    Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

    "but i'm so lonely"
    the perfect encapsulation of being ahead of your time while still having to live in your time. the feeling of being okay with being single but being so lonely all the time. knowing that you're worth more than love but still wanting it. i just...i don't think i've ever heard this feeling articulated so eloquently until i saw this movie. it felt like jo was talking about me in that theater, that i was jo and jo was me. the paradoxical existence of being a woman. the perfect paradox that i feel like a lot of us feel. thank you so much greta gerwig for articulating this so beautifully by adding that line. i love you.

      It’s like a never ending circle: knowing I am worth more than the love of any one man, but wanting to share in that intimate connection with someone whom I love and who loves me! Women should ALWAYS follow their ambitions and dreams! Just don’t do it to SPITE the idea of love and companionship. I think that’s where Greta hit the home run with this script! Thank you for your wonderfully written comment! Every girl should read this book/see this movie!!!

      @user-sd5vs3iy5s 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Your comment made me think about it and analyze, and then i became really sad. It is actually strange, when you try to prove that you're ok without love but still want it so much at the same time. Women are not made whole by man. But as a person you just NEED to feel that way and that you being love by someone. It is so bad to be so powerless in that question and i don't really know what to say. I just want people to understand, that women need love and RESPECT at the same time.

    • @MissSunflower242
      @MissSunflower242 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Your comment and the replies are right on point.
      Seconds before Mom asked Jo: "Do you love him?" and Jo replies in so many words, "I think I desire to BE loved." They're not the same thing and Jo had to admit that fact and face her feelings all in this moment. Her losing someone she deeply loved, Beth, made her long for companionship even more, maybe she reflected on the fragility of life, but MARRIAGE has to be more than that. Jo is so right though, women are MORE than just lovers, nurturers, care-givers, mothers and wives. We are all of those things AS WELL as academics, friends, ambitious leaders, counselors and companions...there's nothing wrong in taking care of yourself as an independent women while still wanting the love and respect we deserve from a man.
      This moment was so courageous yet vulnerable. The first time I cried at a movie in years. Thinking about seeing this for the 3rd time.

    Jo's lines here aren't actually in the book. Greta Gerwig took them from a letter the author, Louisa May Alcott, wrote in response to how people were always asking her about who her characters would fall in love with/marry instead of how they would achieve their dreams and ambitions.
    The novel is semi-autobiographical, so Jo March embodies Alcott in many ways. But, Gerwig takes it a step further in this adaptation and gives Jo some of Alcott's own words.

      So was it the author saying that as her own thoughts or thoughts of the characters or like hey this movie is more then just sisters finding love! But I'm guessing the last part I'm so lonely probably wasn't in that letter but added in at the end?

    • @Nehaa18
      @Nehaa18 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Jenic Darling Yes, I believe the “I’m so lonely” part was added in, but again it goes along with Jo’s character because she is fairly lonely in the novel once she sees her sisters going off to marry and live their lives. When her family is no longer all together is when the realization of the state of her loneliness really comes into play.

    • @brianwarner2171
      @brianwarner2171 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      I really love this addition and think it adds so much to Jo's (still sort of out of left field) decision to marry Professor Bhaer at the end of the movie. Even if writing and her sisters are her true loves in life, even someone like Jo can get lonely and crave companionship. It's such a reassuring message that marriage can be just a perk to life, if not your whole life!

      Everyone always talks about making your own way in life as a woman but nobody ever talks about how isolating it really is. When I was younger I thought I wouldn't have a problem with being a career focused woman and that I would be fine as long as I had my career. I'm working towards a career, but finding a significant other and starting a family while going through the ringer is very difficult, so I'm choosing to put the rest of my life on hold until then. The loneliness has started to sink in. Being a self sufficient woman is great, but it is very isolating.

I was emotionally exhausted after this movie.

    This scene gets me every time I watch it, but what really impresses me, on all of my rewatches (lol) is the little details that Gerwig put in. For example, did anyone else notice that Jo wears the same vest in this scene that Laurie wore earlier in the movie? This heightens the emotions because earlier in this scene, Jo remarks how she would accept Laurie if he were to propose again, not because she loves him romantically, but because she wants to be loved and doesn't want to be alone.

    “but I’m so lonely” made me to cry in the movie theatre the first time I saw this💔 it perfectly encapsulates that feeling a lot of women have where you know you are strong and you know it’s okay to be be single but you still want to love someone and be loved and then you feel guilty for feeling that way, because you know you’re made for more than that.

