Do You Remember the Cola Wars: Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi?

  • Weird History Food is reliving the sugary soda wars between Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi were invented during the late 1800s, and over the course of the 20th century, they competed for dominance across the globe. Coca-Cola was the front-runner from the outset and remained the leader until the 1970s. As Pepsi pushed harder to seize control of the marketplace, Coca-Cola shoved back and, in true combat-like fashion, the Coke vs. Pepsi war was born.

Interestingly, McDonald's Coke does taste different because of a specific deal they have with Coca-Cola in which the syrup McDonald's uses is delivered in stainless steel tanks instead of the usual plastic bags. Those tanks supposedly keep the soda fresher, and your tongue can taste the difference.

    • @candice_ecidnac

Coke also regularly sends out reps to calibrate the machines and make sure the syrup to seltzer ratio is within acceptable range. I worked at McDonald's and we'd always see the Coke guy come in with his testing kit to ensure McD's Coke stayed just right to bring people in.

The syrup is not refrigerated during transit, and those shipping containers can get really hot so you can imagine how it tastes different after cooking in the back of a hot truck during shipping. It’s not true that they released New Coke even though people preferred the original. When Coke was doing the product testing for it, doing blind taste tests at malls and events, people overwhelmingly preferred New Coke, and that is why it was released. But it failed because they took away the original. If they would have had both they could have phased out the original in a few years without much uproar. But they made the mistake of taking away something that was liked and even nostalgic without letting the market do that for them.

Pepsi's preference in the Cola Wars wasn't (just) based on taste (although that is the historical record). Pepsi jacked up it's likelihood of being chosen over Coke by keeping it at 2 degrees colder than than Coke (at least that is how they did it in the random mall taste tests). I know this because I worked for Pepsi during the campaign; well, at least I was one of the teenagers that ran the kiosks at the mall. Oh, and in Canada, so that may not have been the system everywhere else.

I'm a Coca-Cola guy all the way. If I go to a restaurant, and they serve Pepsi, I won't buy a soda. Dr pepper is its own company though, so if I'm lucky and I'm at a restaurant that serves that in addition to the Pepsi product, I will get one of those. But other than that, for me, Coca-Cola is the real thing.
Interestingly enough, my family didn't have soda growing up very often. We would have it usually once or twice a year if that. When I was a teenager, my math teacher would drink diet Coke on a regular basis and would give me one on occasion. I really enjoyed it. Later, on a 4th of July weekend, my aunt brought a cooler filled with Coke and other beverages. I tried Coke and loved it! It probably wasn't the first time I had a Coke, as when I was a child I would drink any soda that I could get, but it's the first recollection of me really enjoying the substance for what it was. And I've enjoyed it ever since.

Pepsi for me. It’s sweeter, it’s crisper, it’s more refreshing. It doesn’t make your teeth feel gritty and chalky like Coke does.

I have heard from numerous restaurant workers that Pepsi has better customer service regarding their machines. A local restaurant I frequent changed from Coke for that reason. Not sure if it's true nationwide.

I was a Fresca and diet Pepsi drinker. Probably a result of my childhood. Growing up, the only time we could have soda was when we threw up. Then it was flat coke to settle your stomach. So when I hit my teens in the seventies and started drinking soda for enjoyment, diet Pepsi and Fresca were my choices.

I prefer pepsi cola over coca cola. But not by much. Coca cola was originally invented in early May 1886 while pepsi was originally invented 7 years later in early June 1893. I would drink either coca cola or pepsi cola. Both are fine in my opinion.

I grew up in metro Atlanta and went to school at Georgia Tech, which is across the street from the Coca-Cola HQ. Everything is Coke there, even franchises of Pepsi chains like Panera and IHOP. I moved to Columbus, OH, home of the largest Pepsi distributor in the US, in February of this year. I never realized how good I had it in Atlanta, that now probably 80% of the restaurants around here are Pepsi. I only ever order Diet Coke at restaurants, but if it's a Pepsi restaurant, I am fresh out of luck because I can't stand Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, or Sierra Mist. Yes, I could just go for water (and do), but where's the fun in that? :P

Man, that's something. I come on here after watching Weird History and treated with something good. Had no idea that there was a war with soda. I know that Coke was popular during World War 2. I've had both drinks, Coke and Pepsi. It's like having 2 girlfriends. I heard about Michael Jackson being featured with Pepsi. Usually I think of Bill Cosby on the cover of Jello, not Coke. A fall from grace was he! Interesting fact: Max Headroom footage was used to hijack stations WGN and WTTW.

Classic/New Coke was a BRILLIANT marketing scheme.
This was at a time when shelf footage in the grocery store was at a premium (and still is today.)
By marketing a New Coke, then bringing back Classic Coke, they forced all the grocery stores to reduce the frontage of all the other competitors to make way for the new Coke product, making Coke the biggest company in the soda isle by frontage presentation.
The sales fall was only a small blip, but their expanded presence in grocery stores lasted for years...

I remember the Pepsi challenge or those tests at the store, one thing today people are unaware of is that the same corporations at the top that own almost everything beverage or snack make commercials to make you believe they are competing when they actually are not competing at all because the same owners own the same products on the commercials...

    • @ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917
      @ashblossomandjoyoussprung.9917 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Here's the thing. The tests were done after Pepsi learned that Pepsi tastes better than Coke when it's at room temperature, while Coke tastes better cold.
So, they did those taste tests with room temperature colas knowing that most people would say "Yeah, Pepsi tastes better," so that they could use it in their marketing.
Coca-cola wanted to change their recipe to something cheaper, so they used that advertising as justification for launching New Coke which didn't taste as good because they were using cheaper ingredients. People hated it, so using those cheaper ingredients they created a recipe that tasted similar to the old recipe but not exactly the same.
It's a great story of marketing taught in schools, and I love it. People will continue talking about New Coke and the Cola Wars for decades to come.
