It’s so hard to choose a curriculum. Last year I did horizons for my child and she hated it. Struggled and it was very advanced and boring for her. This year I chose sonlight and rightstart for the math. I heard great things about rightstart.. especially for children that struggle or have special needs. I also bought TGTB to work on during the summer, this way she catches up and doesn’t forget anything before starting sonlight. We will see how it goes.. I hope sonlight works but if it doesn’t we can return it and go with TGTB.
And I find its so hard to know until you actually TRY it with your child too! That was my main take away, that my kids work best with TGTB. No curriculum is perfect, but for me TGTB works. Although if seen some stories in level 1 TGTB that I remember reading from pre k Sonlight 🤔 so I know the Sonlight literature package is strong! We are taking a LONG summer break this year! With the whole covid 19 we've been pushing forward mostly without breaks since Christmas. We are 5 weeks from the end of the year and I am taking one day at a time 😬🤨😁
Interesting. I have to say that many years ago, when I was first starting out I got the sonlight pre-k or k curriculum (I don’t actually remember which). I very quickly decided I didn’t like it as well. BUT fast forward to late grade school-middle school and we have been using it successfully for history and science and am considering using it all the way through for at least history. I JUST discovered TGATB and downloaded several language arts and cursive and I am really excited to try it out. It looks SO good to me.
I love that! This is what I love about homeschooling is that we CAN change our minds to suit age and stage... Now this was just my first impression and I have been on TGTB for almost 3 years now (primer, K and 1st grade) and all is going well. I'm totally open to trying it in the future if the need arises, and to be honest it's great to know that there ARE faith based curriculums out there! Well done on your journey in my head I'm imagining my kids to be mostly self directed by middle school is that realistic? 🤔😂
TGTB looks like a really great curriculum. I am looking forward to trying it out this summer for language arts and cursive. I had never even heard of it before this year, apparently I’ve been living under a rock!
new to your channel! so glad I stumbled onto your channel. i'm using TGATB for language arts this year and we did BookShark(similar to sonlight) last year. we loved both so far!
I chose Sonlight, as wanted a curriculum that did not conflict with my Christian faith.
Hi, does TGTB conflict with Christianity? I heard it is Christian based.
TGTB doesn’t conflict with Christianity 😊
we've been doing Sonlight for 5 years and now looking into TGTB.
I hope you find one that suits you! Print out the language arts (it's free) and do a few lessons and you'll be able to see pretty quick it it's a good fit! Xxx
Why are you switching from sonlight do you not like it? I’m trying sonlight with my daughter in the fall and bought TGTB kinder primer and math k to do in the summer so she won’t forget
@@dominique573n9 I like both but I had a daughter who was not as much of an auditory learner so I switched from an ALL lit based curriculum. But I did love Sonlight. We still read a lot but not for every subject like before. We are using TGTB for just LA & HW not Science or History.
You should definitely try the Sonlight program when your son is a couple years older. I actually bought the pre k Sonlight program a few years ago and had the exact same experience as you as far as not challenging him enough and we breezed through it in like 3 months lol. Now this year after not going back to Sonlight until this year... we decided to give it a try again for second grade and man I man it is very great. I am very impressed and surprised :) we are having a completely different experience with the second grade level...:) I just want to encourage you to take it one year at a time and yes if tgatb works great then stay with it but if you decide against it Sonlight deserves another chance :)
Mary Weikel thanks so much! I think you might be right. I'm totally open to changing again in the future, for now TGTB suits us BUT as we grow I'd say I'll bop around a bit each year and feel my way through it. good to hear your experience and how youre liking it now. xxx
We bought the sonlight Pre-K with my youngest and decided to switch to the good and the beautiful after a while we just finished the Pre-K book with the good and the beautiful and now we are just using sonlight more as a morning basket and we get to it when we have time. I would hate to not use it but not everything holds my daughters attention very well.
Yes! We kinda used our like that too, interestingly some of the stories from my son light box were actually in TGTB curriculum 1st grade which was interesting!
Just came across your channel! Love your personality! Weve been considering sonlight! Thanks for the review

Two questions. 1. What extra activities and clubs are your kids in to socialize them and prevent from making them awkward. 2. What are some things that you wish you could do or had the time to do to help socialize them.
Hey thanks for asking! Probably a long answer BUT in my personal experience my kids act more appropriately in social circles then many of their peers BECAUSE they are Homeschooled.
No one throws a child into a pool and expects them to "pick it up"
No one sends a child into a stables expecting the child to figure out how to ride
In the two above examples, adults usually instruct and guide, then allow the child to try it out, then will feedback and encourage, finally practice is important for any new skill.
"socialising" is the activity of being with others, and learning to act appropriately
When I as a mom am around when my kids are interacting with others, I can correct and encourage appropriate behaviour. Teaching th how to act in certain situations and BEING there when those situations arise to be an emotional. Support for my kids has been such a blessing.
As a family, pre covid we were always mixing and interacting with many age groups, my kids would play with kids of my friends multiple times a week, my two middle kids had youth group twice a week which is time away from mom which is important too, wherever we go I prepare the kids with what behaviour is appropriate and what to do if something goes wrong. If they are with me I will correct behaviour or step in if they are not appropriate or if it's an activity that they are away from me for, I will always ask very pointed questions to encourage appropriate behavior.
Alot of awkwardness comes from NOT picking up social ques, or nervousness of not understanding what's going on. Equipping our kids for life is our job, including socialising not only with people that they enjoy spending time with, but also people who maybe aren't as "fun", like being polite to shop workers, bus drivers, museum staff etc.
