    It's honestly relieving to see someone who actually knows their shit about Lovecraft talk about this game.

    I was waiting for this game for so long, that when it came out, I actually didn't let myself be disappointed. I tried to enjoy it as much as I can (even though I also didn't like the beginning of it). Then the good atmosphere gripped me so much, that I overlooked all of its shortcomings.
    I'm a little biased, but I love this game despite its flaws.
    Also, you're almost at 500 subs, keep it up!! Unfortunately, I can't afford Patreon, because I'm also a student :D

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That was exactly my mindset as well! I actually bought the game on the day it released but immediately refunded it after seeing what the estimated playtime was (about 8 hours), and I just assumed that I'd be disappointed by its length. But in reality, now that I've played the game, it really did impress me even if it's not perfect. The start was shakey but the rest was great.
      And don't worry about the patreon! I'm not expecting many people to donate and those who don't will not miss any of the main uploads or anything like that. Thanks for your continued support dude!

      3 years late but i did not enjoy this as a horror game but as a great homage to lovecraft. there are so many things that comes from his tales. you have a reference to reanimator, pickman's model, shadow over innsmouth of course, as well as call of cthulhu. i felt the stealth was meh but it functioned, hated the fact i had to hide from you know guards the detective was in the lost battalion he should be able to take out underpaid workers

    God, I love your format of telling!
    It's a shame that not many devs nail the atmosphere. Really. It's either lacking or overwhelming so the overall picture just shatters and becomes rigid. Oh well, we'll just have to wait until people learn how to maintain the atmosphere, then it's party time

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems like most of the games that get the atmosphere right actually do it unintentionally (or at least unknowingly) e.g. STALKER and Pathologic. Come to think of it, Eastern Europeans are really great at it in general.

    So when can we expect the Bubsy review?
    I would not say no to a video going into how well this game does Lovecraft (you are the Lovecraft game man after all) but this was excellent. Props for the 'stellar' joke, very high brow humour. I'll definitely be checking out the stream for the full experience (especially looking forward to chapter 9, you make it sound so relaxing).
    The point you make about colour is really fascinating. I have a thing about aesthetic contrast but I've never really thought much about how effective the colour palette could be in that regard. And considering how colours often have subtle psychological effects anyway, there could be a lot of potential in making that more prominent in horror games.
    Also, even before you explained about The Shambler (insert spooky voice here) the name sent chills up my spine and creepy images into my brain. Because Shambling is either adorable or terrifying; there is no in-between.

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chapter 9 definitely is a turning point for the game. I hated it at the time but looking back, it was pretty well executed. I genuinely made me feel nauseous at times!
      I think colour is something we'll see more and more developers utilise in the coming years - texture quality and polygon counts can only get so much better, and while they have been improving in the name of realism and spectacle we've largely neglected the creative potential of colour. There was a phase (that we've only recently left) where games would have these horrible colour filters over them. Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a famous example of this - it had a horrendous yellow tinge in the standard release, and in the director's cut it was replaced by grey. It seems like many people see colour as a way of communicating a very surface level form of visual identity when it can really be as deep as other things like aspect ratio and stylised formats (VHS, film etc.).
      I ADORE names like "The Shambler". Magic may not exist, but the ability to shake a person with two words is close enough for me.
      As for Bubsy, have a short poem:
      When next the Moon blocks out the Sun,
      Bubsy awakes; chaos begun.
      Seems far away - but is quite soon,
      Bubsy review uploaded: June.

    01:33 to answer your question, probably earlier than what I am going to say, but because I recently started playing it again it stroke me as to how much better real time graphics were to pre rendered cutscenes. I am talking about the PC version (GOG version if you need to know) of Alan Wake. I almost laughed how much worse the cutscenes were.
    Anyway, thanks for the video.

    I remember hearing about this game when it came out, and watched a playthrough of it and yeah. I thought it was a really solid game, it had its issues but I even found some of the problems kind of cool like the weird lip syncing and general weird faces for some characters worked. It added another layer of uncanny ness that doesn’t exist in universe but can impact the player. I remember also seeing a cutscene where a woman in a dress at down and her dress physics lost their mind.
    Also, just curious, is The Martyr a real/preexisting cryptid? I have heard of the others ones (I’m assuming you mean The Screecher from that Don’t Starve mod)?
    I tried looking it up and just found an article from Andromeda the Martyr from Legends of Cryptids wiki.

    I mean I think the unrealistic geography can make for some interesting visuals.

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely can! I kinda wish that the devs had leaned into that a little more. A surreal, high budget take on Lovecraft isn't something I've seen before.

    As a great fan of the roleplaying game and the books, my heart was broken when this game finally came out. Maybe an anthology game with different downloadable chapters could work well alongside the short stories

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's something I don't actually tackle in the video but I may at some point - it doesn't really relate much to the TTRPG outside of the RPG mechanics. I really wish they hadn't used the Call of Cthulhu name because otherwise I think it would've disappointed a lot less people! I still enjoyed the game but I can imagine if someone released a short, linear singleplayer game called "Dungeons and Dragons" I'd be pretty pissed too.

    • @inakiiribarrenlineros8594
      @inakiiribarrenlineros8594 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Painticus Yeah, it dosen't seem to really capture the feel of tabletop roleplaying (wich is extremely difficult to do, I must say) but it's freaking stunning, that's for sure.

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An anthology would actually work really well - The Call of Cthulhu (the original story) was more or less an anthology itself. I'd love to see someone take that approach!

  • @avatar-of-chaos860
    @avatar-of-chaos860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I played all the way--twice, even max stats my character. Cyanide Studios, is, what it appeared to be experimenting in the mechanics of CoC rpg. How it work in video games? You are playing a "scenario", pretty much what _I_ described it. Choices don't affected the story.
    Call of Cthulhu's idea of immersive sim is problem solving.
    Only thing I don't like is openness use of Lovecraftian feel. Storytelling--in fiction is built slowly--causally hinting otherworldly corruption.
    Lovecraft's stories start at the end. Explaining *why* and *how*, while keeping the full scope under a veil.
    Edit: I am be late for the stream...😥

    • @Painticus
      @Painticus  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good way of explaining the immersive sim elements - problem solving. All roads lead to the same place, but I do still appreciate that there is some variation/freedom in the player actions. I still greatly prefer the standard immersive sim setup though.
      The dream sequence at the start is what really soured my initial reaction to the game for the very reason you mentioned - it throws you in the deep end of the spooky stuff without any buildup. At least they were somewhat reserved for the rest of the game! Honestly they could outright remove the intro chapter and the game would be almost objectively better.
      No worries about the stream lateness! It's always good to see you pop by whenever you can.

    I have this game for the Switch, but I suck so bad at stealth that I kinda got stuck in the asylum and lost will to continue. Even deleted the game and my save file. I should probably give it another go, because I was enjoying it...I just hate stealth so much.
