Ford 10 speed transmission FAIL after towing

  • Ford F250/F350 ten-speed (10 speed) transmission failure after towing 12,500 lbs (our 5th wheel RV). Early symptoms were hard shifting between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. Then I got the wrench light and reverse would not engage. That's right- no reverse! Drive shot us forward like we had been power braking. I received alerts on the Ford Pass app, and the dealership was able to remotely connect to help start diagnosing the issue. #transmission #purplecollarlife #superduty

    Watching this trans failure video. We just bought a 2023 f250 with the 7.3 gas Oct. 3,2023. With less than 3 days old and 200mi. pulling a 8000# 5th wheel camper, we stopped at an Alabama rest area for 15-minute break and the truck would not restart. After 3hrs of cool down it did start. Dealer had to replace the starter by default because they could not figure out what caused it. After replacing the starter they did notice it smelt burnt, slung the grease out and the end bearing looked overheated. We will be taking that same trip again for Thanksgiving hoping and praying no more failures.

    I can feel your frustration!! I bought a new F250 on 7/7/23 and it idled on 7/8/23 due to a bad NOx sensor . I was 11 hours from home and had to rent a car to continue on our trip . I thought the same thing about reliability. I was worried about my 10 year old GMC not being reliable but that’s what I’m back driving now. Good luck !!!

    Had a recall on my F250 for DEF sensor. Ford would not authorize the repair unless the sensor failed. Of course mine failed on the ALCAN highway! 78,000 miles and has had 3 back windows put in, computer update, fan clutch, 2 right rear tail lights, DEF sensor and a water pump all installed under warranty. Good reminder here for others to add the RV package to their AAA membership. If you break down while towing and don't have that add on, they will NOT tow your trailer.

    Good video. I have the same truck in the short bed that I drive for work. I’ve had this exact issue twice, both times shifting into reverse just slightly before coming to a complete stop. Now I do a one-count before shifting. It has been 20,000 miles since it happened last and not an issue since. 81,500 on the truck currently. I work with electronics daily and sometimes they just do weird things and need to be turned off and turned back on. Luckily I’m my case, this was exactly what mine needed. Did no harm internally or to any modules

    2017 owner here, F350 Lariat crew short bed 6.7. Our story has a lot of similarities.
    We bought ours second hand in 2020 and are the second owners. It had ~75k on the odo at the time. It wasn't obvious at the time but the 6R140 was bad and we didn't find out until towing our 14k lbs trailer up and down mountain interstates and highways far from home. 4th gear was shot and the transmission and engine would overheat, and we couldn't figure out why. We had towed light (~4000-5000 lbs) with it and it drove fine while never overheating even up mountain grades. It was likely a bad original unit because, after lengthy research during the time the truck was in a Ford dealer's bay for 5 weeks to a total of $11,600 for replacement, the original owner had to have the transmission overhauled under warranty at 20k miles. We didn't have the factory warranty because the truck was over 60k miles. In the near 3 years since getting an entirely new 6R140, it's been great.
    We should have gotten it inspected first, right? Well, trucks both new and used were being sold sight unseen (which is still pretty much the case now) and we had to grab one with the capacities we needed for 5W heavy towing when we had a shot. Waiting for a Ford dealer to be available for a full inspection would've meant waiting at least 2-3 weeks, during which time the truck would've been sold. So, our experience is how these problems get resolved the hard way. 😐

    The one thing I've heard that might solve this issue is having the dealership disable the transmission "auto-learn" feature which attempts to detect/learn your driving habits. Have the dealership return the transmission shift program to the way it was when brand new and then lock-out/disable the shift pattern auto-learn feature so it will always shift the way it did when you took delivery of the truck.

    The tsb is for a reprogram on the trans and ecu. They aren’t bad transmissions but unfortunately you got a first year 10 speed. I run a 23 f550 with the 7.3 and 10 speed and so far “knock on wood” it’s been dead nuts reliable. For context I’m normally hauling 12-18k daily with the truck. You may want to address your battery on the drivers side. Its leaking acid and will end up getting into the cables let alone corroding any metal around it. I would see if they would replace the battery and the hold down . Make sure they find out if its just and battery case issue and not an over charging issue. I was a Ford Tech for many years and have seen this issue many times and most of the time most just over look it.

Two of them he was towing his travel trailer with family. The radiator went out at 65 k. It got to the point he didn't dare to go anywhere more than ten miles. I haven't had any problems so far. It would not start. Remember, that was during that horrible cold weather we had those couple days around Christmas. Luckily, I was able to reset by opening then closing the door. In your interactions with other truck owners, have you found ANY 3/4 or 1 ton truck (Chevy, Ford or Ram), with ANY engine (gas or Diesel) that appears to stand out as reliable? Or, are ALL of the newer trucks more problematic than the older lineage?

    • @PurpleCollarLife
      @PurpleCollarLife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's hard to say on reliability. I've seen some owners who have had 0 issues with each of the brands. I've seen others with issues with each of the brands. I do think that it seems like the more you drive it, the less chance of issues. I've seen hot shot truckers rack up 150,000 miles without issues. But at the same times, I've seen some trucks used daily that end up with problems with the engine or the transmission. You just never know I guess.

    I have a 2020 F 550 7.3 10 speed. The trans is garbage at 15,000 miles. Been in the shop for a month, still don't know for sure what the actual issue is. All I know is Ford thinks they can fix it, but I doubt it's fixable. There are so many things wrong with it, when I took it in I listed what it did correctly, which was park. And from what I hear, there are cases where park won't work due to debris build up on the parking paw. 30 years of owning trucks, this is my first trans problem. I have owned a dozen or more trucks over my lifetime, all used in the lawn care/snow plowing business. And I know how to drive and maintain them. So it's very disappointing to have this failure in such a low mileage truck.