    Ok... This clip is great, Greta just decoded Jo's character in these 36" like it was nothing. Jo was always different, analyzing her environment and the people around her. she knew that being born a woman in her time was basically a road to nowhere, she describes the women of her time and the standards laid on women as unfair and sick. To consider a person only of their capacity to be an object of giving love is unfair. Yet is those standards that don't give Jo another idea of what she could feel. In her mind, she isn't a subject of love and therefore she isn't a traditional woman, and even though she acts tough and determined this really hurts her. Her line: "I'm so lonely" describes her character as being away from the society that she always analyzed, the one she sees her sisters in and the one she can't get in as hard as she tries.

  • @Moosemika
    @Moosemika 4 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    This just perfectly encapsulates my entire life. Ever since I was little, I never wanted to be that woman that was held back by men. That let what other people thought I should do influence what I did. So many people have ideas of how women should act and what they should and shouldn’t do and I have always refused to adhere to those ideas. But sometimes in order to achieve something, you have to sacrifice a lot. And definitely with my independence and ambition, I’ve given up a lot. I have always rejected the idea of women having to NEED a man but at the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to have someone who loves you, someone to share your life with.

    • @SovietRipper
      @SovietRipper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      While men don't admit it, they depend on women to an obsessive degree since they aren't taught how to manage their emotions at an early age, a disproportionate amount of men suicide after the lose of a romantic partner. This is due to men using women as an external emotional "regulator".

      anamika ray I get that. I also think having a stable, healthy relationship is a sign of maturity and growth. And there’s power too in having something where both people can be vulnerable, healthy codependency is the kind of thing a good couple earns - it isn’t a given in any relationship. So in that way I don’t see it as a defeat :)

    It was harsh to watch, it literally hurt me.
    Great script, Love it.

    This is me like 70% of all time
    Feeling capable, ambitious, satisfied the way i am controlling my life, But always sad for being alone, doing stuff alone, walking alone, sleeping, eating, thinking, dreaming for only my self
    No one to look forward to see every day
    I had my chances with the whole relationship stuff, But never felt love
    Each and every time I feel like cold hearted sad little creature

    Admittedly, I rolled my eyes at the first part because yes yes, girl power and independence.
    But the addition of "I'm so lonely".
    Greta Gerwig just looked into my soul.

    • @JustAPrayer
      @JustAPrayer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      To be fair the line was added because its a direct quote from Louisa May Alcott the author, who was unmarried when she was alive and argued with her publishers and readers all the time because all anyone seemed to want to ask her about was who ends up with who in her stories. She was also forced to give Jo a love interest at the end, which she didn't want to do either as she saw Jo as a reflection of herself, and this movie alludes to her being pressured into it by the publishing company.

    • @agustina7345
      @agustina7345 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      why did you roll your eyes in the first place lmao we get it you are not like the other girls

    • @bananaboat805
      @bananaboat805 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@agustina7345 because what once was groundbreaking is now being overused as a gimmick in entertainment, devaluing the impact of what could be an illuminating commentary on the female struggle to be equal while different. I hate being patronized in fiction. Mary Sues and forced representation at the expense of a plot suck. I rolled my eyes because I thought Gerwig was reducing Jo to this, but she did the opposite, and it made me so happy :) I love seeing empowered women in real life because I know they struggled for it and I understand it. On the screen, I want to see the internal struggle because it exhibits a humanity which all genders, races, and nationalities can empathize with. We are frustratingly human and deserving of what we want our lives to be...just like everyone else.

    • @valentina5885

      She's not saying women are better, she's simply saying they are human and have minds and ambition like men.
      This isn't a gimmicky "girl power" speech. This is one of the most important scenes in the film, because it's when Jo finally lets out (in front of her mother, btw) all her frustations towards an unjust society. It's where she is at her most vulnerable.

    This whole monologue until the "but I'm so lonely" is how I feel about women EVERYDAY! Especially when people just want to hurry women onto the next "title" of "girlfriend", "wife", "mother", etc., when there are other things as well that women have to offer other than bring titled in relation to another person. Those aforementioned titles are all wonderful, but a woman is her own person too with these ambitions and passions Jo mentions and it just breaks my heart that there are many women who do not have the opportunity to explore those wants for themselves because they may have been rushed into these roles in relation to other people.
