Apparently I was having a senior moment when I rediscovered this video. I had seen it before, but it was new to me again. Something to be said for losing ones mind. Everything is new again.
I heard a joke which I repeat... When you start losing your memory you can buy yourself a present, wrap it, put it in a closet, and when you find it you will be happily surprised....
Fantastic tutorial thank you so much. Im very new and struggling with getting the right consistency with the paints That i have . After watching your video I have decided to invest in some Decoart Americana paints , hopefully my work then will be as neat as yours . Thank you x
Thank you for the reply to my previous comment about tiles. 😀 I love that there are options out there that don’t require using multi surface or enamel paints!
Yes...You can deal the tiles after to protect them.I think a lot of people are using them as coasters. That way if you use the multi-service you can wash them and they can get wet.
So nice of you to say :) I never thought of myself as a teacher...I feel like I am sharing a love with good friends, in hopes they get as much out of it as I do!! You all are awesome!
Thanks for this. I don't know how I missed this tutorial. I thought I'd been through all your videos...apparently not. So, it was a help, (as all your tutorials are to me). I've moved on to some more difficult ones, but I have trouble keeping the dots close together. This practice helped with that. Thanks again.🙋🌴💞
My first Madala I threw into the river, the second I figured wasn't perfect but would put it in my rock garden but the third I am quite happy with. Such a relaxing craft and your video's started me on this art form. Using the brushes will take a bit more time but trying.
oh no. I hope someone finds your lovely river gift someday. Brushes do take a bit more practice as with anything new. But it is still a relaxing journey :)
Love this video, I love to paint on rocks, and I haven't in awhile. I am into making Junk Journals, and mixed media. Getting ready to play with paint pours as well as this. I just purchased a kit with the tools and stencils and such to do the mandella. I have tons of rocks I have collected while on vacation. Anyway new subbie here, would love to be Crafty TH-cam friends, tfs. Can't wait till my kit arrives.
I did it 😊 and I must say I am very happy for it being my first one. I did it on a black painted canvas board. I do need to get my dots closer together and maybe some dotting tools with flat bottoms (like dowels) as that worked better for me than crochet hooks or dotter. Thank you for the easy tutorial. Plus also to show how to fix boo boos as I made a few
Something that rather threw me for someone who does this on a very regular basis. How to find the centre point of a not so square, square. To start, the measurements taken were out of sinque, unless you want that, but I gather the actual centre was being sort. If you had placed a thin piece of thread from corner to corner, make a light mark at the approx centre along the thread, then repeat this from the opposite side corners . Secure your thread with some sticky tape directly on your work surface. You will find the centre is then accurate. I hope that is of use to you and it will certainly save time and undesirable inaccurate measuring. Thank you for your tut, it is nice to know what is available for this craft.

I am a strong visual learner and this is perfect. Love your style and your voice is perfect! :) Thanks so much.
Wonderful! I am so glad you have most of the supplies, so you can just paint away :) I am very visual as well but for those who are not and are more audio...I try to speak my mind...lol I am learning how to better talk through my thought process :) Thank you so much for your kind words
Hi Miranda , I really do appreciate your tutorials , And your work is Really awesome , got me thinking its really a hard work and passion added with lot of love for your hobbies to make time for . ❤
I am a beginner dotter. A friend of mine who is doing beautiful rock paintings said she learned from your TH-cam station. I have a question for you. I have ordered a flat steel grey gravestone for me Mother. My son has the idea of doing some dotting on the stone. Any suggestions for what type of paint we should use. Thanks so much. You're a great teacher! I love it that you don't get all rattled by making a mistake. I think that's what stops a lot of people from doing art...when someone is uptight and pressure us! Thanks again!
First let me thank you for this very helpful and informative video! I do want to say one thing, though in regards to using the cap from your paint to dot. I'm new to dotting but I'm not new to painting at all. I think this isn't a good idea to do (unless it's only for a few dots) because the longer the cap is off, the more your paint inside loses it's original fluidity from air reaching it. The more you do this, the thicker your paint will likely become. Thank you especially for explaining how to enlarge the dots when using the stylus. I prefer the stylus over the flat dotting tool but was having trouble figuring out how to symmetrically enlarge a dot. Thank you!
So glad I found this wonderful tutorial. I would love to try a simple mandala on a tumbler. Maybe a few small ones placed at specific areas of the tumbler. TU very much for an excellent teaching video!

Super helpful! Thank you!
I sent you an email :)
I’ve wondered how to start, and what you do if you make a mistake. I’ve never done mandala YET. I plan to get supplies and start very soon. Thank you.
Welcome to an exciting new adventure! 🙏🏻😊
Thank you!
Yes the cap off too long will make "boogers" haha Gross
So glad I found this wonderful tutorial. I would love to try a simple mandala on a tumbler. Maybe a few small ones placed at specific areas of the tumbler. TU very much for an excellent teaching video!
You are so welcome!Thank you for taking the time to say hi!! :)
