  • As vintage Seiko’s popularity amongst collectors of all experience levels continues to rise, you may think you’ve seen it all when it comes to the Japanese powerhouse. However, the watches produced under the King Seiko name remain a bit of a blind spot for casual watch collectors. In this episode of our series Under the Radar, Craft + Tailored’s horological value hunter, Tyler Vanes, takes a closer look at a King Seiko Hi-Beat ref. 4502-7001 from 1973 and digs into the fascinating history of King Seiko to explain exactly why these watches are such underrated treasures.

    Awesome video! Have this KS in a no date version and it is such good value for the history, finishing and movement you are getting! Good stuff!

    Seeing these Vintage Grand Seikos always makes me appreciate the Seiko Sarb033/35. It will be interesting to see how the desire for those grows as they eventually become vintage pieces.

    Pure Ice on the wrist man! Wow. Vintage Grand Seiko is totally unique, even today GS can't make it like this anymore.

    "I think it's kind of interesting that King Seiko ultimately didn't make it as far as Grand Seiko because Grand Seiko is now a massive brand."
    That's bad intel. Seiko killed off both King Seiko and Grand Seiko in 1975 during the changeover to quartz movements. The Grand Seiko brand was then revived in 1988 as a high-end quartz watch.

    Daini means second and it’s the name of the “second Seikosha” company (as in corporation, not factory) created by Hattori. Nothing to do with the factory being “secondary”. It wasn’t at all, Daini was the first and main factory, and actually also built Grand Seikos (and Suwa also built King Seikos). So the factories have nothing to do with why GS (according to you) survived and KS didn’t. They both didn’t as both lines were discontinued around 1975/1976 as production switched to quartz. GS was always (just barely) the top of the line (movements and sometimes also materials) and so when needed was an obvious brand name choice to revive for higher end products.

    Are there any main differences between this and the 4502-7010? What's a good price point for it?

    • @craftandtailored
      @craftandtailored  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're very similar! The main differences are slight variances in the dial and hands. However, they share the same movement. Pricing should be relatively similar.

      @@craftandtailored is $470 USD a good price point for the 7010? It has been serviced, but all original except for the strap not polished. Also, it requires a new case back seal. How hard is it to replace the seal?

    I thought the 1973 KS HI-BEAT (like mine) operated at 28,800 bph.

    I appreciate the content und I know to appreciate quality where its due, but 2:13 this is not "incredible" or "unbelievable" finishing, this is a solid movement from the 60s as a mass-producing company could produce if it cared a little.

    It's a shame that the new King Seiko is nowhere as good as a Grand Seiko, whereas this was at the time.
