Confession: I did this exercise, and I was able to finally start piecing together the entire fretboard as Scott said. It. Really. Works. I started doing the same exercise for the major pentatonic scale as well, and I'm already seeing tremendous improvement. Something about this lesson made a whole bunch of stuff click, so I've learned a lot in the past 3 days!
The best teacher of bass I've found on youtube and its free. I don't see the need to complain about how long it takes him to start the lesson when you're not paying for great lessons.. I find the small adventures and chats at the start interesting either way :)
Love the channel. I’ve been a drummer for over 40 years on a professional level gigs sessions so on . Anyways during covid I lost everything regarding gigs work . So I Bought a bass and started practising 2 to 3 hours every day for two years and watching your channel. I mean by no stretch of the imagination I can play as advanced as you guys but I am having so much fun learning. But I went from being able to play rhythm on the bass to learning where the notes are practising scales and now been able to play a whole set with a new rock band three-piece rock band as a bass player and I’m loving it. Personally watching people like Andy , Chaka bass player he is crazy good , Pino Paladino, Felix Pastorius, all the bass player on here are fantastic. All so Leland Sklar is one of my faves Bob Babet so on. Love the channel. Fantastic vibes.
Same here, drummer for many years and moving on to bass. Learning loads and loads from Scott. Things that just months ago seemed impossible to grasp now easy. I also play piano and compose on it but I'm liking the stringed instrument the best. I can play a bit of 6 string guitar but after playing bass for a while six string is next to impossible and not going to pursue it further. Everything feels so compact and the strings of a guitar feel like little compact tiny hairs! I think bass is it for me and makes me use my drumming skills and theory of music from piano at the same time. Like you I'll be searching out some musicians to play with probably next year. Best wishes.
Scott deserves to be watched without being skipped on his videos. U know guys, he teaches every single of his techniques even others too copying all of them and sharing it to everyone. You're so cool scott!!
Hey Scott. I've been a cowboy chord guitar player for 25years who's just learning the bass. In this mornings practice, I put a simple 1, 4 progression on the looper with the intention of really learning the 5 positions on the bass, and I did! What I did not expect was how focusing on the bottom 4 strings unlocked all 6 strings on the guitar up and down the fretboard. The no-reach patterns on strings with consistent intervals was the connective tissue to make CAGED make sense. Thank you SO MUCH. I feel like i'm playing whole new instrument(s)!
Holy shit Scott. You unlocked the missing links I've been looking for, for a long time, in under 20 minutes. This video really put a lot together for me and significantly opened up my playing. Thanks so much.
Ironically, I just figured these shapes out on my own a couple weeks ago. It has by far given me the most bang for buck out of anything I've learned on bass so far.
Scott, keep doing what your doing. Been playing over a decade. Your videos are great and helping me get over a long time learning "slump". Much love from Canada!
This is the beginning of what I need to shed next so thank you. The next thing for me is translating this to playing over chord changes. Is there a video for this? Thanks.
I have started watching videos. You are an amazing teacher! One thing I haven't seen yet is how to play even and clean notes without fingerboard noise. If you have ever had to record clean and clear notes are a must. Keep explaining Music Theory it really helps.
I'm not really good at bass, not really sure what a pentatonic scale is. I'm learning it now.. great stuff, going to subscribe, been playing for 15 years.. this is amazing.. try not to overly troll me folks..
Well... Playing for 15 years and still not knowing what a pentatonic will grant this minimum trolling: Penta means 5 and tonic means tone. In all seriously, good luck man, nice to know there are so many approaches to playing bass ;)
you'll never finish learning music in your everyday life. When you are practicing with your instrument, something new always comes in like (boom) wow! I'm gonna try that again.
Another great one. Thanks. My next place to go from here is how to get better phrasing when playing these patterns. What happens with me with each new scale is I usually just end up playing up and down each note with the same rhythm. Maybe you can give tips to find varying intervals and rhythms that work to get interesting phrases like you play here.
Really great and so fundamentally useful lesson, I'll be wearing this one into the ground as a minor blues catchall to have as backup when I wanna fake it !.. Cheers
Yeah I have known the notes for years on the fret because I played piano as a kid. But I have never had a consistent system to approach the fretboard. I am very happy to have seen this. I am not a blues player but messing around with the minor pentatonic today I can do what my brain tells me to do without breaking my cognitive capacity. Along with subdivisions which I started practicing from one of your videos. I have seriously leveled up as a player man. Better late than never, thank you Scott. I can now effectively start approaching the minor and major scales, I imagined something like this but now I can do it. Thanks, and I owe you one
Not a video, but I want to say this. When you do something without knowing or understanding why you did it, it's a mistake. When you do it with a purpose, it's a cool thing! I've been following your videos and have learnt so so much from you! Thanks a ton...words don't do justice here. However, this trick you showed, doubling up on the notes, I was doing this for a long time...and it was always a mistake to me. Mistake of not being able to jump over to the next string fast enough! LOL!
I use up one down one for my modes, which I only figured out over the last few years. I’m getting overwhelmed with where to grow next as there is so much I don’t know it’s just where to start. Do you do kind of analysis of bass players as i know I could be so much better with focus. SOS lol