As for exactly what we as a family do
Forest school with other Homeschoolers once a week
Youth group 2-3 times a week
Football 2-3 times a week
Playdates going to peoples houses at least once a week
Playdates with someone coming to us or meeting at a park once every week or two
Daily interaction with all age groups when we are out and about
We also had a piano teacher come once a week so one on one's with someone other then a parent was happening
@@thatirishschoolhouse7149 thank you very much! What social cues have you noticed are often missed and how do you correct them? That is what I’m afraid of as I may miss them too
Nothing really comes to mind, I suppose eye contact, turn taking, listening and responding to what has been said (proper conversation) recently there was an issue in the park where my sons friend was in the wrong and others were getting mad at the friend. My son, out of loyalty to the friend stood up for him despite feeling he was wrong too, it was a unique situation that I couldn't have prepared him for but we talked it over in great detail and he now has a "blueprint" as such if a similer situation arises of multiple responses that would all be appropriate. We can't ever know all the situations our kids will be in but if we give them the proper tools they will do great!
I am doing SonLight but only HBL, and I don’t requested the instructor’s guide. I am reading book by book and We analyze them naturally just talking about them. We are using TGTB for Language arts but I find K level pretty dense for K level. The rest of knowledge fields (we don’t split the knowledge in “subjects”) we use miscellaneous material I find in the internet. I think for K level is more than enough; I am trying to give my child all the possible time to play.
Just found your channel and I love you! 😍Thank you for the giggle at the start 📦😅 We are in Scotland and are in our second year of using TGATB resources (mainly the science units) but we use Story of the World for our history spine and then select readers and family ‘read alouds’ to tie in with the time period/context each week which I guess is similar in approach to Sonlight but without the fun box for the kids to play in and the organisation! Would love to buy hard copy curriculum from America but the postage costs are scary. Hope you are having a lovely summer!xxx
Oh my I mean postage is such a waste 😭 we went to Scotland for our summer holidays, Friars Carse in Douglas and Galloway it was lovely! Hi from Ireland, and well done you for homeschooling your kids momma!!!
As I rewatched this video I was wondering, have you thought of/tried choosing the 2-3 books that your son wanted to read and just reading more more pages instead of doing a smaller amount of 4-6 books?
We use TGATB as well. It is our first year homeschooling, my girls love this curriculum. They are in 2nd and 5th grade. I have a feeling we will be using TGATB for many years to come.
I feel like I’m the only one that’s underwhelmed by TGATB pre-k. Too rushed for my child unfortunately.
We are still searching for a good fit 😕
That's fair enough! Every child is different and different curriculum work well for different personalities! That's the beauty in homeschooling... You can change to suit your kids needs! All the best! X
That Irish Schoolhouse Luckily I was able to post in the Facebook group and other moms were really helpful I think my little ones just not ready 🤷🏻♀️
Those are the 2 curriculums I am trying to decide between. TGTB looks awesome!
Level 1-5 of language arts are FREE on TGTB website, although my son was at primer K level last year so I printer the sample pages and did two lessons with him... I knew then it was the right fit. Try printing out the samples 💕💕💕
My 5 year old Loves The Good and The Beautiful Math and language arts! He will ask to do another lesson when we finish.
I know! Isn't it SO wonderful when they're longing to continue learning!
where can i buy TGTB books? how?
goodandbeautiful.com you can get hard copy or PDF version
Do you live in the states or U.K? I have used TG and beautiful but since I have too much going on at home did not work for us just yet. It may in the future. Currently, my child does ABeka home videos just the phonics and writing lesson. I do the other subjects. I just needed someone else to do the teaching while I supervised and helped, for now. I've done every subject before with a baby on two previous occasions but this time I just did not want to do all that. So anyways. your seem very fun. Good for changing quickly some things just don't work for us.
We are in Ireland! Great to do what fits you at the moment, some seasons are slower then others at least they're still moving forward well done!
Great review. Love your humor.
Thanks a mill!
New subscriber here! 😍 you’re so cute! I’ve been leaning toward the good and the beautiful
Do you know if there is any non religious curriculums available in Ireland ?
Hi Lorna!
So far I haven't found ANY homeschool curriculums outside of USA, I'm assuming because homeschooling isn't as big a thing over here? If you wanted to follow the "school curriculum" then you could download booklists from any chosen school and then contact the publishers requesting teachers guides. That seemed too complicated for me but it certainly can be done. I think homeschool.ie follows the Irish curriculum but I'm not sure exactly how it works RE physical books. If you find one let me know!!! Xxx
Well this video was very helpful to me because now I have 2places to check out for a curriculum I just started homeschool last week and I know you don't have to have one but it would sure ease my mind so will check them both out 😄👍
Congratulations! Its such a worthwhile thing to do you WONT regret it! Good luck on your Homeschool journey! Xxx
New subscriber!!! Your a hoot !!! Love your accent !!! We are doing the good and the beautiful pre k but looked into sunlight when he gets older so I’m glad you made the video!
Thanks! It's not a super strong Irish accent! I hope you're enjoying it!
Thanks for sharing...love your channel...we use and love The Good and the Beautiful..it's been a blessing to our family.
This will be our 3rd year using it and I haven't looked back... 👌
Thanks for the video! Random question- what mascara do you use??? Love the lashes!!!
Aww thanks I appreciate that! I actually get individual eyelash extensions #donttellanyone 😉
I found this so interesting! we will be moving back to Ireland soon with our 3yo and 2 yo and I would really love to homeschool, it's been something we have been talking about but we need to learn more about it and figure out how it could work for us! I'll be binge watching your videos now so don't mind me lol :)
Great video.
Love Sonlight ❤️
