I am from Weymouth and I grew up with the Harborlight Mall. The mall was only accessible from the front using one of the two main entrances (not including the entrances to the two large anchor stores which had their own secondary entrances into the mall). The corridors from each entrance would lead to the central fountain which right behind would sit the movie theater. Kmart closed due to a union despute. Building 19 took over and made the former Kmart space into their flagship location. The original Building 19 was located 1/4 mile away in warehouse 19 of the Hingham shipyard. The company had expanded quickly and needed a new flagship location. After the move to Harborlight, the original Building 19 became the company’s headquarters and main distribution center.
I was a security guard from 1982 till 1985. Had a blast. One of the Mall rats was Paul Santo who ended up writing and playing music with Aerosmith and a bunch of other great bands
I remember the water fountains inside near the movie theater, buck a book, building 19, papa Gino’s and of course bonkers before they got shut down. Happy I got to experience that place as a kid
I remember the Army Navy store, the fountains as someone else mentioned, Bonkers a little later, the jewelry store opposite the theater, where my hooligan friends would steal necklaces from the broken display case, and the movie theater. The last film I saw there was either Stargate or Heat. I was there on a date with Courtney Crowell, and the next day I went to ZT Maximus skatepark with Travis Wall. The last time I was at the mall, me, Tommy McCaulif, and Andrew Hopie got caught smoking weed behind the place. 😂 good times.
Nice try with your video BUT the aerial view shown is not of The Harborlight Mall in North Weymouth, MA, it's stock footage of some mall which appears to be located off some sort of expressway. You should probably remove that along with some of the other stock footage that is also not of Harborlight Mall. I grew up in Weymouth and remember this mall well. When Kmart closed in 1982, it was replaced with a similar discounter called Stuart's, which only lasted a few years before the chain went under. Also, the Purity Supreme closed after the chain acquired Angelos Supermarkets in the mid 1980's. Since Angelos already had a store across the bridge in nearby Hingham, MA it was more cost effective to keep that location. The Angelos in Hingham was later rebranded as "Purity" before the chain was eventually acquired by Stop&Shop. As an added footnote, Harborlight Mall never really found its niche, the movie theater actually did reasonably well, but the mall lacked any big anchor stores to serve as a draw for customers which hastened its demise.
75% of the narrating was fine, the other 25% was slightly infuriating. In parts where there should be some "emotion"......it is instead bland and monotone. That aerial shot looks like the South Shore Plaza when it was an open air mall.
Mall was killed by people who were union construction workers who protested and violence broke out with cops there every day ... When it was completed , no union workers of their families and friends would ever go there so this was a factor in its low patronage .It was built with ordinary workers and I guess that was something you couldnt do...

When K-mart closed, it became Stuarts. Only after Stuarts closed, did Building 19 take over that spot.

After K-Mart closed, Stuarts took over that spot, being the anchor store. I worked there throughout high school. We need another Gags & Gifts store.

Wow, thanks for sharing those nice family memories

sorry to hear that, I will work to improve in the future. By the way, 1977 was a good year.
