I could hear his wife in the background yelling at him I told you it's supposed to done once a year. LOL

    It warms my heart to see folks using a combustion analyzer after the installation. After Every install it’s a must! Yet you will see installers plop a boiler in pipe it and not test C02, Smoke,draft and so forth. Great to see.

    Those Taco numbers are highly optimistic, they assume your heat is running far more than it is in NY. If you need a new pump no reason not to go with ECM pumps for most people they'll save somewhere between $10-30 per year and the pump is maybe $75 more than the standard 007. A standard 007 uses 87 watts it runs at one speed, all out, the ecm pump all out uses around 45 watts, taco likes to claim 12 watts but that's not typical on avg you are using ~30 watts(unless it is a low head/low flow application or you have zone valves and the pump is constantly running the thing is running at 35 watts) so you can assume you save 50w. In my experience the heat here only runs December-March, for a well insulated house the heat load is pretty much non-existent during the other months. I've got a Tekmar control on my system and can see my boilers run around 200 hours a month so my heating system runs around 800 hours a year that's like 40kwH or around $10 per year savings even if I was saving 75w it still only saves me $15 per year. Those old school taco circulators are good for more than a decade in most cases so unless you need to change it it isn't cost effective to preemptively replace them.
    Not defending the guy calling you out but that is the truth about ECM circs and energy savings, I think you changed the pump because it wasn't working correctly. If you're in Canada or far upstate and live in a drafty old house maybe your heat runs enough to reach that $75 or $100 in which case yeah the payoff for replacing is like 2 years and a preemptive replacement maybe warranted.

    • @jimmyjamesl2318
      @jimmyjamesl2318 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't know all the taco facts...but I knownthe $105 per year PER CIRCULATOR is INSANE!! He also has kw rate all wrong.
      standard residential rates on long Island are ad follows..
      6am-4pm "off peak" .9cents
      4pm-7pm "peak" .22 cents
      7pm-10pm "off peak" .9 cents
      10pm-6am "super off peak" .5 cents

    The inflator would of never worked on Steve’s expansion tank because the air was rising through the water and the bladder in the tank was popped. If the tank was originally hung upside down it would of been a different story. On a side note he needs to take his cars to the car wash.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, with water on the wrong side of the bladder, even if it was mounted outlet down and valve core up. it still likely wouldn't have emptied out, because the bladder would collapse and seal the off outlet hole and the internal leak spot.
      how can I claim and justify my comment? by having replaced thousands of failed expansion tanks over the years, all sizes, types and systems. while the majority of them were well/potable water tanks, there's been plenty of hydronic/solar/other also.
      in the end, they ALL fail the same way, air leaks out valve core, past bladder sealing surface and through the bladder itself!
      once the pressure leaks down it starts over expanding and holding less expansion volume, raising the pressure higher or causing short cycling, which just wears it faster.

    Glad coming to Florida, but i remember my 1st year here back in 2010. WOW, was it brutal, as only time visited Florida was spring break and Xmas time; so my first summer was an eye opener!
    And 1st time going into a houses attic crawl space (yes an attic can be a crawl space b/c there’s no room to move unless 2 years old and a contortionist 😉 at times…..most times😂) during summer months and went up dry, came down completely soaked and learned to keep a change of clothes on service calls for this reason, along w/ a couple battery fans, and lots of water! Also, having a gopher (yes gopher or apprentice) is helpful so you can make sure if happen to forget a tool/part, can have them get along w/ quickly help do what needs done when in an attic or crawl space above the house……cuz 140+ degrees very serious and some companies worked for prohibited us going up 8f outdoor temps were over certain temps; we’d either schedule work for diff months or early morning or late at night; and it’s normal to be working till 9 pm b/c it’s cooler or starting at 5-6 am b/c it’s cooler, just saying.
    Dint do much hvac anymore and so excited for yo7 to come to Florida Mike, hopefully central FL, as competition is good and need great HVAC ppl who know what they doing, imo of course.

    the expansion tanks only say to mount vertically, with schrader down, so their silly "color changing" cap can get wet and show it's leaking. it is best to always avoid horizontal though, especially on hydronic that has many pressure cycles per day/heating call.
    I'm not sold on that magical cap, because it can make them leak down air pressure.

    draining the expansion tanks that way only works if the bladder is intact, with only the air leaked out over time.
    if the bladder is bad, with water past it and in the tank at schrader valve port, then air will usually not push it out and the bladder will still raise up and seal off the water nipple, making it hold pressurized water. it's the same way on all bladder type expansion tanks from potable water(well/booster), hydronic and solar, dating right back to when the majority of them had a bolt on flange and replaceable bladder, which nobody ever replaced, because the tank was rusted inside by then and would eat the new bladder(lol). been there done that, starting nearly 30 years ago.

    Man oh man that was a sweet job!! An sadly an unfortunately as of 2023 it is getting to the point in service parts? It is ACTUALLY almost cheaper to install the customer a brand spanking new unit than repair parts!!! Parts are becoming B.S. in pricing 😢 High efficiency, LP gas furnaces with dc induction, variable, speed motors are a bloody shameful ridiculous… So? The question is do we take a unit that is 50% aged out and put 3/4 of the price of a new unit or just flat replace the unit? Most logical thinking customers prefer a complete brand new replacement…..
    But on a side note? Got a expert question for you an I am going to put you on the proverbial hot seat here… If you were going to install a combo wall mount boiler needing approximately 199,000 BTU output AN!! Once installed you don’t want any call backs (other than yearly maintenance) what manufactured brand, would you suggest and support? I’m asking you personally which one you trust we already know Navion is a “()”great unit when brand spanking new but after a little usage? Well, I won’t say anything else to get you in trouble so they are out but I would really considered an honor to hear your recommendation Mikey Sir 😊(“edited fur a stupidly spell boo boo”)

After 25 years of installing these condensing boilers the 10% they save you in fuel is not worth the short life and expensive repairs. The problem today is cast iron boilers require 50 cubic feet of air for each 1000 BTUs and most basements are either stuffed with junk or the kids live there. I would like to see or maybe you know a cast iron boiler that uses outside air.
