God this gets me every time. We don't always get it right in the uk but when we took this song to number one in the charts in 1980 we gave a great singer the recognition he deserved for taking a classic song and making it even better.
Don's version of "Crying" is so moving and so heart-breaking that you literally want to curl up in a ball, pull the covers over you and cry your eyes out. The somber strumming of the guitar, the sadness in Don's voice and those strings in the background make this one of the greatest ballads ever, in my opinion. Roy must be proud. RIP, man in the black shades.
I love Mr Orbison's version as well but Don McLean's is the one I remember from my childhood and now it breaks my heart every time I hear it. Absolutely brilliant!
Don Mclean is one of those exceptional artists who seem to get better with age, check out his 2007 versions of his old hits............ the older you get,the better you get just like summer wine.
This was my song when I was young. Don M and I are the same age. It was like he put words in my heart. I was crying too. But six months later, we got back together, married. Celebrated our 50th anniversary this year! We, neither one, wanted to cry any more. Never give up.
McClean is one of the most under-rated song writers and vocalist in modern music history. Its a shame that most people know nothing more about him than American Pie. Talent of his measure is hardly scene anymore.
I just discovered this song and I've listened to it a thousand times. Such sensitivity...what a wonderful melody...and since I have my own reasons to cry tonight, I shall cry along...
I love the song, and many artists have done it great justice. There are many “coverages” of “Crying,” but the best one, and I’m including Orbison’s version, is by Don McLean. I don’t know exactly what it is in his voice, but he “sells” the song the best. And of all the different times he has sung it, McLeans best version is this one. I’ve heard him sing it many times in concert, and although he always does a good job, this recording here is his best version.
This song will always remind me the night I met the man I loved and dated for four years and realized he was wearing an engagement ring with the girl he has met only six months before...I almost died that night. And I thought I would never stop crying after that.
Next in line to the Big O himself (Roy),I'd have to say Don Mclean nailed this song to perfection (man! those high notes rang out!). He definitely has earned my respect for his musical talent, from American Pie, to Vincent, to all his other less known but still as amazing compositions.
this is a wonderful song.. and says what it is to break up with someone and still love that person. I married a man, he was a singer, he sang this song at gigs and even when we were together I still cried when he did so, and now that we are apart, I cry even more, especially when hearing this song, even though I know we cannot be together I will always love you ALLEN.. but "you and I travel to the beat of a different drum" love always Your Jeanie
It's rare that that I can be equally moved by two renditions of the same song, by two such different voices as Don's and Roy's. from now on whenever I hear either of them sing it, I'll think for just a second of the other one.
Love this song & Don's version. I put it up there #2 next to Roy's as no one can touch his. This 1 is still BEAUTIFUL I just realy enjoy his music, he's 1 of our many GREATS. 2:15
Such a beautiful song. Reminds me of 1988. A young woman from the USA, whom I had been dating in London for a few months, had flown back home to Utah. The following morning, I heard this song on the radio. I thought of her, and, with a heavy heart...started to cry. Memories!
I saw an interview with Roy Orbison one time and he said that this was one of his favorite covers of any of his songs. He was asked if it was better than the original. He said he would not go that far, but he said it was close.
wonderful. I heard this music many times but in this ocasion is so special and today when I remember that person touch my hand so tight I would like to cry.....
I've always been fond of the late, great Roy Orbison; he was an amazing talent. And I've heard both versions of Crying back to back. I just prefer Don Mclean's version the best. Something in the way Don sings it makes it sound so soulful and plaintive. It strikes a sharp chord in my heart that Orbison just can't quite accomplish. I'm NOT saying Orbison was an inferior singer; far from it! It's just the way Don sings it hits me more in an emotional way.
It's all about the arrangement! Orbison was one of rock's finest voices ever but the tempo was a bit fast to be emotional and the music track was too (Orbison-style) thumpy. Everything about McLean's version is spot on!
On this day in 1981 {May 30th} Don McLean performed his covered version of Roy Orbison's "Crying"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'... The song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on January 18th, 1981 at position #37; eight weeks later it would peak at #5 {for 3 weeks} and it spent 18 weeks on the Top 100... And on March 8th, 1981 it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and for the 4 weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those four weeks was "What Kind Of Fool" by Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb... Between 1971 and 1981 he had nine records on the Hot Top 100 chart; two made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "American Pie" for 4 weeks on January 9th, 1972... Donald McLean III will celebrate his 72nd birthday this coming October 2nd {2017}... * On April 26th, 1981 his "Crying" was at #34, and one position lower at #35 was his covered version of the Skyliners' "Since I Don't Have You"...
imagine living 47 years to feel what this song means.....being replaced in a heartbeat, never in love with another women,as she goes on with her life like we never existed....and i sit here alone
Simplemente AMO a este hombre hermoso, DON MCLEAN por cantar esta cancion, y lo hace maravillosamente hasta hoy en dia. desde Chile para ti DON un SALUDO.
I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while But when I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight When you stopped to say "Hello" And though you wished me well, you couldn't tell That I'd been cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone Alone and crying, crying, crying cry-i-ing It's hard to understand that the touch of your hand Can start me crying

