Take a look at the end of the Bayeux Tapestry, you'll see two plebs running away from the battle with arrows in their eyes. By the time you calculate the distance from the horse traps and the top of the ridge upon the English fought you'll see that it is outside the killing range of the Norman bow or illegal crossbow.

I expected better from the Smithsonian. The battle did not last more than 5 hours unless you ignore 3 of the 4 early sources. Only William of Jumièges(WJ) said that the battle lasted all day. The Bayeux Tapestry (BT), the Carmen and William of Poitiers point to a fairly major skirmish followed by the "main event". Only the Carmen puts the time of Harold's death at Vespers. The BT does not time stamp the event but it comes towards the end of the Tapestry. However, if you go by WJ, and the Carmen and apply them to the BT then Harold's death is around Vespers. Please do better next time.
Most modern historians agrees that the Battle started around 9:00/9:30 am ( it was the fashion ) and lasted until 6:00 pm, pre-twilight moment, since it was in October 1066 ! Harold Godwinson had about 8000 men and William had brought with him, about 7000 men, including the Britany warriors, however he had a few thousand horses, which surely made a difference.
Harold did not die via arrow to the eye. No credible historian believes that anymore. Plus, this bares no resemblance at all to the actual battle. Shield wall anyone?
