I'm a guitar player, and I get so much from your lessons because you really explain what your thought process is and how to approach real world scenarios, as opposed to "these are the notes that are played on the record". Love it, keep it up!
Technique 1 + Technique 2 = AWESOME SAUCE BASS SOLOS'! Check out this bass lesson where I reveal this killer formula! th-cam.com/video/juoiLkiMNIc/w-d-xo.html
I must compliment you on your teaching style. The way you explain these concepts, they not only begin to explain their own fundamentals but also inspire all sorts of explorations of each concept. Best of all, you make it so easy to understand. Wonderful, and thank you!
Just checked out your website and the first lesson I looked at 'The modes revealed' is quite simply superb. No teacher has ever explained it so well to me. Absolute respect and appreciation.
Thanks for these lessons man . I dont play guitar let alone bass guitar but i play piano/ keyboard . I am finding your lessons so invaluable and very applicable to the piano . I have such a newfound respect for my piano because of your music lessons
Best video I've seen from Scott so far. It all just clicked for me: I can hear the sequences in bass runs but never had a way to understand them. He's right about practicing these intervals and they will come into your playing. I'd been practicing alternative fingerings for scales, then, a few days later, I changed the way I play a favourite line to stretch out my hand a bit more. I realised what I'd done spent the rest of the day playing songs with alternative fingering.
I miss this era of SBL, been following since the start and these are the lessons I always come back to. The info is so to the point and it’s captured so well
This video blew my mind...ive been in such a rut lately with my bass soloing and you explained this in such a clear and concise way. Thank you Scott...time to practice and apply!
Excellent! I have practiced intervals for years but no one ever suggested mixing between "linear lines". Really adds a lot of texture to an otherwise pedestrian solo. Great great lesson! Thank you!
Practicing intervals, up and down, along with your scale/mode exercise is a really good way to get the muscle memory down and begin to start hearing what these intervals sound like. I always practice thirds and fifths this way. Say I am practicing my major scales. I would play the scale ascending and descending, then I would skip an interval and practice thirds, both up and down, then fifths, up and down. But as Scott shows, practicing all the intervals is better. Yay! New exercises! :)
Have been playing bass for a while now. But need to learn a lot! Mostly I play in church and we play the old hymns! I have enjoyed your lesson and have learn how to do a sample walking bass lines. It does sound good and adds to the music! Keep up the great work and I am looking forward to more of the vids. Thanks again and God Bless!!!
You are an awesome music teacher. I can really dig how you make your videos to where the average person who is learning to understand notes can catch on. I took music theory for a year, and couldn't apply it to anything because I didn't understand how to apply it to my instrument. This is a no nonsense video of how to apply theory to everyday bass playing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the youtube world, and I look forward to having you help me on my journey to learning the bass.
One of the best things I've heard you say, Scott... just as a singer needs to breathe before the next effort, the same should be exercised when formulating the different segments of a bass solo. Nice.
I love ur lessons man, I always find so many little pieces of licks and lines to mess with, it takes me so long to finish a lesson lol. That's what makes me love playing bass so much, the endless possibilities and tones and licks.
The following is no cheat it is my desire to articulate my respect for what Scott is doing or trying to do: I am a studied bass player, who took a pretty long break due to work. I recently joined SBL and I have to say that it is superb - go for scott, he really knows what (!) and how (!!) to teach - and I can guarantee you this: This is a rare combo!! If you take his advices seriously, you will become a bass player! I am really thankful for what he does.
Thanks! I love when you take your lessons outside one key. It's a bit more complicated to understand and needs more theory to comprehend, but makes it even more musical. I'm so into your lessons, I feel I cannot thank you enough =)
Hey Scott! I just want to say that I've subscribed to your videos, I watch them often on your website and I've never had a better teacher in my life! I literally have placed certain times in my schedule called "Sit down with Scott" - where I sit down and listen and play along with one of your lessons - at least 5 times a week. I can't thank you enough!
Scott, your playing, lessons, explanations and delivery are so inspiring that I can't help but reach for my Bass. Typically when I see someone as good as yourself it just makes me want to smash my Basses to smithereens because what's the point? It just shows me how shitty I really am. However, you really do inspire me to dig deep and go low, to really grasp the instrument and feel it, hear it and play it. Cheers to you and your kindness for sharing your special ability and knowledge.
Hey Scott!!! Thank you for all the vids! ive startet playing bass since the beginning of 2013 after playing the trumpet for over 10 years and you have been a great help and inspiration to adapt the new instrument! The Bass has been e great mind-opener to me about music, harmonics, groove and having fun hitting those phatt strings!!! Thanks man! Youre doing a great job!
Scotts bass lessons are magic. well.... theyre really helpfull is what I mean. Bass players have to keep in playing fitness, by that, as a bass player myself I know the importance of being familiar with as many styles and techniques of bass playing as you can this helps you to keep a step ahead and make the music fresh (whilst of course keeping in time with the drums). All the best from seaga beckford bsc hons..Blessings..
Thanks Scott! I've been playing bass for quite a while. This still helps to play solos with a meaning behind it (and do it structured not just on the fly.) Thanks again!
Interviews would me awesome. Besides that I'd really wanna thank you for all the effort you put into these lessons. I discovered you about a weak ago and haven't by far watched all 100, but I probably will in the end.
Like the way you explain and demonstrate, helpful for a visual person. I really appreciate your new intro and background. Something special for the 100 videos?
Great lesson Scott, I picked up some really good ideas. Playing around with the intervals I started using 3 notes instead of 2. so, 1,3,5 - 2,4,6 - 3,5,7 etc and back down. There's probably a technical term for this but it gave me some great ideas. Cheers.
Just a quick note to make your fantastic lessons even more amazing-you may want to adjust (in this case, raise) the overall volume to near but slightly below 0 dB in your movie editor. Sometimes the volume varies a lot across your lessons in a series...
great lesson scott! also like the new camera angles! lol! um, scott, hope u can make a video lesson about the application of music modes in bass soloing over chord progressions. you don't necessarily have to explain each mode just how to play them correctly in soloing cause i think it can also make soloing sound awesome too. thank you!
So that's how it works? I've been doing this for years and never new what I was doing. Folks just said it was really well done and very different. thanks for this scale understanding.
Wow ,I love how those 3rds sound, very cool Scott! I've heard bass players use intervals many times but never knew how to achieve it. Every time I watch one of your lessons I learn so much stuff that I can use when jamming with friends. Thanks for all the wisdom, cheers!
Scott - first, thanks for sharing all that you do - it is truly helpful, especially for someone trying to move from a lifetime of playing guitar to becoming a passable gigging bassist. I do have a suggestion, though - check the levels on your videos - I often have a hard time hearing what you're playing on your bass above the voice/backing track. Thanks again!
Not only that, the main problem with focal dystonia is misfiring nerves, making your hands twitch around, cramp, lock up, all sorts of things like that. The gloves also help function as a nervous trick to confuse the nerves, stop them from firing so oddly and causing all the contractions.
Great lesson and it opens up lines. Peaks and valleys as he says. I learned it from Bob Magnusson in his book The Art of Walking Bass. Thanks again Scot
It's the first channel i subscribed ever. My english is terrible, so i wouldn't be able to explain all i think about your videos, but in a few words: Thank you.
cheers! if you have your bass guitar on your lap right now..
I got my Fender P Bass on mine!
I got my Ibaenez Ergodyne on mine!
Emerado Fender copy Japanese 70's lawsuit jazz bass on mine!
Peavey!
I've got my niece on mine. I'm feeding her apple juice right now.
I have been playing for over 20 years and I've learned more from this lesson than all of the lessons I've ever taken.
I'm a guitar player, and I get so much from your lessons because you really explain what your thought process is and how to approach real world scenarios, as opposed to "these are the notes that are played on the record". Love it, keep it up!