      I've been saying that since I bought my 08 Tundra LOL....they haven't listened, then they joined the undersized turbo engine crowd and said forget it won't buy another Toyota with the route they took...at least they could have kept the V8 as an optional engine, but to do away with it altogether was terrible, even Ford was smart enough to keep the 5.0L Coyote V8 as an F150 option.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@PurpleCollarLife Well the Tundra wasn't exactly the best for 1/2 use either, my 08 Ate the front differential bearings twice, and rear axle bearings twice, and the most work it ever got was a 5-7k trailer once in a while. Honestly my 08 Ford Explorer handles the same trailer/load better than my 08 Tundra did....the only thing was the 5.7L V8 of course had more power, but the transmission in the Tundra could never make up its mind what gear to pick, I just got to the point where I'd drop it to 4th in the mountains and leave it there. The front independent suspension in the Tundra was terrible too, always seemed like it was in the shop for alignment troubles that they never could really pinpoint a fix for...and my truck wasn't lifted and it didn't have oversized tires on it either...must have gotten a Friday evening closing shift, or Monday morning hang over shift build LOL...although they had TSBs for the axle bearings and front diff issues, they seemed to have got that sorted out a couple years later...but I went with an HD truck instead and honestly now when I tow its a much more relaxed drive won't go back to a 1/2 ton.

      @@wildbill23c Agree! I put almost 200k on mine. The 5.7 was burning oil, front left and right bearings were a pain to change out and the trans was the worst about hunting and slipping. Rear end was fine, interior was fine, but after having 5 Toyotas, I was ready to get rid of it. It towed a few 10k low boy trips, pulled a F250 out of Texas clay, but it was far from perfect. On small washboard dirt roads that had tractor gravel laid, the bed would flex so much it chipped paint and I couldn’t go faster than 20-25 mph. I am meticulously anal about caring for my vehicles, but it was turning into a love hate relationship. Disconnect the 12v batteries, let it sit, then reconnect them. It may temporarily clear the issue, but still plan to get it into the shop. I have seen lots of strange issues like this that get reset and cleared like this. Good luck getting the camper home. Going with another brand doesn't fix it. GM has the same issues with that 10sp, and Ram's with the 68rfe is a problem too. However I understand the heavy duty trans in the Ram is supposed to be pretty reliable, but requires more routine maint.

    I've heard of a "recall" on the rear camera in the tailgate. I believe its for distortion. Interesting it seems like something to do with putting it in reverse. Test your batteries independently, one of them may be faulty. Voltage issues can cause intermittent drivabillty problems. And lastly you need to purchase a code scanner to scan and document codes and clear if needed to get out of a "limp in" situation. I have one in ALL our vehicles. My wife and daughter both no how to use them in case of an emergency. Please do a follow-up on what they find.

    I’ve always been confused when people know the truck they are buying is going to have problems based on friends and other ways, just don’t buy it, especially after owning a previous Ford. I’ve owned a dozen Fords including the pos 6.0 , a 2011 6.2 pos with endless transmission problems and coolant in engine all by 77k . I had a 06 Cummins in between that was fantastic for 140k . I’m not a Chevy guy my son in law has 2500 6.6 I’ve driven towing a gooseneck horse trailer and was surprised how well it did. Good luck .

      Thanks for watching! I have friends who have had issues with their Ram and GMC trucks - so I think they all have potential for issues. I feel like people always thought the Dodge transmissions were bad. And we had a Dodge Ram with the 360 engine years ago. Great engine and great comfortable truck - but we had the transmission rebuilt a few times. Now - I feel like transmission issues are more common across several brands. I do seem to still hear great things about the Allison transmission in the Chevy and GM diesel trucks though. I’m hoping this was just a simple computer burp/glitch and that it fixed itself. I’ve heard several people who have had the computer/transmission “reprogrammed” at the dealership and it seems to buy them a year or so, but eventually the transmission needs some work. We’re just going to keep using this truck the way we need to (thanks to the 100K power train warranty through the Ford Blue Oval Certified program) and hope that they can fix whatever goes wrong along the way. I certainly would not buy a truck today without a longer power train warranty. Too much, and to costly to repair all the possible issues.

    Sounds like a valve body issue. Sounds like you got valves sticking, causing pressure issues. Transmission tech with Ford for over 5 years now. Two main issues I’ve seen from these ten speeds is Valves sticking in the valve body, and CDF drums. I know on the 10r140s which is what your super duty has they have issues with the rear planet and have a recall currently. Very simple diag, pan just needs to be dropped and the tech diagnosing your truck should air test your trans before splitting your valve body to rule out a cdf issue.

    You have a gorgeous truck, that 10 speed is unfortunately known for issues, I prefered the ZF six speed transmission Ford use to use. If your in the market in the future, I'd recommend the F-450, just on payload and steering radius alone especially driving gooseneck or 5th wheel. Stay with Ford non the less as the other manufacturers aren't as well built overall. Regardless that truck will last a very long time if properly maintained even if you need a new tcm or tranny.

      There’s certainly something to be said about the old trucks that lasted decades and were more simple. My old 1983 Bronco with the 300 straight 6 engine, and the 3-speed automatic transmission certainly didn’t get the MPG (or MPH) and comfort of today’s vehicle - but they were just about bulletproof and cost a fraction of the cost of a vehicle (even in converted $ value over time) today.
