I just started playing recently and I've watched these before every new dungeon. They've been a big help. Normally I dread doing group content to the point that if able, I won't do it, but these guides quickly and succinctly gave me the confidence to dive into them anyway. I've even started healing through dungeons. Much appreciation.
Nice one :D One of my biggest goals was to try and eliminate potential stress from first time runs so I'm happy to hear I may have helped in that regard. Very rarely did I encounter anyone who was a bit of a dick in the countless dungeons I ran so you should be fine. SQ do a good job of encouraging players to be happy about having a first timer with them with bonus token rewards and such (especially in the 8-mans where people commonly cheer at the fact). Anyways, thanks for the feedback and I hope you enjoy your stay in Eorzea!
I'm a new healer (WHM, 46) and I explained to the tank (who's obviously not new) "I am learning this dungeon, please don't pull everything". He says "well here's knowing if you're a good healer or not". Pulls every thing, I pop all heals, he wasn't helping killing, and DPS was also a sprout who had no idea what he was doing either. Tank blames everything on me, I left party after that. I know that it was just that tank, because I got another run and a totally new tank - told him I watched your videos and went slow, so I learned what is expected. We cleared in 18 minutes. Thank you for your help and videos!
Well sorry to hear you had a poop run the first time. I think I've only seen one tank ever clear the pull with the healer beforehand. To me it just seems very stupid. It can speed things up but if you (as the tank) don't check your healer out at all, you're just asking for trouble. Even having a well geared healer doesn't always make it super easy because the tank themselves can have poor gear. Wipe one time doing that big pull and you would probably end up wasting more time than if you just did it normally so I never understood the tanks who just blindly charge in - bad tanks really. Anyway, no worries. Glad to hear your second run went better!
Annoying lot, they are. I hate it when they pull that kind of stunt and they never even give anyone a heads up. Then they all go crazy in the chat box like some toddler throwing a tantrum. Smh.
lol I had a similar experience except the tank sulked and didn't rejoin the group so i told the dragoon, "ok I guess you're tank" and after we'd defeated the first boss without him, the tank quit. Fun times!
@Gareth Fairclough I've gone to a simpler line, 'Stand still, get healed". lol had one guy who thought he'd shame me by standing still long after he'd been healed. Nope, no shame here!
Yup, here's another. This is the last of the pre-recorded footage I had left over from when I was last playing the game. I was umming and ahing about whether or not to spend today making this one (It's taken about 7.5 hours lol) but I suppose it's easier to get on with it due to making Stone Vigil yesterday. It rather put me back into the mood of doing these guides but as I commented yesterday, I just don't have the recording time usually (or money for the game for that matter). Anyway, hopefully this one helps a few people and if you're here and have enjoyed my style of commentary/editing, feel free to check out some of my regular gameplay videos. I chat a lot of shit in them and the let's play videos were my main reason for joining TH-cam. I don't like to plug my other stuff on these FF guides (other than that little text at the end) but I obviously don't have any more guides coming out for now - so if you want more of my garbage you'll find it over in them. I recommend one of the 'funny montages' to get a feel for the high quality waffle. As always thanks a ton for the support (as that's always cool) and enjoy the video!
I adore your guides. They're informative and lighthearted at the same time. I'm a fairly new healer (WHM FTW), but have healed in other MMOs before. Watching these before doing a new instance really tones down my anxiety. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these!
Still new to healing. So I watched your vid, tab back in to game, insta queue, I'm the only sprout. Maniac tank immediately pulls everything like you said. We survive and end up finishing in under 20 minutes. It was a fun run but made a little easier knowing something crazy could happen.
Thank you for your guides. I started with this game pretty much a year ago on a warrior and watched your guides before entering every dungeon. The combination of short and precise information and your humour is very enjoyable - flame left, fruit right is still present in my head. I even learned to enjoy eating cheese (it's a dps increase in savage raids as well). Wish you all the best for whatever you are doing next =)
You know that's the first time I've heard of that flame left-fruit right trick actually working? That's madness :D You're welcome XRays, I was very happy to read your comment so thank you for that. I'm glad you've enjoyed my guides. Right now I'm just working on a little mobile game as a side project while I try and find a games company to pay me to make things for them instead. I'll very likely do a video covering it at some point when it's done (it will be free) but I have been considering the possiblity of coming back to FFXIV (to continue making guides) if money stops being a bit tight. Anyway, I wish you all the best and hope you continue to enjoy the game!
@@TomScottDoesStuff Thank you, the new story in shadowbringers (and I've played one dungeon so far) is really good. If you return and want company, let me know - I'm in the process of leveling an alt on Odin (as we have two datacenters in EU by now).
Well you'll know I'm back when I drop another guide, that or if you spot me during my usual 18 hours a day afk bench time in Limsa :D But it wont be for a while either way, I have no money for games right now >.