really don't understand why people dislike this. Thanks again Scott, you can actually bring music into theory

I could listen to this guy play bass to this backing track for hours at a time.
Thanks for these lessons man . I dont play guitar let alone bass guitar but i play piano/ keyboard . I am finding your lessons so invaluable and very applicable to the piano . I have such a newfound respect for my piano because of your music lessons
This helped me out a lot with not only soloing by understanding a few terms that I just couldn't mind wrapped around before

This is probably one of the most valuable music lessons I have ever had! Wonderful!
Unbeatable lessons!
So easy to understand!
We are so lucky to have Scott!

Alan nailed it right on the head. The only thing I can add is to suggest that if you use a pick, know how to palm mute.
I love ur lessons man, I always find so many little pieces of licks and lines to mess with, it takes me so long to finish a lesson lol. That's what makes me love playing bass so much, the endless possibilities and tones and licks.
You can learn A LOT (2 words, not 1) from this chap.
Keep up the good work, Scott. (Notice the correct use of the comma)
Scott's lessons gives me the interpretations of most of the bass riddles that has pose challenges to me! Scott you're doing great!
I'm a guitar player and not a bass player, but this helped very much for my playing as well. Thanks Scott!
2 ways to get your bass solos sounding awesome! th-cam.com/video/juoiLkiMNIc/w-d-xo.html
WOW!!! How awesome do these intervalic-sequences sound with the backing track!!!

Wow!!! These lessons get better and better

Just a great down to earth teacher Scott
Thanks Scott! I've been playing bass for quite a while. This still helps to play solos with a meaning behind it (and do it structured not just on the fly.) Thanks again!
Thank you for this! Teaching improvisation is one of the hardest things I do. This lesson is great for any instrument. Thank you again.
I love this guy! So unpretentious... Refreshing!
Very cool....a light has come on in my head. Thanks so much!
you are amazing scott!

Excellent lesson. I am a guitar play/song writer and I learned some excellent techniques to apply to my songs!
Wow, fantastic lesson! Thanks Scott
Thanks so much for these great tutorials! I'm out in Dubai "learning on the job" and these are always so helpful :)
I'm amazed that you find picking more natural. I've tried to use a pick and I can't really do it.
It's the first channel i subscribed ever. My english is terrible, so i wouldn't be able to explain all i think about your videos, but in a few words: Thank you.
Thank you Scott. As always, informative and fun.

Thank you very much! Brilliant!!!
maaaaan you're a great teacher!!!
You should have one of those convo videos with Glenn Fricker, that would be really fun and interesting.
Wonderful, thank you Scott, us average players need someone like you to take us out of that rut we get stuck in :)
The 6th was by far my favorite flavor
This is awesome information Scott! Thanks so much for sharing with us!
thanks scott!!! you sharpened my dull brain!.
