Lived in the Bronx from 1950 thru 1975. Moved to New Jersey. On 1979 we moved to North Florida. I will never forget my Bronx. Went to school there married there and then moved away. Drove back. fifteen times loved it. Have no more family there. 137 Street Brown Place 138 st it’s all different. In my 80s I now cannot go there anymore but I loved love the Bronx. Blessings.

What a great video! The person who shot this video picked a perfect time.it was early in the morning and it was a great sunny day and very little traffic. the Grand concourse is indeed a Grand boulevard and is iconic of the borough of the Bronx. It is nice to see many of those well built buildings still standing. Thank you for posting this it was enjoyable to watch.

I have a much older friend who grew up in the Bronx in the 1940's, and he said it was a great place to live. He lived two blocks from Concourse, and it was just great. However, he's afraid to even visit the area now, and he's a real New Yorker. The crime in the area is just horrible even though there have been some attempts at restoring the Concourse area.
There was a gay guy I met on the train a couple of years ago who moved to the Bronx for the cheaper rents. He said his apartment was great, but the neighbors would yell obscenities at him coming on from a night out. He tells me the Bronx is not at all gay-friendly.
I love Brooklyn, and parts of it are just great especially since all the gentrification. Park Slope is grand.
Manhattan I find the people aren't as friendly, and I'd never want to live in Manhattan.
Realize I can only go by what I hear and see while visiting because I don't live in New York. I almost attended New York University but chickened out at the last minute because New York is so big.
I love urban life, and I have visited enough to realize some neighborhoods have their own little (sort of town) environment. However, I've never ridden the subway, and it frightens me to think about riding it. I'd have to take cabs everywhere or bring my car.
Anyway, I"m too old to think about relocating to New York now because where I live has been excellent to me financially, and I"m over 40. Starting over in a new city at that age is much different than starting over at 25.

Sorry, but you and your friend are wrong. Obviously, he's never been to other parts of the Bronx for him (and you) to generalize the Bronx as not all gay-friendly. Take it from someone who was born and raised there all his life, your friend's wrong. And Brooklyn isn't all that better just because of gentrification. You think it's all good because they're displacing long-time residents and closing down communal businesses just to "buff up" the borough? Wrong. How many many of your friends are born and raised New Yorkers?

Sternyduke - sorry you had to go through that experience early in your life. It's sad how certain positive, harmless traits - i.e. being a quiet person who likes to read - can lead to dangerous levels of verbal and physical harassment in some environments.
As much as we sometimes like to romanticize the big, bad days of "The Boogie Down" and other notorious areas - we need to be reminded of the real-life toll that living in these areas sometimes took on people - and that we shouldn't glorify the toxicity, violence, and dysfunction that existed in these places.
I hope that life has been much better for you in recent years, and that you continue to heal from your experiences.

Not so. Where I live on the Concourse, crime rates are lower than the city average for everything except "smash and grab" - car break-ins, and even that isn't high. People here are polite and generally OK!