Thanks for the guides. I typically hate or dread (or worst, both) group content so being a Tank in a game I'm new to, I have a lot of responsibility and I don't want to let my team down. These guides are helping me immeasurably and I plan to watch one every time I start up a new dungeon/boss :)
Nice one! I'm happy that my guides are able to put you into more content, especially as a tank! Just don't worry too much about your performance, making mistakes keeps those healers employed!
As a new player I find your guides very informative. I am usually very nervous of making mistakes in group content so normally avoid them but your explanations give me the confidence to have a go.
i got lucky to find your videos. they are really helpful. im just about to finish ARR on free trial and your guides really helped me prepare for the dungeons.
Ahh thank you for this guide! I play a white mage and just did my first run of this earlier (wiped like 2 times). The tank didn't do the thing you said in the video, but they were going REALLY fast until the second wipe. The bard kept taking lots of damage the entire time too.
No worries! We all wipe so I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes some of the footage I use for a fight is from a wipe in progress :D No one has noticed so far though so keep it secret. Keep it safe.
I started watching these videos before doing new dungeons now as they are getting harder to do blind (especially as a new MMO player). This one looks pretty fun to do though, can't just mindlessly DPS enemies down with the large amount of AoE's and the whole purple fog thing in the first section! Looking forward to trying this
Thank you for the guides! The written guide was helpful but seeing it visually is more helpful since some might not cover everything. Oh man that hit on the WHM when he already left the zone skdfhkshfa mood. I hate it when it happens.
Yeah it seems like the targets are selected before the graphic fades so you can get caught out sometimes. And of course on the other hand YO WTF WAS THAT BULLSHIT??!
MAN it is nice having a little intel going in. My tank did just that.. pull run pull run pull stop and fight. As the WHM it keeps you hopping and throwing regen on the run while trying to keep a line of sight on the tank. We did that run FAST, but I think I was operating at about 95% capacity. Keep up on the Lucid Dreaming because you will be burning MP fast. One DD ate a straight line attack near the end but swiftcast / raise and they were back in business.
:D It can be fun to get a little healing pressure now and then (as most of the time it's pretty easy) but that pull can be a real headache if you're not expecting it and you (and the tank) are not that geared. Glad to hear you survived the crucible!
As a new tank, this is the first dungeon I wiped in :( Didn't notice a ranged add was smacking the healer until too late and a monk kept dying but I dunno if that was my fault. My situational awareness, as you might guess, isn't the best.
@Tom Scott Does Stuff Did they rework the final boss, Batraal, since like, ARR/HW/SB? Some guides talk about him using a frontal AOE cone, but he just uses a 360° aoe circle and it was really taking a chunk out of melee DPS during the fight. Are healers just needing to put out a lot more heals in this fight than they used to? Or does Batraal have a "tell" when he's going to spin that melee DPS should be avoiding? I don't remember things being that complicated for that fight.
After talking to one of my mates, it doesn't seem to be new. Maybe I've just been tanking this fight forever, so I've never felt the sting of his swings as a Melee DPS. That or I was just not getting healed through his AoEs enough. Or I need to look for his "tell"
So from what I remember, and I believe I remember pretty well, his frontal AOE cone is probably just meaning his cleave - and cleaves are effectively just a frontal cone attack without the aoe graphic on the floor. As far as the whirlwind type attack goes, I also believe it's just one of those things you just have to eat and the healer will deal with it. Neither attack ever seemed an issue to me unless players were messing up on some of the avoidable attacks. As a dps it's not worth taking breaks on the boss to try and pre-empt that damage as the healer should be able to deal with it. However obviously sometimes you just have to read the situation and if you can see multiple people, including yourself, are low don't move back to the danger zone until the healer has topped you off a bit - but that's more general raid awareness than specific to this boss. Anyway hope that helps!
@@TomScottDoesStuff Yeah. Thanks. In my previous experience, I would never have thought to move away from the boss, even as a DPS, as healer would just heal through the damage. Maybe that was harder for a healer to focus on at 3:00AM EST. hah
The final boss seems to have a move where he throws an axe at you. Got slapped, ressed and then slapped again but didn't see any aoe on the ground. Is there a move where he randomly targets someone or am I just blind.
Hiya, Once you destroy the three crystals and the boss enrages, he'll start targeting random people with his line aoes. Perhaps it was one of those? I don't believe he has any other random attacks but if you didn't see any aoe, maybe you just stabbed yourself by mistake? It happens to the best of us.
That room before the 1st boss is rather tricky for me as a tank. I pull the mobs into the purple glow but I still get killed a few times. I'm otherwise fine with tanking in general. Does anyone else have trouble with that specific part or is it just me?

You should keep doing it, I thought I was decent healer until the dragon dungeon came around (reclaim cid’s airship level)