RIP, man in the black shades.
Unfortunately, Roy stated that he "hated" this version. I think he deep down knew that it was better than his.
one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life
This song always breaks my heart in the most wonderful way. Don McLean's is my favorite version, too.
He sings it so well! Love it!
I love Mr Orbison's version as well but Don McLean's is the one I remember from my childhood and now it breaks my heart every time I hear it. Absolutely brilliant!
Don McLean does this one so right...soulful, passionate and heartfelt.
This song has haunted me for years...Don Mclean's voice is classic.
One of the most underrated and unappreciated singer/songwriters ever.
He has an understated, sincere style and makes it look effortless & easy. A beautiful version.
Don Mclean is one of those exceptional artists who seem to get better with age, check out his 2007 versions of his old hits............

perfect voice, perfect song. beautiful blend.
Hahahahahahah
Man...such passion! Don McLean owns this song.
McClean is one of the most under-rated song writers and vocalist in modern music history. Its a shame that most people know nothing more about him than American Pie. Talent of his measure is hardly scene anymore.
This is a magnificent cover of Crying, Don Really hitds that big note at the end, It is chilling.
From pain and tears,
growth appears.
What a great song.
I just discovered this song and I've listened to it a thousand times. Such sensitivity...what a wonderful melody...and since I have my own reasons to cry tonight, I shall cry along...
The way the song builds is absolutely spectacular. I LOVE Larry Butler's dramatic production on this song and Don McLean's vocals are superb.
I can repeat this song over and over, so calming.

I get goose bumps every time I hear this beautiful version. Thanks folkman123 and Don
I agree. Mclean's version is more emotional than Orbison's original
This song will always remind me the night I met the man I loved and dated for four years and realized he was wearing an engagement ring with the girl he has met only six months before...I almost died that night. And I thought I would never stop crying after that.
I dont care how old this gets, it will always be my standard favorite

I adore this version...can't get enough of it ...
wow..never heard him sing this before. Why are we listening to Roy? This is the one to listen to!! Excellent!

I just realy enjoy his music, he's 1 of our many GREATS. 2:15
i generally dislike people covering other folks material, but this is exceptional
+Colin Watts Nah Come on. Roy eventually bettered it when he re-recorded it with kd lang in 1987.
Agreed,, love Don's cover....
I feel exactly the same way!
Don hit #5 in Billboard, 3-21-81. Hard to believe that it never got airplay on WLS-AM. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!
What a beautiful cover !!
never get tired of hearing it ...

Um clássico nunca morre! Belíssimo!
Márcia - Portugal
wonderful. I heard this music many times but in this ocasion is so special and today when I remember that person touch my hand so tight I would like to cry.....

Blessed are every man that cries and sings the love. Because is just one of them that I love.

i agree he put his whole soul into this song GREAT
He put more emotions.

@@tonyginnetti5828 True... the tempo really leaned into the emotion for McLean... plus those full voiced, wailing, "Crying"s help A LOT!

imagine living 47 years to feel what this song means.....being replaced in a heartbeat, never in love with another women,as she goes on with her life like we never existed....and i sit here alone
the first no.1 ever that wasn't shown on top of the pops since it first began in 1964 and that is such a shame.
beautiful, sad ,so full of memories, life in asong .
all a say is that music like this will allways stand the test of time
Simplemente AMO a este hombre hermoso, DON MCLEAN por cantar esta cancion, y lo hace maravillosamente hasta hoy en dia.
desde Chile para ti DON un SALUDO.
I cant say he has the best male voice in music, but he's really good
Beautiful cover by Don. I'm so glad I found this. Great song.
Remarkable rendition of the Orbison classic, Country #6 in March '81
I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But when I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
When you stopped to say "Hello"
And though you wished me well, you couldn't tell
That I'd been cry-i-i-i-ng over you, cry-i-i-i-ng over you
Then you said "so long". left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying cry-i-ing
It's hard to understand that the touch of your hand
Can start me crying
I bought this 45 as a kid at GC Murphy's when it came out back in the late 70's.
So so much love this