Great bro. How good have you gotten now?
Scott, you are one of THE best teachers on line today!!. Very generous with your time
toooo generous
My pleasure Randy - glad you're digging the lessons :)
My girlfriend likes your videos. She thinks you are very hot, I caught her pleasuring herself to your videos. You can have her, if you want.
Scott's Bass Lessons Tem como colocar em uma vibe mais lenta...
vai no botão de configurações do vídeo,(aquele icone que parece uma engrenagem) lá você consegue diminuir a velocidade e pegar com mais facilidade.

I do completely agree with you. Why do people even complain when they get something good for free? :)
Of all 23 personalities, Scott is my favorite.

I hope that one day the entire fretboard will be my safe space

Fantastic lesson! Agree with Randy Clere
Scott, I love what you do. Thank you for an easy way to understand my fretboard.

Scott,s you are the best teachers.....thank you very much......
i'm starting to like this vlog/lesson videos... it's like going to your bass teacher and having a little chat before the lesson

I don't even play bass really (guitarist) but I love your videos, love your playing, your vibe and I learn a lot. Kudos bro, great work.
Loved it, that's my new favoutite shed exercise :)

Great breakdown and simplification, Scott. Thanks a million!

Really great and so fundamentally useful lesson, I'll be wearing this one into the ground as a minor blues catchall to have as backup when I wanna fake it !.. Cheers

This is absolutely brilliant. Great video beginning to end. I will actually buy lessons from you one day. This is awesome and thank you very much!

Awesome lesson as always, Scott! Stay out of the safe space!!!
You should get a gospel bass player to do a course as well if you haven't Scott 🙌🏼🔥 like Sharay reeds Andrew gouche Alan snoop Evans Maurice fitzz
I know Gouche really well... I'll be hitting him up ASAP! :)
Deshawn Brown I second that
Scott's Bass Lessons hell yes!!
Yh that will really be cool
I usually prefer black basses but this white one is amazing
Always sharing that useful information. I want to buy to a pint brother. Thank you once again.

wicked video loved it also a academy member yeah!!
Is there any tab for these shapes?
You should get a Ken Smith bass.....you sounded great on it.
Well this is a really usefull lesson. Have you explain it in anywhere before ?
Perfect for working out the soli on Stevie Wonder's Master Blaster, great video!
I liked the "safe space" thing xD
Hello Scott Im brazilian and like to watch your videos. Great job. Thanks.
Master SCOTT you do all
That is good Scott, but the best way to learn the whole bass is not learning pieces, but learning music!
Great video!!
Always learning from your content! Thank you!
Outstanding info here with SBL, 🎸🎶✋🙏☝️✌️👋✋🎶🎶⚡️💜
Scott!!! I need to know where to get that hoodie you're wearing at the beginning of the video! I need it!!!
Eric Bevel it's a Superdry top.
What brand hoodie are you wearing the beginning of the video? It looks very comfortable.
Thanks again scooter!! Love the vids
My safe space doesn't sound like your safe space...
Please do a video on left thumb positioning, I'm having a hard time keeping it straight behind the neck for notes above the 12th fret. Thanks!
Any chance for future videos you could do it with tablature as I prefer that way
What kind of effects is Evan using at 5:35 in the video? :) Can someone help me identify that sound? It's wicked!
Envelope Filter :)
Could be envelope, but it sounds so even that it may be a synth pedal.
i am a trumpet player but i can not stop looking your video haha why i not know
This is soooo cool when I saw this I literally smiled
I love that...👍😂 than's scott's
You're the best man !

hi mr scott can you make some video how to set up bass bridge . thankyou
thats rozhan -the boss!
Scott, where did you get that white sweater and for how much?
I use up one down one for my modes, which I only figured out over the last few years. I’m getting overwhelmed with where to grow next as there is so much I don’t know it’s just where to start. Do you do kind of analysis of bass players as i know I could be so much better with focus. SOS lol
Who are the 15 people giving this the thumbs down? This is a fantastic lesson.
Is there a sheet (pdf) for those positions?
Scott is that a Callow Hill bass I see?
Great stuff. On a side note was I the only one thinking “well now that baby is deaf now” when they were playing drums by him?
The safe space killed me😂😂😂😂
Can anyone let me know what song he was playing in the studio at 4:24...?
appreciated...
God you are such a great bass player, I have learned so much from you, keep it up man
